on a serious note regarding the wga strike and (as of 1:50 AM PST 7/13) upcoming sag-aftra strike, dsa-la has a fundraiser called The Snacklist which provides snacks and water on the picket lines here in LA. right now the funds they have will not last through the end of the summer, especially given the current and upcoming heatwaves necessitating more supplies. if you have a couple of dollars to spare it's a great way to directly support the writers (and potentially the actors) during this difficult time!

happy first sag-aftra strike in 60 years to all who celebrate.

if you are an enjoyer of media (which i will guess based on your presence on tumblr that you are) please consider donating to the snacklist (linked above) or to any of the following mutual aid funds that directly support striking actors/writers, IATSE and teamster union members who are also out of work and by and large refusing to cross the picket lines, and nonunion PAs and assistants (like yours truly) who are directly impacted by the work stoppage. everyone in this industry works unbelievably hard to bring you the shows, movies, webseries, and variety programs that you enjoy and every worker deserves a fair contract. any support you can give is extremely meaningful.

The Entertainment Community Fund provides emergency financial assistance to anyone in the entertainment industry who is unable to pay their immediate basic living expenses such as housing, food, bills, and healthcare.

The Union Solidarity Coalition has been formed by members of the wga, sag, and the dga to help cover the cost of healthcare for IATSE and teamsters who will not get enough work hours to qualify for their coverage this year due to their refusal to cross a picket line.

The Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund (also run by the Entertainment Community Fund but separate from the above link which supports all film and tv workers) offers assistance to tv and film support staff and assistants who are not protected by a union and have been displaced from low or entry level positions.

Drive 4 Solidarity is an IATSE organized event in August raising funds for all union and guild members. Tickets are available for those in socal but donations are being taken as well.

Humanitas Groceries for Writers fund provides WGA members with grocery gift cards.

Green Envelope Grocery is a grocery fund for all workers in the entertainment industry regardless of union status.

HEY CALIFORNIA PEOPLE!

HURRICANE ADVICE FROM A FLORIDIAN!

Make sure you've got shelf-stable food and water for everyone in the house, including pets. The rule of thumb is a gallon per person per day. Freeze water bottles if you want cold water.

Make sure you have enough meds!

Make sure you have batteries, candles, flashlights, and a manual can opener.

Make sure your electronics, including backup batteries, are charged. Unplug things you don't want fried in case of a power surge.

Don't tape your windows, it doesn't help and you'll just be stuck scrubbing goo off of them later.

Put a mug of frozen water in it in your freezer with a quarter on top of it. If your freezer defrosts, the ice will melt and the quarter will sink and tell you you need to throw things out.

Get everything that's not nailed to a foundation out of your yard. That dead branch hanging on by a thread? Time to get it down (it was probably time to do that three days ago, but now’s better than never).

Park away from powerlines and trees if you can. Rain makes the ground soft and then trees fall over.

Have an evacuation plan to a shelter. Evacuate if they’re telling you to.

If you start to flood, don't go in your attic. You'll get trapped if the water rises too high and you can't hack through your roof. This happened to a lot of people in Texas and Louisiana. Get ON the roof.

Be safe, be well <3

What the fuck?

???? WHAT???

Ngl, "tropical storm in death valley" was not on my 2023 bingo card.

Drainage on our roads is shitty in SoCal, don't attempt to drive through water deep enough to touch your bumpers and don't attempt to walk across moving water, water only as deep as your ankles can knock you down and sweep you away.

Predicted wind speeds are similar to strong Santa Anas, so lock things down like you would for that, though keep in mind that yeah the combination of heavy rain and wind leads to more felled trees than just wind.

Take photos of the inside of your home now; flood insurance fucking sucks here and if you're in a possible flood zone you want as much documentation of your home and belongings as possible in case you need to make a claim.

Freezing water bottles also means you've got a lot of ice in your freezer if power goes out, and safe potable water once it thaws, so freeze bottles of water to have something to keep your fridge and freezer cool and store more water regardless of if you want cold water.

Remember water expands when you freeze it so pour a bit out of each bottle so they don't explode.

If you can't get bottled water anymore use sandwich bags full of ice for the same effect

Get a pet carrier or kennel ready in case of evac, shelters usually only allow contained animals

Pet go bags need leash, collars/harness, 3 days of food, and current vaccine records

Animals spook during storms and will slip a collar to flee if given a chance. Don't give them a chance, and do not chase them if they do

Rule of thumb down here is 3 days worth of food, but a week is probably better in places where hurricanes are not common

Fill your bathtub before the storm, floods often damage the water system and this will give you flushing and bathing water for a few days

Try to stay out of floodwaters all together, they are often full of sewage and can hide powerlines, sinkholes, and all kinds of dangers

Post storm: your fridge will stay cold for roughly 24 hrs if you never open it. Pack perishables in cooler bags before the storm, use some of your frozen water bottles as ice packs. Eat all that stuff first and if you're very lucky the power will return within 24 hrs

Do Not Cook in your home with an open flame

Do not run generators inside or under your roof. Generators like grills should be at least 20-30ft from the structure when running

1. If you need to evacuate, TURN OFF THE POWER AND WATER to your dwelling before leaving. Service may be disrupted, but you don’t want either connected when it comes back on again and no one’s home.

2. This is the time to get phone numbers/ emails/ WhatsApp details for your neighbors. Yes, you may hate them. Or you may never have spoken to them. But it’s great to have contact with people who are seeing different things than you are when you no longer have access to normal news sources. In my area, even local webcams went down when the hurricane came through. Contact with people who had decided to shelter in place (don’t do this) was critical for us and for them.

3. Those outdoor solar garden lanterns are a great emergency light source if power goes out.

4. Wind can drive water through the cracks in tightly closed windows. Consider putting absorbent material like towels and mops nearby. It won’t hold a lot of moisture but if the amount is small, it can keep it from seeping into your drywall.

5. Once you get back, if you have to leave again (because water and power is still out) OPEN A COUPLE WINDOWS. Just a crack, but keep air flowing to discourage mold. After the hurricane passes you’ll have the most beautiful, clear weather you’ve ever seen for a couple weeks; don’t worry about rain getting in.

This will be amazing, though!

Just think about it:

We are in the era after it caused SO MUCH, and caused so many sites to put in blocks and other restrictions to stop it from scraping everything

If they are forced to wipe their entire dataset then they won't be able to get even a fraction of it back!

Not only that, but they would be forced to get permission of the owners for everything they use. Which would IMO, actually kill most of the issues with AI and actually make the technology into something actually useful.

If it generally scuttles along the floor then you got a crreature. if it's Out there eating up your prized jasmine, then that's a varmint. and if it gnashes you. then you got yourself a beastie

Amazing how everything they say about this game makes me want to play it less and less

this is because it'll take 130 hours for the community bugfix patches to come out

It’s a real problem for games to hide the actual content well beyond the typical refund window (2 hours if you’re on Steam) The beginner content could be slow and trash as you wait for it to “get good”, but if it never does you’re shit out of luck because you’re too far in to get a refund

It's annoying that these are the most commonly used images of Venus because neither one is remotely what the planet actually looks like to the human eye. The one on the left is a radar image of the terrain below the cloud cover and the one on the right is an infrared view with greatly exaggerated colours. In actual reality the planet looks like an almost featureless white disk. The photo below was made by the MESSENGER probe on its way to Mercury and it's the most accurate to visible light close-up view of Venus we have.

its crazy how many people are being like "oh in honour of jimmy buffet", "oh rest in peace jimmy buffet". he isn't resting in peace. he is going to hell. he's down there.

he wrote a few shit songs about "island escapism" (try to think about that one for more than five seconds), got rich off of it, and then opened a shitty chain restaurant. he will not be resting in peace.

a lot of people barely even know who he is outside of maybe a couple of songs or jokes about him but if you do know who he is and you unironically believe that a rich white guy who made his entire career on selling an experience of tropical exoticism to people deserves to be remembered fondly then i do not trust you

I know most of the ppl going Aww only know Jimmy Buffett from mbmbam even though you guys pretend not to have listened to mbmbam lol but in more detail:

He had Margaritaville resorts in the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands

Resorts colonize land in tropical areas & fuck up local economies, often inviting trafficking of locals & a million other issues (I rec Tourism Is The New Slavery by Foreign Man on YouTube for a primer if this isn't something you're really aware of)... Also he was super misogynistic and wrote like 30 songs about cheating on his wife lol...

I know the whole thing of like, Celebrity Dies, Write A List Of Why They're Problematic can be tiring or even kind of fucked in some cases, but with Jimmy Buffett he was materially contributing to the exploitation of indigenous people and cultures in multiple countries and I'm going to be reblogging this every time I see someone being corny about him

elon musk should kill himself elon musk needs to kill himself elon musk would make society as a whole better if he killed himself now

Sorry to break the theme of the blog but a lot of people who post their incredible works here use Twitter so

Reblogging this for a second time because your art will also be used in AI training models, apparently.
