I always knew something was fucked up with that artificial sugar shit. Never liked it, I was genuinely confounded by the number of people who claimed it tasted identical.

NO.

this is about the IARC not the FDA. the IARC (international agency for research on cancer) is part of the WHO (world health organization) and not a food safety agency. they classify "agents" (chemical, physical, or biological entities or exposure circumstances) based on how likely they are to cause cancer:

Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans (126 agents)

Group 2A: Probably carcinogenic to humans (94 agents)

Group 2B: Possibly carcinogenic to humans (322 agents)

Group 3: Not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans

this new classification of aspartame as 2B "possibly carcinogenic to humans" is the result of a review of available studies, and mostly intended to encourage additional research. it is not aimed at consumers/the public and it does not take dosage or frequency into account.

for context: apart from aspartame, group 2B includes things like "aloe vera, whole leaf extract", "carpentry", "magnetic fields", and "traditional asian pickled vegetables"

"occupation as a hairdresser or barber", "very hot beverages at above 65°C" (149°F), and "consumption of red meat" are all classified as 2A

and Group 1 includes "alcoholic beverages", "epstein-barr virus", "salted fish", "processed meat", and being a painter.

anyway. this is fearmongering and disinformation. stop using memes for news and dont reblog "news" posts without sources.

original reuters report:

where is that net zero information quote

I still can't get over that once, I saw someone write that they disliked Elizabeth Bennet because she was an "author avatar Mary Sue."

I understand taking that viewpoint if you only read the first half of Pride and Prejudice, before Darcy's letter. The impression the first half creates is "Most of these people are silly, obnoxious, or both. Witty, sensible, charming Elizabeth, who's usually the smartest person in the room, cleverly judges and mocks them all, while giving warm affection and esteem to the few who really deserve it." This is more or less the way she views herself and the narrative plays along with it. If you stop reading before Darcy's letter, then she might indeed come across as an "author avatar Mary Sue."

But then all of the above is deconstructed by Darcy's letter.

Elizabeth realizes – and we realize – that she hasn't been such a good judge of character or the cleverest person in the room after all. Her cynical, witty judgments have been just as faulty as her sister Jane's naïve idealism. She's been full of herself, and she's judged Darcy more negatively than he ever deserved (not that he hasn't been at fault too, but still...) because he stung her personal vanity, while letting herself be charmed and misled by Wickham because he flattered her. She's been very much at fault and she learns a lesson, just like we later learn that Darcy did after she rejected him.

A similar arc applies to Mr. Bennet, the person who has clearly influenced Elizabeth the most throughout her life. At first we're set up to like him for his wit, and to view him as the good, sensible Bennet parent in contrast to his silly, obnoxious wife. But then we realize – and Elizabeth is forced to realize – that no, he hasn't been a good parent, he's been irresponsible and mean-spirited toward his wife and younger daughters, and he's just as much to blame as Mrs. Bennet for all their problems.

How anyone can call Elizabeth a Mary Sue after reading the entire book is beyond me. Some people can't seem to let go of their first impression of her, even though the faultiness of first impressions is one of the novel's main themes.

One of the worst parts of current internet culture is that it makes good old fashioned complaining so difficult. I don’t wanna cancel anyone or bully anyone, I’m not trying to form a hate mob I’m not calling anyone out, i just wanna bitch about something. Because complaining is fun, good for you, even. Is that too much to ask? Where is the room for shooting the shit?

Struggling to comprehend how an emerging nation, which declared its independence because it didn’t want to be at the mercy of a king who had no accountability to the people, then created the Supreme Court, a group of people who have 0 oversight, are held accountable to no one but themselves for the remainder of their lives, and have the final say in what the law is for the entire country. The alleged “checks and balances” system doesn’t actually mean shit to them.

Because the Founders didn't imagine Marbury v Madison.

Marbury is the original sin of SCOTUS. It was a blatant power grab where they declared themselves the arbiter of the Constitution, unchecked. And it kept grabbing more and more power for itself and Congress never intervened. To this day, SCOTUS is one of the only Courts of last resort in the world that can declare legislation lawfully passed as unconstitutional. No other courts have that power.

The thing is, SCOTUS is only as powerful as we let it become. They have no enforcement mechanism. They have no army. They command nothing.

We can literally just ignore the Supreme Court.

"Thanks for your opinion but I'm going to wipe away debt anyway," says Biden in an alternate universe where he's cooler.

And then SCOTUS can't do shit about it.

this is a message for everyone who is 22. if you’re 22 please stop worrying. take a deep breath eat a bagel maybe. everything that feels impossible is going to work itself out. have a great day

do u have a message for 25 year olds

uhhhhh 2 bagels?

I'm 32. When I was in my early twenties, I overheard a pair of 50ish year old women talking about the ideal age to stay at permanently. One said, "Everyone says 25. I wouldn't want to be in my twenties forever. Everything is hard and you get upset too easily."

Hearing her say that helped me so much. I thought about it countless times. Every time things felt overwhelming, I remembered what she said. The words of this total stranger, who wasn't even talking directly to me, brought me a lot of comfort, so I hope they can help you, too.

seeing everyone just mindlessly sign up for threads despite all the clear warning signs feels like I’m living in Sailor Moon or a magical girl anime episode where the Monster of the Day just set up shop over night and their product is literally draining your lifeforce for the Dark Kingdom but people keep going there

Yesterday I almost cried because my baby cousin ran up to my grandmother and was like. “Ha! Buhbuh ba ha.” And she said okay you want to show me something? And he led her over to the garden patch and crouched down and pointed at rocks and plants and was like. “Ah. Habah ba ah” as she listened attentively.

And I was like that happened 1,000 years ago. Probably 10,000 years ago. Maybe 100,000. The youngest human in a group went to the oldest one and said to the best of their ability “come see.” And the adult went.

happy disability pride month to people with rare or confusing clinical findings! including:

  • people who received test results their doctors did not understand!
  • people who had to get expensive and/or unusual testing, and the results didn't provide clarity!
  • people who have abnormal test results, who's doctors aren't sure if the results have any significance, or what that significance is!
  • people who had to learn to read studies in order to research their conditions, because the information has not been made accessible to the general public through articles and informative sites!
  • people who can't even find studies to read in the first place!
  • people who might never know if the results they have mean anything!
  • people with unexplained symptoms that could be related to an unusual test result, but they have no way of knowing!
  • people who are worried that their results could be pathogenic, but have no way of finding out!

sometimes, disability just isn't simple. it is really hard to have something markedly different about your body that doesn't make sense - not to you, not to professionals. when i was being tested for genetic disorders, they found that i had a duplication in one of my chromosomes, and my doctor told me that it could mean nothing, it could have caused some of my issues, or it could cause me issues in the future.

it was scary! it's been almost two years, and i don't know what it means. there isn't a single case report or study on this duplication. it is deeply disquieting to think about. i don't know what i'm meant to do, or if i can do anything at all. i have plenty of symptoms and features that could be related to it, but there is essentially no way for me to figure it out.

am i still trying to? hell yeah! am i going to try and get into contact with genetic specialists? hell yeah! but if nothing comes out of it, that's fine. it isn't a failing on my part, and it isn't irrational for me to be concerned or upset about it.

your condition does not have to have a name, or a mayo clinic page, or even a study on it for it to be real. your concerns are valid, and you deserve love and support.

happy pride!!

The white stripe in the Disability Pride Flag represents those with undiagnosed, invisible, and/or misunderstood disabilities (it's for you):

It's in the middle because the other classes of disability (physical, cognitive, mental illness, and sensory) can all manifest in invisible, confusing, and hard-to-diagnose, ways.

and remember that you don’t need a specific diagnosis to use mobility aids or other accommodations that improve your life! if something will make your life easier then you deserve to have that. get the walker or the shower chair or whatever else that you’ve been wishing for but putting off because you don’t feel like you need it “enough.” if it could help you at all then you do need it. you are alive right now and no official diagnosis could ever make you deserve relief and support more than you do in this exact moment.

A chimera occurs when genetically distinct tissues co-exist within the same plant. The mutant plants exhibit different sections of color on a flower.

best advice i’ve received recently is to stop being afraid of humiliation. allow yourself to be humiliated, to be humbled. and then you’ll grow

Once again Uncle Iroh comes to me, speaking words of wisdom.

“Pride is not the opposite of shame, but it’s source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.”
