Hi, I'm here to talk about something people don't usually realize is a problem, and I'm counting on Tumblr's ability to actually give a shit about things sometimes to actually pay attention.

So there's this thing called Celiac disease. A lot of people have it, me included, and it's an autoimmune disorder. The way it works is simple:

I eat gluten

My body screams and eats my intestines in response.

Not a good time, as you can imagine. As a result, people with Celiac have to avoid gluten at all costs. It's not like an intolerance where you feel sick but will recover. If you have celiac and are exposed to even the slightest amount of gluten, it will cause lasting and sometimes permanent damage to your body. It's a genuinely serious disorder.

Now here's the big issue. No one gives a shit about how careful we have to be. The tiniest amount of gluten can be enough to trigger a reaction.

I cannot kiss someone who has eaten gluten recently, or else I risk cross contamination.

This isn't some gluten free fad. This isn't some diet I can cheat on, or just an intolerance that isn't serious. I can develop cancer from eating bread. Literal. Fucking. Cancer. And just the tiniest amount of gluten is enough to trigger an immune response.

People with Celiac can rarely trust any food they haven't prepared themselves. Even food labeled as "gluten free" isn't always safe. Social gatherings where people bring food are a minefield. Restaurants are a huge risk each time.

I'm a college student, I have to eat in a dining hall. I'm terrified that I won't be able to eat anything other than salad, and even that's a risk because someone may have used the crouton tongs on the broccoli.

So please, if you work in food service and someone asks if things are gluten free, please be careful and please be honest. We're putting an insane amount of trust in you just by asking for food. Use a different cutting board, make sure to wash the knife. Little things like that can save us so much stress and pain.

It's like someone being diabetic and asking for the sugar free soda instead of the regular. We're not doing this as part of a fad diet, we're being so careful about what you serve because we don't get a choice.

i draw the batkids a lot but my faves are clark and bruce. unfortunately, they are really hard for me to draw but at least i can draw the kid versions of them

i think…the kents and alfred did their best to raise clark and bruce. no one knew the grand destinies ahead of them... they were just two very scared and lonely kids.

from what i've seen, a lot of conservative and centrist types (besides the politicians, they fucking suck) are actually 100% on board with reasonable environmental protection measures. but liberal politicians are just so fucking annoying and hypocritical about it, that everyone else gets put on the defensive.

My main thing is that I don’t trust the fuck government to enact any changes in a reasonable manner

yeah, the government is generally unreasonable, unreliable, hypocritical, etc.

when your neighbor says "i've been trying to use more glass containers because plastic is bad for your body and the environment, plus it's shit and doesn't last nearly as long" you'll get plenty of people thinking "oh yeah, that makes sense. just like my grandma and her mason jars. maybe i'll try that too."

but if a politician with a private jet and a mansion built on destroyed florida wetlands. says "bike to work an hour away every day. take 2 minute showers. eat bugs. if you don't we're all gonna die!" the people think "obviously the environment isn't in real danger or else you'd be doing this shit too. why the fuck should i suffer? this shit isn't even possible for me. fuck off."

Which I think are two completely reasonable and not at all contradictory opinions to think at the same time

This is it! This is what social media/smart tech have done! They’ve rotted away any distinction between private and public.

Yes, we do have the right to make demands on public behavior. Of course we do. Have you never heard of laws and etiquette? I’m not allowed to grocery shop naked. You can’t rummage through my purse. I can’t have a work meeting in the middle of a movie theatre.

I remember when it was taboo simply to answer your cell phone in public. The person answering would apologize and try to go to a more private area. Then public calls were normalized. Then putting people on speaker. Then listening to music without headphones. Do you know how many times I have hiked up a mountain or driven to the beach, only to be met with someone blaring shitty top 40 music from their portable speaker, because Heaven forbid you go one hour without noise?

Old woman yells at cloud and all that, but I can’t believe someone is not only admitting this behavior, but saying it’s a good thing! No one likes you! You’re a menace!

BEING INCONSIDERATE OF OTHERS IS STILL BAD.

It was obnoxious when it was youtube.

It was obnoxious when it was music.
