I haven’t seen this article posted anywhere outside of my immediate library-sphere so I wanted to shout about it - remember that supporting your local libraries is super duper punk rock 📚❤️
I graduated high school in 99.
There was a student at our school named Wayne.
Wayne was gay. It was obvious. He was unable to stay in the closet even if he wanted to. To make matters worse, he was also Black. From a bullying standpoint, that was not a great combo. Both Black and white students made fun of him relentlessly. He was ostracized from the only community that may have given him protection. Only us theater kids stuck up for him, but not to significant effect.
Wayne was bullied so much that at one point he finally snapped and attacked his bullies with a lunch tray. I was actually seated in perfect line of sight and just sat there chewing my soggy fries in stunned silence. It didn't even seem real as I was witnessing it. The image of him wailing on his main bully as the food on his tray flew off is permanently logged into my long term memory.
The bully he attacked had blood all over his face and went straight to the nurse. Other than superficial cuts, he was not injured.
Before the attack, Wayne went to teachers for help. He went to guidance counselors for help. He went to the principals for help.
He did all of the things you were supposed to do. No one helped him. They wagged a finger at the bullies and warned them to stop.
Wayne's lunch tray melee was the only thing that worked. His bullies stayed far away from him. But a week later Wayne was expelled and the bullies were given no punishment.
So... no.
No one in my school talked about being trans.
Because the only way to survive being openly queer was to bash people with a lunch tray.
I graduated in '95 and I, personally, stopped not one but two friends from committing suicide because of how well they were accepted for being queer in school. One of them was just a long intense conversation but one of them involved driving to their house at high speed and breaking open a door, after we all realized he wasn't just late for D&D.
So, you know, no, I didn't know anyone who told me they were trans but looking back, I can definitely remember at least one person who was NB at the least, if not out and out trans.
I graduated in ‘98. I’m a rotten egg, so far past expiration it’s not funny.. Mostly because I was afraid I’d be lynched. You know, a nailed to a cross and set on fire kind of thing. I’m still so far past terrified, to this day, that I’m shaking while typing this. My parents still don’t know I should have been trans, only a few of my close friends. Including one who’s Openly Trans.
It’s hard not to start shouting obscenities at the person who posted that tweet. We were invisible because we didn’t want to die. Which we very well could have have.
Just because there’s a new trend doesn’t mean it’s “new” it just means people are starting to feel safe about being out about it. Kids now days deserve to have it better than we did. Don’t take that away from them. Transphobia is killing people.
Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!? Libraries literally saved my life as a child!
Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!
I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!
As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)
New books in LARGE PRINT! I’m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!
Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.
Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they don’t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.
Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.
I love the library ☺
The library was one of my favorite places to go as a kid and I still live to go and just. Sit and read. Or do homework. The university I’m at has a massive 8-story one I love to just wonder around in~ Great places
Libraries are amazing places, we need to protect them to ensure their continued existence.
I used to wander about the fiction section in my local library, and choose books with the most interesting titles - I discovered two amazing authors that way
most libraries will have something like a study room or quiet room which is exactly that, it is a room that people who need a quiet place, most often used by people doing school work or studying, can use and it is quieter then rest of library.
you will a bunch of people in there minding their own business, being quiet doing their thing.
Re point #5: many libraries will not record your reading history. This is so that if law enforcement tries to come in with a warrant and get someone’s reading history, we literally have no way of giving it to them. We take your privacy and right to read what you want very seriously. My library lets you turn on reading history recording, but you have to opt in.
Best Job I ever had was at a Library. It’s cathartic to be in the stacks putting books back during a lull.
As some one who suffers... I cannot Reblog this fast enough.
Everyone needs a picture of J. G. Hertzler (Martok) holding a gay bat'leth on their dash
Chancellor Martok said gay rights, rb if u agree
Reposting this because I need to materialize it somewhere.

Right now, and for a “limited time,” anyone in the United States between the age of 13 and 21 can apply for a free Brooklyn Public Library eCard, which gives access to 350,000 eBooks, 200,000 audiobooks, and online databases. (Normally, Brooklyn Public Library eCards are only free for people who live and/or work in New York state.)

Best Job I ever had, loved it and miss it, was at a Library. Would work at another 10/10. To be surrounded by all that history, adventure, terror and all the other things that make up the human condition. Plus the smell! Love me that old book smell. ^_^
Survive
A poem I wrote when I was feeling blue one day. It’s still first draft but I feel like I need to put it down somewhere.
Survivor
In the end you can call it cowardice. In the end you can call it bravery. In the end you can just try another day. In the end you only need one thing. In the end you just need to outlive your enemies. Even if, in the end you count among them. Just survive, in the end.

I tried three times before I hit 18. Chickened out last second every time. I don’t regret being a chicken in this case. Life gets better. Keep fighting.
Having depression doesn’t mean you’re weak, it means your strong. Suicidal thoughts just mean you’ve been strong too long. Get some help, everybody needs help now and then. You’d be surprised how many people would mourn you, don’t make them.
This is really quite a big deal. A tremendous amount of modern research ends up being sold to journals which require unreasonable payments to access it and only pay the original authors a pittance. It’s nice to see an agency like NASA deliberately widebanding its findings.
Not sure if people fully realize just how big of a deal this is. THIS is how science is advanced. Not through biased corporate research, business secrets, marketing, paywalls and patent wars. But through open, uncensored and unrestricted public access to knowledge.

NASA IS GOOD, NASA IS GREAT
NASA is the hero we don’t deserve.
This deserves every reblog.
In the face of institutions being silenced, this is doubly huge.
Please, reblog! IIt’s called self defense. Apart from having here, in the US, one of the highest cases of homicide and rape in the world and high rate of GBV, think about how this could help your mother or sister
Yes indeed#💯💯💯💯💯
Easier guide. Kick them in the balls and improvise from there. Done
Aren’t most of these advices not only useless, but are actually dangerous to attempt on an opponent? I swear I’ve read someone breaking them down to show how they won’t work.
If a normal sized woman does anything but score a good hit to the balls or throat she’s probably gonna get overpowered.
Headbutting looks cool, but IIRC, it’s the single worst idea in any fight.
Headbutt to the nose is as good as any hand to hand defensive technique if administered correctly using the crown of the head.
