Cleveland's service as sheriff was unremarkable; biographer Rexford Tugwell described the time in office as a waste for Cleveland politically. Cleveland was aware of graft in the sheriff's office during his tenure and chose not to confront it.[45] A notable incident of his term took place on September 6, 1872, when Patrick Morrissey was executed. He had been convicted of murdering his mother.[46] As sheriff, Cleveland was responsible for either personally carrying out the execution or paying a deputy $10 to perform the task.[46] In spite of reservations about the hanging, Cleveland executed Morrissey himself.[46] He hanged another murderer, John Gaffney, on February 14, 1873.[47]

Walking hand in hand, a daughter looks up at her father and asks, "Daddy, what did YOU want to name me?"

"Zelda honey," he responded, "I wanted to name you Zelda. But on the night you were born, mommy said there was no way I was naming you Zelda. You see honey, mommy went through a lot that night, and I was in no position to win naming rights."

"But why Zelda?" she asked.

"Because Zelda is intelligent… kind… and is loved by the people around her. Just like you."

Liking the sound of that, she smiled at him and said, "Aww. I love you Daddy."

And smiling back he replied, "I love you too Ganon."

I went to high school with a kid named Ganon. No idea if his parents were LoZ fans.

(He walks off. BONGI comes running back around from another alley; then resumes her seat on the steps. She notices someone she knows approaching from down the street.)

BONGI (shouting):  Miss Collins. Hi, Miss Collins.

(MISS COLLINS, a made-up, bitchy-looking drag queen, swishes on.)

MISS COLLINS:  Hell’o, Angel.

(He kisses her.)

Pet, you look simply exquisite. You do. You look good enough to eat. Now, tell me how I look.

(He struts and poses.)

Good enough to eat?

BONGI:  I couldn’t say; I’m a vegetarian.

MISS COLLINS (noticing someone down the street):  Oh, Gawd, look who’s … Just ignore her. She is, without a doubt, the most garish, tasteless faggot I’ve ever run across. I’m ashamed to be seen on the street with her. Look at her – 1965 and she’s wearing wedgies.

Snoop Dogg, after performing for a concert in Uppsala, Sweden, on July 25, 2015, was pulled over and detained by Swedish police for allegedly using illegal drugs, violating a Swedish law enacted in 1988 which criminalized the recreational use of such substances – therefore making even being under the influence of any illegal/controlled substance a crime itself without possession. During the detention he was taken to the police station to perform a drug test and was released shortly afterwards. The rapid test was positive for traces of narcotics and he was potentially subject to fines depending on the results of more detailed analysis.[251][252] Although final results "strongly" indicated drug use the charges were ultimately dropped because it could not be proven that he was in Sweden when he consumed the substances.[253] The rapper uploaded several videos on the social networking site Instagram criticizing the police for alleged racial profiling; police spokesman Daniel Nilsson responded to the accusations, saying "we don't work like that in Sweden."

"[random black guy] is probably high on something" <- quite possibly racial profiling

"Snoop Dogg is probably high on something" <- not so sure about this one

the sheer number of people replying positively to the idea of fucking supermarket security having free reign to execute you for shoplifting is insane i mean neurodivergent

the murder victim was a Black trans man named Banko Brown who was a community organizer with the Young Women’s Freedom Center since the age of 12. he’d been struggling with housing insecurity and still devoting all his time to helping his community for about a decade. he died just trying to survive this fucked up system. here is the gofundme set up by loved ones for his funeral services if anyone is able to contribute, it’s still about $5k off

I read this outrage, and noticed that we are told Brown was accused of shoplifting, but no details about the event other than that were given. So I made a prediction, and then clicked on the link given for us to be outraged about. I was right.

In a statement on Monday, the district attorney, Brooke Jenkins, said that prosecutors could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury that the guard was guilty of a crime after they reviewed statements from witnesses and the guard, along with video footage of the April 27 episode at a store on Market Street.
“The evidence clearly shows that the suspect believed he was in mortal danger and acted in self-defense,” Ms. Jenkins said in the statement, referring to the private security guard, who was identified by the San Francisco Police Department as Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony, 33.

oh look at that more facts exist than the victim’s identity categories! there were a bunch of people who saw it, and a video recording it! huh! what a weird coincidence nobody here is mentioning it or acting like it exists, and are all acting as if the only traits that existed were Brown’s skin color, gender, and being “accused of shoplifting!”

In an interview with a CBS affiliate in the Bay Area, Ms. Jenkins said: “This was a shoplifting that, really, based on the facts, turned into and escalated into a robbery, and the armed security guard did, ultimately, end up using lethal force.”

imagine that! someone was shoplifting, but then escalated until they were a violent threat to others! what an odd omission, that you’d tell us about the shoplifting, and the shooting, but not the parts in the middle. it’s almost like this is a lie made to get people upset and outraged.

being a “Black trans man who struggled with homelessness” does not mean you can’t threaten the life of other people and does not outrank the fact that you threatened the life of other people.

I read the stuff the San Francisco district attorney published about their investigation after she announced that she wasn't going to pursue charges. Among it was a transcript of an interview with the security guard at the Wallgreens (incidentally I've been to that Wallgreens, although not in the past few years). It was probably not a good idea for the security guard to talk to the cops without a lawyer, although he did so. He came across to me as very sympathetic - he was an ordinary working-class guy trying to do his security guard job as best he could, he was under a lot of stress because his car had been stolen and that made it harder for him to get to work, and he had been detained by the cops before for basically being in the wrong place at the wrong time (and then released quickly). The person committing the theft threatened to stab him and had no redeeming qualities other than apparently not being serious about the stabbing comment because they didn't have a knife on them. The guard broke down crying when he learned that no matter what happened he'd have to spend at least a night in jail. I'm glad he's not being charged with anything. I think the people who want him to be charged with something are pieces of shit, and I'd like to see changes in the law to greatly broaden the scope wherein it is legal to use a gun or other lethal violence against someone robbing a store, in order to prevent less friendly DA's from being able to ruin innocent peoples' lives with formal charges. This is exactly the opposite of what San Francisco politicians are talking about doing, there's been chatter in the SF news about proposals to further restrict the ability of security guards to carry firearms in SF.

No anarchist, left or right, has a good answer for how tf their society is going to solve the problem of limited resources that require huge amount of labor and investment to mine and ship and everyone wants them, but only so many people can get them.

So ancaps are just going to forget about property rights and market prices if they get their way?

hostis-thoughtcrimes-recidivist

Yes absolutely, don’t you know that without government the dumb people won’t have a clue how to produce goods or ship them? They won’t be incentivized to create solutions they’ll just do without or die, this makes total sense

Also lol at the idea that States have solved the issue of scarcity when that credit lies solely in the hands of capitalism

Also -

Another case of “no anarchist has EVER answered how (something that has been discussed by anarchists at length for decades)”

The replies/reblogs are absolutely FULL of very Smart Guys insisting no one has ever answered these questions, insisting anarchy is cancelled out by community (lmfao), or that without government the monopolies that currently exist only because of government will persist as usual with no competition.

Truly mental giants, many such cases

Dasha out here again with shit takes

Mental illness and shit takes go hand in hand.

Ah, I love "I, Pencil"

Because it proves my fucking point

In a complex post-industrial world humanity is entirely reliant on the upkeep of logistics and supply lines

Logistics and supply lines in our current real world are reliant on the assumption of the state having a monopoly on violence

That means nobody will hijack your ship, nobody will bomb your truck and nobody will just raid and seize your factory for no reason

Guaranteeing safety of business and logistics is one of the biggest predictors of economic growth in any country

So in a perfect anarchism, with no form of government whatsoever who's going to ensure that the wood I send to the factory to get made into pencils will even arrive safely there? That's right, it's gonna be insurance megacorps and PMCs, who, in a generation or two, will grow so big they will become quasi-governments themselves.

Because you've just created a POWER VACUUM.

Also, like, half the people in replies to this post were all about living off the land in isolated micro-communities. What's "I, Pencil" even have to do with it?

Ancaps think, if you replace goverments with corporation, everything will be completely different and better.

They don't think that, actually

They think megacorps ONLY gain power through the state

And, like, I will not disagree, megacorps DO gain their power through the state in the current paradigm

But you have to be very naive to think they would not find other ways to gain power without the state

Some people really do have the strange thinking of 'bad people won't do bad things once my politics take over!'

I do actually think that in an actual state of anarchism insurance companies and private military contractors would naturally arise to solve the real problems governments also (ideally) solve, and would eventually become quasi-governments themselves; I just think there's a decent chance this would be superior to the status quo b/c of greater opportunities for market competition between service providers.

There are real pool players in leagues, but like 60% of the casuals I see playing pool OR air hockey at bars are lesbian couples

Fuckin' American equivalent of the yuri aquarium date

is taking girls to aquariums supposed to be some kind lesbian thing now

I just think fish are neat.

it’s an established yuri manga trope, to the point of parody

someone alluded to diners being an american thing lately and it blew my mind. do you guys not have diners. diners are so good. god i love diners. pancake.

They probably just have different late night drunk food cuisines, I think the UK equivalent is a kebab shop?

the diner is an american thing. where it exists in continental evropa it is an explicit american golden age imitation and it will sell borgar fry and milkshake. i imagine this is even worse in east asia. like you know that if you see a diner in tokyo that it's run by rawhide kobayashi, who hasn't listened to any music other than 50s and 60s rock since the 90s, when he opened his diner.

a diner is just a kind of tavern

yeah diner is american for tavern. so if you put a thing outside of amerika and call it "diner" it means you're explicitly marketing it as something american. much like if you open a place in nyc and call it BIERHALLE or VOLKSHAUS you are marketing it as something deutsch

Well, except that they aren't primarily places to go to drink alcohol. Maybe that's just part of the American heritage of teetotaling protestants, though. Those 50s throwback diners with a deliberate American golden age aesthetic exist in the US itself, incidentally (also In n Out Burger tries to cultivate the same aesthetic, bounded by the fact that it is a Fast-food Drive-Thru rather than a Diner). There's at least one such establishment in my hometown. The food is acceptable.
