I had a think about it and now that the Rusty Fears winners have been announced, I’m going to put my entry up here for people to read if they like.
The theme I chose was “The Messenger”, I hope you enjoy my little spooky story!

Ciara’s reflection had been missing for a week.
“You know,” Jon took a gulp of his drink, “Daisy once told me she knew over a hundred ways to incapacitate someone. I was never sure if she was trying to threaten me or impress me,” Jon chuckled slightly.
“R-right…”
“Although honestly, I felt more threatened when she insisted on playing The Archers on the radio all day.”
“S-Sorry, what?”
“There were times I was sure she was trying to bore me to death.”
“Wait. Stop. Daisy likes The Archers?!”
“I know!” Jon laughed again, “I was just as surprised as you! She said she had eight months’ worth of episodes to catch up on and she wasn’t going to let anyone stop her.”
His laughter faded into a far softer sound and died off altogether as he took another drink and stared down into his mug.
“…I miss her,” He said quietly.

On the weight of grief. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ okay so heads up right out of the gate, this chapter was partially inspired by Martin’s line from ep 179:
MARTIN …
We said our goodbyes to Daisy after the institute.
So its going to deal with canonical character deaths, grieving and canon-typical references to suicide.
If that makes you uncomfortable, best to skip this one.
If you feel like I need to add any additional warnings to tags, please let me know.
(also! this is nearly 7000 words! again! me @ me: what is wrong with u)
Martin had one hand tucked under his face, the tips of his fingers poking out from his cheek and Jon was seized with the sudden urge to find his other hand and hold it closely.
From their trek out of the Lonely through the frantic chaos of the institute, Jon had held as tightly as he could onto Martin’s hand, only reluctantly letting go when he remembered he needed both hands to drive.
He didn’t have any excuse to take his hand now, no monsters to run from, no seascapes to break out of.
His chest grew tight and tender with an unpleasant ache. ~~ Chapter 2 of safehouse fic!
Includes:
By the time they got to the safehouse, they had been on the road for nearly ten hours and the sight of the tiny, quaint old cottage in the middle of nowhere was a blessed relief.
“Huh.”
“Not what you were expecting?” Jon asked, unbuckling his seat belt.
Martin shook his head.
“When you said it was Daisy’s, I thought it would be something a bit more The Hills Have Eyes.”
He stepped out of the car and reached up to the sky to stretch his back out. When he turned, Jon was staring at him from the other side of the car, nonplussed.
“It’s a horror film.” “Ah,” Jon pushed his glasses up his nose, “Right…”

i wrote scottish honeymoon fic and i know everyone has written scottish honeymoon fic but in my defense i only started listening to tma after s5 started! and i’m operating off of the two cakes principle! and also i wanted to get my version of how jm got together out of my head and onto paper so
aka mum said its my turn to write about the safehouse period!
besides, its the first thursday of the last hiatus, enjoy some relationship fluff before jonny inevitably destroys us with the ending next year
ANYWAYS 186 spoilers
i always gush about the latest ep with the friend who got me into tma after we listen and we got talking about how the possibilities raised in ‘quiet’ are all things that people have hoped for/theorised on/worried about- Martin having to kill Jon; having a big, dramatic confrontation with Elias; jmart dying in some tragic, noble sacrifice etc, etc.
and with all those things laid out so plainly for us I cant help but think they might be red herrings
or rather by acknowledging these possibilties now they can be dismissed later and all that means is something far far worse then any of that is waiting for us at the end of the line
started a tma sideblog for Thoughts bc there was too much of it going onto this one btw
I want to write. I have ideas. I open document. I type four of the worst sentences ever created in the english language. I daydream the rest of the scene. I close document.
In light of new evidence (aka the most recent eps) I’m revising my Jonah is Dead! theory
Jonah is not dead yet but in this world where the two states of being are either Watcher or Watched, I think jonah has become Watched he is a victim of the eye domain that london has become, physically bound to the institute/panopticon and directly feeding the eye with his fear, a point i did actually elaborate on in that previous post
it has become more and more obvious as s5 has gone on that even if jonah was some big bad gloating in his spooky tower, killing him would change nothing- he is not a determining factor in saving the world
however i’m starting to prefer the idea that he immediately fell victim to the eye as opposed to already being dead for a few reasons:
1. Sweet, sweet karma.
2. Delicious tragedy. Jmart and Co. finally gear up to confront Jonah but oops! He’s insensible and can’t even communicate with you, he has no effect on anything since the Change and your whole journey was pointless! :)
3. now as of 184 we know that jon can turned Watched into Watcher just as he has done the opposite. he won’t turn jonah into a Watcher but it does raise the question then, how do they kill him?
it is possible that bc daisy was able to be killed, jon’s ceaseless watcher laser eyes would still work on jonah bc of the apocalypse’s “dream logic” but.
I cannot imagine anything more simutaneously more cathartic and horrifying to hear than jon brutally murdering the man who groomed him with his bare hands- no powers, no beholding, just as human and as mundane a murder as jonah himself committed.
cant w8 for london
Jonny really said fuck academia for the sake of academia and classic circle-jerk philosophy this ep huh
I love that both in and out of statement explored the dismantling of Smirke’s 14.
It’s been a running theme in s5 that these divisions really don’t matter and I’ve been loving it. Hell, even the catalyst for the apocalyspe was Jonah acknowledging that trying to separate the fears in the first place was the wrong way to go about bringing them into reality. Jon had to be marked by all of them for Jonah’s ritual to work.
There’s been an undercurrent of domains being mixes of different fears for a while (even last week’s as I was listening to 182 i wondered was it stranger? web? flesh?) so to have it explictly confirmed that yes, there’s a domain out there that is both eye and lonely was great (great lore-wise, not great Martin-wise)
But I think my favorite part was this:
I caught up with tma on ep 175 so I wasn’t around when web!Martin theory starting gaining traction but whenever I see anything about it literally all I can think of is that bit from ep 117
Oh, oh, Christ, I hope Jon doesn’t actually listen to these. “Good lord, is Martin becoming some sort of spider person?” No, Jon, it’s an expression, chill out!
and I laugh everytime
“I do not like this.”
“Yes. You’ve said.”
“Well. I’m saying it again. For the record.”
“What record?”
Martin glared down at where Jon sat, stretching out his injured leg.

After leaving Basira behind, Jon and Martin talk. Set just after "Accomplice".
thinking about how even though basira has finally admitted that she knew she was in the wrong she is still clinging to the idea of daisy and their partnership thinking about how when martin told her they were there for her and she immediately shut him down
thinking about how basira will never be able to accept anyone else as an ally or a friend until she lets daisy go

Listen ep 177 was A Lot I think we can all agree, so I’m just thinking about the fluff ep instead, here’s some scotland jm
my thesis supervisor encouraged me to mess around with a poster making website for practice and instead of doing anything useful, I graphic-designed up a fan theory I’ve been thinking about for a while

*busts on your dash like its a courtroom in ace attorney and i have surprise evidence* WAIT I CAN BACK THIS UP FURTHER
to get meta about it, the theory of the panopticon, like the real-life architectural idea that was put forward by Jeremy Bentham and metaphor/theory expanded on by Michel Foucault has a critical component to it that reinforces this theory even more
To quote Foucault:
“It is at once, too much and too little that the prisoner should be constantly observed by an inspector: too little, for what matters is that he knows himself to be observed; too much, because he has no need in fact of being so.”
There doesn’t have to be anyone looking out of the central tower for the panopticon to function. The prisoner will self-regulate their behaviour because they don’t know who is looking or when they are so they have to always be on guard.
There’s no escaping observation in the changed world that Jon and Martin walk through, but Jonah doesn’t need to be in the panopticon for that constant observing to happen
there is no watcher in the watchtower

OP I apologize in advance, but I have essayitis and it’s incurable
This is honestly one of the best what-Jonah-is-up-to theories I’ve seen. Not just because it’s, ‘Yay! The fucker’s dead!’ but because, wow, wouldn’t that just be a massive shortcut to the big tragic un-reveal that there is no magic undo button for the Change. No Big Boss Villain to defeat. No fix-it switch.
I just reread the transcript for “The Sick Village,” and I realized I was misremembering a line. I heard Jon say, “I can feel him moving in there.” But that wasn’t it. The script goes:
MARTIN: “How is [Jonah/Elias]?”
Jon: “Hard to say. The, The way this works, this - new sight, the knowledge is, is… (sigh) somehow wrapped up in the Panopticon? An eye can’t - see inside itself. But I can feel him in there.”
Not moving, just there. And isn’t it so funny and convenient that the Eye can’t* let Jon magically Know what’s going on in there?
*If I didn’t know better, I’d almost assume it was pulling the same selective-enlightenment gimmick it did to him pre-s5, going out of its way to dissuade him from learning anything that might hinder his Archivist evolution and/or let him escape the Institute. But I’m sure the Eye wouldn’t do that now.**
**It’s not like it’s been purposefully drawing Jon to the Panopticon like a pin to a magnet, using the lure of Confronting-Jonah-Will-Help-Things!-No-Really!-Honest!-Jonah-Who-Is-Definitely-Alive-And-For-Sure-Sent-Those-Tapes-To-The-Cabin-Which-You-Couldn’t-Actually-Tell-The-Origins-Of!
So yeah, I can buy Jonah being dead. Maybe the Change didn’t give him all the bells and whistles he was expecting and he tried to make a demand too many of a patron Fear that had long since grown bored of him. Maybe he’s trapped in the Panopticon, fused into its stonework, omniscient at last, but immobile and useless.
Or maybe he was planning to do what others have theorized–an attempt at doing a body snatcher job on Jon to steal his status and the Eye, player-of-favorites that it is, reacted very, very poorly to someone thinking of doing harm to its Archivist. What did Jon say in “Revolutions” again?
JON: “God forbid you actually catch us. Doesn’t bear thinking about.”
I’ve been wondering about that bit ever since it dropped. The way he phrases it, it sounds less like ‘I, the Archivist, will zap you,’ and more like ‘Touch me and the Eye will zap you.’ As if the Ceaseless Watcher is content to smite Jon’s targets when asked, but will act on its own if the domains/avatars take a real swing at him. If so, it makes sense that the avatars with actual brain cells to rub together–hi, Oliver and Annabelle–have given him plenty of space.
Which would also tie in neatly to Jonah not only being dead, but dying by hubris. He got what he wanted. His plot worked, the Change came, and he was a king of a ruined world. He could’ve been satisfied with that. But he was still not the most powerful player; not the Eye’s dear demigod Archivist, the favorite avatar, the Harbinger. And so he planned to take Jon’s spot with another eye swap.
A plan the Eye Knew the moment it occurred to him.
Meaning, if both these theories hold, that would mean Jonah was smote by his own god for taking aim at the one and only person in the world that was off-limits. RIPieces.
please feel free to keep derailing oh my god
im sitting here with my head in my hands thinking about this but also grinning like a lunatic bc it makes so much sense
I never even thought that the eye might keep info from jon if it didn’t want him to know like it did before! he thinks he is omniscient but how would he know if he wasnt if the eye didn’t want him to know!!
something big is going to happen to jon as soon as they get to “his” domain and the idea terrifies me
i had heard the jonah body-snatching jon theory floating around and didn’t pay it much mind but in conjuction with what you’ve proposed it makes perfect sense and ties it all together
also the karmic retribution is delicious
honestly 10/10 addition, chef’s kiss
