functioning adult (hah funny. but yeah I'm 25), unflinching optimist, shameless idealist, unapologetic fool, bad at feelings, good at hugs (allegedly). call me sheep - whatever gotdamn pronouns you wanna use - white - bi - nb butch - canada if you need anything tagged, please don't hesitate to let me know. also for the record I have caved and put my age up top but I do feel as though saying I'm not a minor should be enough. you can respectfully tell me why you feel differently, if you do
Under the new rules, homes that are not occupied for at least six months of the year are subject to a tax of one per cent of the property’s assessed value. The deadline to rent out empty dwellings was July 1.
Fazli said many of the people he has talked to are thinking of renting or selling their properties. He recently met with a woman who owns three empty properties in Vancouver — and says one of them is now listed for rent, another will be listed shortly and she is thinking of selling the third.
“This is a scenario of someone who is kind of in a panic now and needs to rent them out,” he said. […]

amazing

Why were they empty?

they’re meant to be investment properties, bought, left empty, and then sold a year or few later for huge profit as housing values continue to rise. it’s a massive part of the bc housing bubble, and why despite so much new construction it’s still so difficult to find rental housing

the fact that these landlords are panicking because they might have to actually use their housing properties as housing rather than finance capital is deeply funny

It should be more than a 1% tax rate though. I want it to be 100%. Torture them.

The trope where a character overhears something out of context and assumes the worst is usually annoying and bad but I really think it works well in Shrek

We, the audience, know that Fiona is talking about herself but, regardless, she’s calling herself these terrible things because she is an ogre. If Fiona is these things because she is is an ogre what does that make Shrek?

If Fiona says no one could love her because she is an ogre, she is saying that Shrek is also unloveable whether she wants to or not.

Imo the scene is a really good portrayal of how when you talk poorly of yourself or others for having a trait, you’re also talking about every other person who shares that trait; even if you love them or think what you’re saying doesn’t apply to them.

Not going to lie, I saw the word “Shrek” and never expected this to be a deep post.

On the being deep about Shrek website?

Hey, if you're wanting to make some changes to how you eat, remember- it's much easier, healthier, and more sustainable to ADD foods that make you feel good than it is to REMOVE foods.

If you feel like you don't drink enough non-sugary fluids, it makes more sense to try drinking more tea and sparkling water than it does to just avoid soda. You gotta add in the good (and remember, that the only value food has is how it makes YOU feel. Food is morally nuetral and should be enjoyed.)

Try:

  • Adding a handful of easy produce to lunch and dinner- baby carrots or cherry tomatoes, something 0 prep. And yes, you are allowed to dip it in dressing! (The fats can make it easier for your body to absorb the vitamins in the veggies)
  • Adding a cheese stick or yogurt to breakfast. The protein is good and can help you wake up faster.
  • Adding some roasted nuts to your afternoon snack. (ADD, not replace.) That variety and little protein boost will do you good!
  • Have a glass of tea, sparkling water, or juice each time you have food. Let's be honest- you aren't hydrated enough. Go buy yourself some Kool Aide mix if that'll make you drink more water! Really!
  • If you struggle with binge eating sugary foods and it makes you feel yuck when the sugar crash comes- eat 1 or 2 pieces of chocolate with lunch and dinner. Every day. Really. Make it not a big deal. Make it not special. Make it something you can expect, instead of crave. Let yourself enjoy it without guilt.

Remember- food is a gift. It should bring you joy, not stress. Trust your body. Enjoy the cookie. Drink something tasty.

I just want to point out the claim that everyone is grossly dehydrated and needs 8 glasses of water a day is actually a corporate propaganda from water bottle companies. If you drink when you're thirsty, you're getting enough water. I'm really tired of seeing otherwise reasonable posts wailing about a largely fabricated "dehydration epidemic."

Totally true! Not everyone is dehydrated. Trust your body- drink when you are thirsty.

I just know that I end up chronically dehydrated (probably from the ADHD. My brain forgets to keep reminding me that I'm thirsty....) so making an effort to build in reminders to drink *anything* is super helpful for me.

Remember: veggies that have butter or cheese or whatever other "unhealthy" thing that you WILL eat will always be better than plain veggies that you don't.

Food isn't just numbers, it's meant to be enjoyed.

Not only are you more likely to eat MORE veggies if they are served in a way that is enjoyable, but vitamins A, D, E, and K are specifically fat soluble. Your body gets MORE nutrients out of veggies if you eat them with some form of fat. Salad dressing literally makes salad more nutrient-available.

KIRK IS HOLDING A ZINNIA. THE SAME FUCKING FLOWER.

FUCKING NASA MAN

No. Nononono. You don’t understand.

I am so mad about this. Like, not like I wanna kill someone, but mad, as in, hysterical?

They wanted to answer questions about plants in space, right? How biology and botany would work in space. Because then who knows? We could grow crops in space, or fix the atmosphere. Or create the perfect biome for plants that are now extinct. Who fucking knows, right?

They could have taken a food crop. Wheat, maybe. Or rice. Something they could observe to see if it would be possible to solve a food shortage or whatever. Maybe a small apple tree to see if it would bloom, and then see if there could be a way to make it fruit.

Or, you know, go the genetics route and take a sweet pea. See if zero gravity does anything to how genes are passed on. Mendel did it in a shed, why not a tin shed in outer space, right? Oh the possibilities.

Was it so wrong to take the zinnia? No, of course not. In my little horticultural brain, I thought, oh how lovely! A splash of colour in the emptiness of space. Something bright and cheerful, something that gives hope. That must have been it, right?

But no.

SOMEONE went, “Nah, mate, here’s an episode of Star Trek where Kirk is holding a ZINNIA in a SPACE DESERT.”

I could scream. I don’t know if I love or hate these fucking nerds. Oh my gods.

NASA, YOU NEEEEERDS

love these NASA nerds

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I WANT TO WORK THERE

NASA Nerds and Trekkies.. they are the same group more than you think. (*Also me even before I saw Kirk in this post* … wasn’t there an episode in TOS… ahhhh)

TOS is my favorite self-fulfilling prophesy- like, when they first aired, they were contacted by the military to find out where they heard about their *secret project* because it was the sixties and everything was spies (I think the tech was the bio-scanner beds in sickbay, but I could be wrong).

Then, a bunch of kids who grew up loving the show went to college and majored in science and engineering and now we have cell phones and space zinnias.

Fucking wild, man

Cancel culture strikes again

No but literally this sucks if real. Like it does and it's worrying

it is real. it sucks. my immediate reaction was outrage over them killing my favorite bus line. "promotes satanism" my brother in christ it's a fucking joke. polish christians get a grip challenge.

however,

the bus line's response to the controversy over the number was to change 666 to 669. which is some of the most beautiful malicious compliance i have seen in a while. and it makes up for the hope in humanity i lost while reading the above screenshot.

funniest thing about the “reddit migration” is that I haven’t seen a single post shitting on anyone coming from Reddit. when twitter started bleeding users everyone was firing rent-lowering posts but with redditors skittering about we’ve left the doors open and put out food bowls
