1955-1963 Mercedes-Benz 190SL at Fuelfed Coffee and Classics in Winnetka, Illinois.

The 190SL shared some of the 300SL’s design details as well as its independent rear suspension, and the 105 horsepower (77 kW) 1.9 liter inline-four cylinder engine was derived from the 300SL’s inline-six.  One of the main differences is that the 190SL was built on a shortened version of the 190 sedan’s chassis while the 300SL’s chassis was developed as a street version of Mercedes-Benz’s race car.

The 190SL was a more civilized and more affordable alternative.  It was originally around $4000 USD, which is equal to about around $37,000 USD today.  By contrast, today’s most affordable Mercedes-Benz roadster is the SLC at $48,400 USD.

1962 Lincoln Continental convertible at a car show at a local church in the Chicago area.

I don’t remember where I’ve heard it before but I can imagine it being true that a four door convertible’s handling can be compared to a wet cardboard box on wheels.  The structural rigidity of a roof helps the handling of two-door cars, but a four-door car can become a lumbering mass on wheels without a roof.  But not all cars need to be sports cars to be impressive or likable.  When seeing the fourth generation Continental in person, it’s hard to deny its style and grace.  I was stunned by how it looked.  Its seemingly endless sharp, straight lines complemented by chrome accents and topped off with a carefully designed grille work together with the 4 oppositely opening doors and canvas top to create a car that brings elegance to a uniquely American style.  In the case of the Continental, the word “glamour” comes to mind.

1971-1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4.5 (W108) at Fuelfed Coffee and Classics in Winnetka, Illinois.

This is essentially a Mercedes S-class from the 1970s.  As the badge on the rear suggests, it features a 4.5 liter V8.  It cost $6,622 when it was new which is $40,600 today after adjusting for inflation.  By contrast, the current Mercedes S-class starts at around $90,000.
