Stuff I Think Is Awesome type 1 diabetic for 13 y

@redtailhawk19

I am a type 1 diabetic for 13 years now. diagnosed when I was ten on my birthday. ATLA, LOK, Starwars, Animation, Xiaolin showdown, and lots of other things I like. I like to read and draw stuff, and I like to write.

thinking that mr. brightside, a usamerican song by a usamerican band which is one of the most popular songs of the last 30 years, is something that is only popular among brits is funny enough on its own but to say sweet caroline, a song by usamerican icon neil diamond about *caroline kennedy* which is a mainstay of boston sports specifically and usamerican events across the country generally, is also a song only brits know is just hysterical you’ll have to drag me off the internet by my fucking toenails i love it here

Do they even like Led Zepplin over in the UK? I always thought of them as the band that made baseball walk-up songs

“there are no videos of anyone singing sweet caroline at a sports function”

Not many people talk about how deep emotional neglect hurts you.

I’m afraid to want things. I’m afraid to ask for help. I’m afraid to tell someone something if they seem in a bad mood. I can’t process when someone is nice to me. I can’t handle rejection, but my brain literally short circuits if someone gives me a compliment to the point where sometimes the rejection is better.

There are lots of overlap with emotional abuse, but emotional neglect hurts just as much. And it’s even worse that it usually goes undetected, so a lot of people can’t tell they’re being neglected until it’s too late.

listen i am more than aware that hormonal birth control can do fucky things to your brain and body. i have been there and i have dealt with it and i don't take that lightly. but i do want to say that if you're sexually active and can get pregnant, the last people online you should be listening to are the "divine femininity" cryptofash tradgirl influencers who are spouting leftist-sounding rhetoric while telling you to throw out your birth control and "just track your cycles naturally" at a time when it's functionally impossible to get an abortion in many states. i cannot stress this enough. these people are white supremacists who have learned to cloak their right-wing, reject-modernity beliefs in language that sounds appealing to the left, and they are winning, and you need to be really vigilant about the influencers and messaging you are following and consuming and helping give more of a platform. because this shit is everywhere and women are going to die because of it.

Back in my Pagan Feminist days, I knew several women who advocated and practiced rhythm-based natural birth control. And like, I'm someone who has had many different unpleasant side effects from BCP.

But those women? They have several children each now, at least some of them unplanned.

So if you want kids and you're okay with sorta accepting "mistakes" then fine, you do you. But if you don't want kids or can't get pregnant right now? Hormonal or barrier methods. Barrier methods are 99% effective when practiced consistently and correctly. And you should be having safe sex anyway. (Also if you don't like condoms, please check out thinner non-latex condoms (Skyn brand recommended). They are way better for both partners.)

So I thought this was commonly known internet navigation (but apparently it might just be those of us who have been using the internet since the 90's who still know it). Or so it seems based on... a grumpy comment I got.

When you see an arrow like this:

It means you click it to expand out a hidden section.

It's an accordion section/menu! It's useful in web design to hide information that may be overwhelming under specific headers so people can only see what they need.

Here I'm using it for people who need the content warnings to be able to check, but for those who don't need them and don't want to be spoiled to just move right past without accidentally reading anything.

It's still the user's responsibility to click the arrow and read things as they need! But it is all warned. (And, yes, the all encompassing issues are already a tag on the fic, I'm just providing additonal warnings per chapter.)

video description: an AO3 tutorial narrated by a female voice. She is answering the question, "is there a way to include two separate tags? like to show me fics with fluff OR angst and it doesn't have to have both?"

"This is a great question because you might think that you want to do this."

The narrator zooms in on the filters menu where Fluff and Angst have both been added as other tags to include.

"But this actually means that I want to have both of those tags together."

She then explains that if you want search results that contain either one of those tags or both of them, the user should instead use the Search Within Results field at the bottom of the filter menu.

To create a filter for either fluff or angst, she instructs the user to type

fluff || angst

into the field. She explains that || means or. She also explains that you could use the word or in all caps instead like this

fluff OR angst

She then demonstrates search results with one fic which has the tag fluff, one fic that has the tag angst, and one fic that has both tags.

At the end of the video, she notes that if the tag you want to include in your search has more than one word (meaning there is a space between the words), then you should put quotation marks around it.

Note: you can string together multiple ORs, so for example

fluff OR angst OR hurt/comfort OR crack

If you want a powered up version of this that does not have to be restricted by ship, fandom, or whatever tag you initially clicked on, you can use tag ids (here is a script that displays them but you can also find them by clicking on the RSS Feed) plus the work search page. You can also use this to search multiple fandoms at the same time.

Please note that the filtering sidebar does not appear when you do use this method of searching so you’ll have to input the stuff you want to exclude when you do the initial search.

Let’s say you want a fic that has either angst, fluff, or both but you don’t want to any fics for BNHA. You would go find check the Angst (filter_ids:176), Fluff (filter_ids:110), and BNHA (filter_ids:3828398) canonical tags to see what the tag ids are. Then on the work search page, you’ll input the following into any field:

filter_ids:110 || filter_ids:176  -filter_ids:3828398

Alternatively you can input:

filter_ids:110 OR filter_ids:176  NOT filter_ids:3828398

You need to put a “-” or “NOT” before every tag you want to exclude.

A bonus of this method is that the url is shorter. Browsers have a url character limit so if you’re stacking a lot things into your search this will let you add more things to your search without running into that.

If I’m not mistaken, the whole “putting your pronouns in your bio even if your cis” thing was started on Tumblr. I feel like I remember that post a long time a ago. So like, kudos to you mystery Tumblr user. I guess this hellsite is good for something after all.

Write fanfic for yourself.

Publish fanfic for the rotation of 3-6 people who are devoted readers and will either go feral or leave you very nice words and yell with you about it.

How to stan the white guy with minimal contribution to fandom's racism problem

Look, I get it. You're obsessed with the white guy. Maybe two of them together. And maybe your series has one or more main Black characters or Asian characters or a brown Latino star. You're here because of the irresistible pull of that white guy (or two), who is fascinating beyond belief. His acting is above anything anyone has ever seen. When you write about him, the words just pour out.

This is a fan-centered space so I feel confident in saying — we've all been there. I'm not going to lie and say I've never been invested in white characters. There's nothing innately wrong with liking white characters (that would be silly).

But when it comes to the characters of color in your chosen media, you have a choice.

You're unmoved by the Black major characters and find them unrelatable? Ok. If you're not able to keep that to yourself, prepare for a discussion about the empathy gap. Because we literally do not need content about your inability to relate to CoC if the intention is for it to stand as some kind of undebatable truth about the inferiority of CoC.

And then there are the deflections. At the first mention of sidelining CoC it comes like clockwork: They're poorly written! The acting is sub par! The character is just not interesting! It's got nothing to do with race!

Except when it happens over and over and over again, it does. It just does.

I can't count how many times a conversation on Reddit or the Jedi Council Forum (or anywhere, really) started out about Finn and became all about Kylo Ren five replies in. Just today I saw the same thing on Tumblr, a post about the poor treatment of Lucas from Stranger Things, and in the comments people were talking about Billy and his trauma.

If you stan the white guy(s) and don't want to be perceived as part of fandom's racism problem, do not hijack threads about CoC. Not every conversation has to center your guy. Conversations that center Black characters, and I can't stress this enough, do not take anything away from your white fave(s). Nothing at all. It's not a competition.

Stop making excuses about why you don't like the Black character. No one really cares until you start tearing them down with excuses. Don't come up with meta about how the Black hero is a villain, actually, and the white bad guy is a tortured sweet baby who represents all of the forgotten children of the world. It's not clever, it's not good or interesting meta, it's transparent empathy gap racism.

And, again, that will be discuseed. You can't believe in "maximum inclusion" and draw the line at discussing racism. Responding to racism is not breaking the fandom social contract. It's a long established part of fandom by now.

It really shouldn't bother white guy stans so much to see a Black character in a major role in genre media to the point where they feel the need to aggressively dismiss them and their fans. Not doing that, at least, should be easy. Not doing that means that maybe that fandom critical post about racism isn't about you.

It's not about white guy characters or even their inevitable popularity. It's about fan behavior toward characters and fans of color, whether it's on Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit or AO3.

CGI animators should unionize next. normally, their jobs would be too precarious to strike, since studios would replace them without a second thought, but if it's part of this larger general film strike, they might finally have meaningful power to better their working conditions

if CGI animators unionized, it would kill the MCU. straight up. the the entire business model is built on exploiting CGI animators

how can ppl say cats are heartless tbh

I once stayed at a game reserve in South Africa, and they had three cheetahs – two males and one female. The boys stuck together (they were brothers), but female cheetahs are solitary, save for when they are raising cubs. Which is hard work for cheetahs, because they don’t/can’t den, she’s working constantly to protect/move her cubs, as well as feeding both them and herself.

Now, these cheetahs ARE in a private reserve, but they’re still essentially wild. But they are more or less accustomed to the presence of people. And this cheetah, Ketswiri, got very badly injured in her leg one time, which usually would be fatal to a cheetah. The staff at the reserve helped her. Another time, she was starving, and they provided her a fresh antelope carcass. And she remembered this, because the science officer was telling us how one time he was watching Ketswiri and her cubs, and she wandered over and dumped all her cubs at his feet, and walked off. Like “watch my kids, I need some me time.” And he was panicking like COME BACK I CAN’T BABYSIT YOUR KIDS WTF

Half of the comments are about cats giving birth on top of or next to their owners and I’m not crying at all

it’s so funny though because domesticated cats are aggressively social in raising their young so basically op’s cat was like bitch these are your kids too, where tf you think you’re going???

As a person with cats who has given birth, they are also this way about *your* kids. My cat spent my whole pregnancy snuggled up to me, and then as soon as my daughter was born, he was always where she was. He was super protective of her when new people came over. Whenever we had to take her out for a doctor’s appointment, he waited by the door and sniffed her carseat when we brought her back. Cats are intensely social and it’s so wonderful 🥰

Cancel culture strikes again

No but literally this sucks if real. Like it does and it's worrying

it is real. it sucks. my immediate reaction was outrage over them killing my favorite bus line. "promotes satanism" my brother in christ it's a fucking joke. polish christians get a grip challenge.

however,

the bus line's response to the controversy over the number was to change 666 to 669. which is some of the most beautiful malicious compliance i have seen in a while. and it makes up for the hope in humanity i lost while reading the above screenshot.

Nearly 70 years ago, civil rights leader Bayard Rustin was arrested, served 50 days in Los Angeles County jail, and had to register as a sex offender with the state due to a charge of “vagrancy” after he was seen being intimate with two men in a parked car. In 2020, Rustin was posthumously pardoned by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Rustin was close to Martin Luther King Jr., was an organizer of the 1963 march on Washington, and assisted with other nonviolent protests and boycotts for civil rights.

From the official pardon: “California, like much of the nation, has a disgraceful legacy of systematically discriminating against the LGBTQ community. This discrimination has taken many forms including social isolation and shaming, surveillance, intimidation, physical violence, and unjust arrest and prosecution. Mr. Rustin was sentenced pursuant to a charge commonly used to punish gay men for engaging in consensual adult sexual conduct. His conviction is part of a long and reprehensible history of criminal prohibitions on the very existence of LGBTQ people and their intimate associations and relationships. … Mr. Rustin was criminalized because of stigma, bias, and ignorance. With this act of executive clemency, I acknowledge the inherent injustice of this conviction, an injustice that was compounded by his political opponents’ use of the record of this case to try to undermine him, his associates, and the civil rights movement.”
