Look what people can accomplish when they work in real solidarity and partnership with each other. Incredible.
“You go to the United States where they pick money on trees. Did that happen? Hell, no.” Instead, farm workers were making 75 cents for 8-hour days. Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz, Benjamin Gines, and Pete Velasco of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee and other Filipino farm workers began the Delano grape strike when they walked out in September 1965. A week later, the Mexican American National Farmworkers Association with Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and Richard Chavez joined the strike.
Before Brown v. Board of Education, There was Tape v. Hurley
School segregation in the United States wasn't just a black and white matter. Tape v. Hurley (1885) concerned Chinese American Mamie Tape's enrollment in a majority white school.
Wanna help Maire get through May 2023?
Maire has recovered from her recent surgery, which removed a lot of disease, and now has her next, more specialized surgery scheduled for June 14!!
Maire is still itching to get back to work--she's a trained social worker whose job before she got too sick to work was advocating for vulnerable people in the same rural communities she fell through the cracks of as an orphaned kid--and she's hopeful that these surgical interventions will make that possible. She's also still working on disability appeals in case it isn't.
In the meantime, she HAS been able to crochet some lovely little baskets that she's been hoping to sell on etsy to cover at least some of her expenses. Like these:
So if you want to help her out and get a pretty little basket for your effort, that's an option now!!
They're all natural fibers, either 100% cotton or 100% wool!!
Here's what she needs to raise for May:
Car Registration: (Due 5/14!) $107
Storage: $80
Insurance: $106
Meds: $100
Cat stuff: $100
Gas: $40
Toiletries: $30
Spotify: $13
Instacart Membership and tip: $22
So she needs to raise $598.
Would any financially secure adults be willing to throw even a dollar her way?

You guys know how to travel in a car with your canes, right? You know where to put them so they don’t kill you in an accident? You’re not just holding them on your lap?
For the record they go under your feet or under the seat. That’s the safest place for them except the trunk. Pls don’t let your mobility aid kill you in a freak accident
I’ve been driving with my cane wrong the entire time 😃
If this post saves even just one (1) person from ending up with a broken jaw/face/windshield I will be happy tbh
Nobody deserves to have to deal with maxillofacial surgeons or worse…. auto glass repair shops
Let me just add that if they are at the side if your seat, between that & the door, they can trip you when you try to get out. I've done this quite a few times with blood and scars to show for it. The last time was my birthday last year when a little girl saw me fall and ran right over to see if I was ok. (So sweet of her!) I never felt like more of an idiot.
Parents Together has a petition asking US politicians to pass paid leave for new parents.
anyway here’s your reminder that lgbt muslims exist and islamophobia shouldnt be tolerated within lgbt communities!
shout out to lgbt muslims living in places where our identities are still criminalised.
btw i encourage everyone especially non muslim lgbt ppl to reblog this. if you see islamophobia within the community, you should help us instead of telling us our religion is ‘horrible’

The text reads, "Larry Itliong. I have the ability to make that white man know I am just as mean as anybody in this world. I could make him think, and I could make them recognize that I'm a mean son of a bitch in terms of my direction fighting for the rights of Filipinos in this country because I feel we are just as good as any of them. I feel we have the same right as any of them because in that Constitution, it said that everybody has equal rights and justice. You've got to make that come about. They are not going to give it to you." End desc.]

Instead of celebrating the coronation on Saturday, May 6, consider donation to the Trussell Trust, which supports over 1,200 food bank centres across the UK.
Operation Condor was a covert, multinational “black operations” program organized by six Latin American states (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, later joined by Ecuador and Peru), with logistical, financial, and intelligence support from Washington.
In the Cold War climate of the 1960s and ’70s, when U.S. leaders and Latin American militaries regarded popular movements and political dissidents as “internal enemies,” any methods were considered legitimate in the “war against subversion.” In fact, many of these new social movements were indigenous nationalist, leftist, socialist, or radically democratic forces fighting to represent the voiceless and the marginalized.
As leftist and nationalist leaders won elections throughout Latin America in the 1960s and early 1970s, and new revolutionary and progressive movements gained strength, U.S. security strategists feared a communist-inspired threat to U.S. economic and political interests in the hemisphere. Local elites similarly feared that their traditional political dominance and wealth were at risk. Washington poured enormous resources into the inter-American security system, of which Condor was a top-secret part, to mobilize and unify the militaries in order to prevent leftist leaders from taking power and to control and destroy leftist and popular movements in Latin America. Anticommunism and “preventing another Cuba” were the national security priorities of the U.S. in Latin America.
The reigning national security doctrine incorporated counterinsurgency strategies and concepts such as “hunter-killer” programs and secret, “unconventional” techniques such as subversion, sabotage, and terrorism to defeat foes. Much of counterinsurgency doctrine is classified, but scholars have documented many of its key components. Michael McClintock, for example, analyzed a classified U.S. Army Special Forces manual of December 1960 Counter-Insurgency Operations, one of the earliest to mention explicitly, in its section “Terror Operations,” the use of counterinsurgent terror as a legitimate tactic. He cites other secret U.S. army special operations handbooks from the 1960s that endorsed “counterterror,” including assassination and abduction, in certain situations. One March 1961 article in Military Review stated, “Political warfare, in short, is warfare…[that] embraces diverse forms of coercion and violence including strikes and riots, economic sanctions, subsidies for guerrilla or proxy warfare and, when necessary, kidnapping or assassination of enemy elites.” In short, “disappearance” was a key element of counterinsurgency doctrine.
Another great satire by Alexandra Petri. This one was so good, the link above is a gift link so even if you don’t subscribe to The Washington Post, you can read the entire column. Below are some excerpts. Enjoy! 😁
“Rosa Parks showed courage. One day, she rode the bus. She was told to move to a different seat because of the color of her skin. She did not. She did what she believed was right.”

— Two versions of a first-grade lesson from Studies Weekly, a publisher whose social studies curriculums are currently used in Florida elementary schools. Studies Weekly revised the lesson more than once, omitting any mention of racism or segregation, to submit for a state review of social studies materials.
American history is full of many heroes, whose accomplishments we will have no problem telling you about in the state of Florida! They fought for justice, which was brave of them, if a little redundant, because there was no specific injustice to fight against. Here are just a few of their stories!
Harriet Tubman is considered an inspiring figure by many because she made many trips on foot, often with other people. She specifically led trips from the South to the North, often at night. At night, you can see the stars! It is great to lead trips. She was a hero.
Frederick Douglass was famous, too! We celebrated him during the Trump administration for being someone “who’s done an amazing job” and whose contributions are still being “recognized more and more.” He also gave a noteworthy speech about the Fourth of July. Who doesn’t love the Fourth of July?
John Brown is regarded by some as a heroic figure. Famously, he went to what is now West Virginia (Wild and Wonderful!). He also grew a luxurious beard. Once, he was very excited to visit a weapons arsenal. We support West Virginia tourism!
Abraham Lincoln was a tall man who did something that was a very important thing to do, and especially at that time. He was president during the Civil War, which was fought from 1861 to 1865 between a group of people whom it was universally agreed would make wonderful, handsome statues and some other people who may have had reasons. He even made a proclamation, probably unnecessarily! He famously went to the same play as John Wilkes Booth, a very talented actor who also loved to exercise his Second Amendment rights! It is nice when actors support the Second Amendment. Too often, woke Hollywood doesn’t.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton and some of her friends went to Seneca Falls, N.Y., and had a conference there. At the conference, she talked about things related to ladies. Seneca Falls is a nice place to visit, especially in the summer! […] The Little Rock Nine went to school! Some people did not want them to go to school, and there were protests and guards were called in. It is sad: Even today, some people just don’t want other people to learn! They went anyway. It is good to go to school, where you can learn so much about history!

I don't think people on this website understand what "you should love jewish people more than you hate nazis" means
do you hate nazis because they're fun to hate on and easy to ratio? or because of the material harm they have caused, are causing, and will continue to cause? when you see a nazi, do you see an acceptable target? or do you see an active threat? what do you do to help jewish people outside of these situations? anything at all? do you have positive views on judaism? do you try to better yourself by listening to jewish voices on topics of bigotry?
I'm not going to complain about a nazi getting punched for being a nazi, but the issue isn't as simple as just punching nazis. you need to love jewish people more than you hate nazis if you want to address the root causes of antisemitism
i feel like nothing will ever demonstrate just how out of touch a lot of “punch nazis!!!!!!” folks are from reality than the time someone told me, a jew, that it was my responsibility to “sit at the table with” nazis and explain to them why being a nazi was bad. their reasoning? i’m white/white presenting/whatever the fuck you want to call it, so “obviously” the nazis wouldn’t have a problem with me. and when i said “actually that’s like super fucking dangerous for me and i would rather y’all white gentiles do that part” suddenly it was “oh so you don’t want to actually do anything to make things better???????” no it’s just literally not my responsibility as a jew to fucking fix nazis. y’all want to punch nazis but you don’t want to “sit at the table” with them. you want us to do that part. you want the hero moment while jews and poc do all the fucking hard work.
I think you're giving too much credit, because IME, the "just punch nazis crowd" may want the hero moment, but they're not actually going to throw the punches. They want the credit for the hero moment without even doing that part, let alone the actual work.
I've done the hard bit. I actually went and sat my Jewish ass down for a "so. You want me dead. Why?" conversation with someone who'd publicly posted death threats against me specifically, and I fucking called for that meeting because I was sick of feeling hunted.
And the result is that I have no patience whatsoever for "punch nazis" rhetoric from anyone who hasn't actually done it. I have known far too many people who'd natter on about "nazis bad; punch nazis" and were absolutely nowhere to be found when there were actual nazis present. I will believe someone who uses "punch nazis" as a slogan if and only if they have proven themselves to be as willing to endanger themself to protect me as I am willing to endanger myself to protect my community. But otherwise? It's just braggadocio. It's easy rhetorical points about something they don't care about or understand.
And, more dangerously? It's a lie to attempt to lure Jews into a false sense of security. There's no shame in fear, but you cannot tell people they can trust you with their safety if they actually can't. Because if they do, they can die. We learn that lesson very young. It was a regular warning I got from Holocaust survivors, because all the ones I knew had known people who'd died for trusting the wrong person. They trusted someone who'd insisted they'd help and that they understood the risks, and who, when the chips were down, said no or turned them in.
But I digress. Y'know what I find most telling about the situation around that little chat I had?
For all the goyim who were saying "don't do that, it's dangerous, it's not your responsibility," while I was doing my safety planning, not a single one offered to have the conversation for me. No one offered to even try to fix the problem. Plenty of "you should just hit the motherfucker." Quite a lot of "if it were me, I'd shoot the asshole." This was someone whose identity, hobbies, job, and views were all a matter of public record. They could have. They could've punched. They could've talked. They could've shunned, even. And they didn't -this person's views became public, and people went "oh, that's terrible" in private interactions with me and proceeded to do absolutely nothing about the individual in question (and then get increasingly uncomfortable about me having issues with the situation). "It's not your responsibility" -well I don't see you stepping up, and someone's got to do something, and I'm here and no one else is willing to bother, so it looks like it's me.
Because it's always "punch nazis" until there's a nazi who needs to be punched, and then the person with the crossed-out swastika pin is nowhere to be found. It's never "escort the Jews to synagogue" or "talk to the nazi" because that requires actually doing something.
Serious question, aside from this, as I don’t know what to do about the punch Nazis crowd other than roll my eyes at their armchair activism. What are some other good ways we could be helping Jews? I see escorting to the synagogue in here, which seems super important, I looked and I don’t see any sort of organized resource, should I go ask my local synagogue if they need help with that?
Personally I’ve been doing an effort to keep track of the Jewish holiday calendar and wishing my coworker a good Tu B’Shvat, and a happy Purim, so that he knows people actually give a shit and remember he has holidays that aren’t Hanukkah that are important. I hope it doesn’t feel demonstrative (he’s always been super chill and we have fun talking about our faith so I feel like this is welcome, as are the cookies I brought in for Purim) I know as a pagan I’ve had a lot of moments where no one knew how to interact with my faith and chose to ignore it, and that stings so I want to try and normalize interacting with his? Idk that’s one thing I’ve been trying, are there other good ways that goys could try and help make Jewish life better and safer instead of just hashtagging about it?
Accessibility's a big one. In addition to our holy days, if an event is scheduled between sundown on Friday and starrise on Saturday, it's functionally a declaration that traditionally observant Jews are not welcome -even if someone shomer shabbos is willing to forego services or daven at the event, they can't drive, they might not be able to carry stuff like their keys with them, and they're pretty limited on using stuff like elevators. A few years ago, some convention or other offered "Shabbat wristbands" for attendees that would allow them to not carry money or use electricity on Saturday for a multi-day con, and the photos are still making the rounds on Jewish social media because it was such a big deal.
"Food will be provided," when none of it's kosher is another thing that comes up a lot. I've sat through several mandatory all-day meetings where I was specifically instructed not to bring anything and there was nothing I could eat, which... gets to be a problem several hours into something. Options there 1) be up front about not being able to accommodate, and allow people to bring their own food 2) have all food meet max possible dietary restrictions and 3) if you're providing food for everyone with a limited subset specifically for people with dietary restrictions and it's self-serve, please give the people with restrictions first crack at the food.
More generally, not subjecting random Jews to good Jew tests. There are a lot of these -about Israel, about observance, about belief, about family -the "right" answer depends on who's asking because different people want directly oppositional ones, and they all rely on oversimplifying complex answers in Judaism to suit the incredibly limited understanding of the person asking in order to... um. Provide proof that we're human beings and shouldn't be singled out for ethnically-based harassment and violence? (There really isn't a nicer way to put that.) And, as a corollary to this, not standing by while someone else is either doing a Good Jew interrogation or trying to codify "no bad Jews" as a set rule. (Also know the dogwhistles on this -there are a lot.)
As a pagan, this one is likely to be less applicable to you specifically -but... y'know that thing where someone is aggressively trying to universalize something Christian? "EVERYONE can celebrate Christmas!" "It's just an Easter bunny; there's nothing religious about it!" "All religions are just about some skyfairy and people fearing hell, and religions need to be done away with!" We see those as very aggressive Christian proselytizing (and the last statement as outright genocidal). And... for the people who do that... tone it down a bit? If you're going to be caroling, send out a mailer a week or two in advance with a doorhanger people can put out to opt in. Don't harass the family not putting up holiday decorations. Some of us are prohibited from observing holidays like Valentine's Day and Halloween and Christmas and Easter because they're not-Jewish religious holidays; there's no argument you can make that will convince us otherwise (please no "Christmas was originally pagan" -even if it were, that's not really the point).
Keeping an ear to the ground about how the Jewish community in your area is doing is really helpful. Knowing when it's getting pamphleted with antisemitic flyers, or which synagogues in your area have had a recent bomb/arson/active shooter threat is handy -so's helping clean up graffiti at synagogues/Jewish schools/Jewish-owned businesses/Jewish cemeteries (if this is the first time you're finding out it's normal for people to vandalize our graves, boy do I have bad news for you about a common paving material in Europe).
If you've got Jewish friends, be aware that we tend to keep an ear to the ground for antisemitism writ large, not just in our immediate area, and we'll often be somewhat off-kilter about attacks, even for communities we haven't been part of.
If you're willing to endanger yourself, walking to synagogue with people on Saturdays and holy days (as distinct from holidays -this is a thing for Rosh Hashannah/Yom Kippur/Pesach/Sukkot/Shavuot, not Purim/Chanukkah/Tu Bishvat/Lag BaOmer) is an incredibly generous offer. If that's not really feasible, calling a synagogue in your area that's had shit go down and say "hey, I heard about X; I wanted to offer my support and say that I'm sorry that happened and see if I could do anything" is always welcome.
