ok, let me explain

I’ve never really done anything like this before. I just wanted to make a comic based on the greatest post on this website and I wanted it to become more and more detailed as it went along. It took me a little over a year to finish and it was all made without using a tablet.

Please click on the individual images to get the full experience. Thank you.

chipped

Man, this is such a perfect analogy. “Chipped”… Just damaged enough for it to show at times, but not nearly broken enough to warrant fixing. And so often does the chipped cup turn itself to show its undamaged side.

Trying to draw buildings

yo here’s a useful tip from your fellow art ho cynellis… use google sketchup to create a model of the room/building/town you’re trying to draw… then take a screenshot & use it as a reference! It’s simple & fun!

Sketchup is incredibly helpful. I can’t recommend it enough.

There’s a 3D model warehouse where you can download all kinds of stuff so you don’t have to build everything from scratch.

reblog to save a life

This is an incomplete tutorial, and it drives me crazy every time I see it come around.

We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldn’t even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.

Here’s the missing part of this tutorial:

How do you populate your backgrounds?

Well, here’s the answer:

If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.

The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of “plops” the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the person’s relation to their environment.

How do you fix this?

Well, here’s the simplest solution:

This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when they’re quickly planning compositions. It’s simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.

From Blacksad (artist: Juanjo Guarnido)

From Hellboy (Mike Mignola)

Even if your draftsmanship isn’t that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside – not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.

Your creations live in a unique world, and it is as much a character as any other member of the cast. Make it as believable as they are.

Great comments and tutorials!

I’m a 3d artist and have been exploring the possibilities of using 3d as reference for 2d poses. I want to add a couple of tips and things!

Sketchup is very useful for environment references, and I assume it’s reasonably easy to learn. If you’re interested in going above and beyond, I highly recommend learning a proper 3d modeling program to help with art, especially because you can very easily populate a scene or location with characters!

Using 3ds Max I can pretty quickly construct an environment for reference. But going beyond that, I can also pose a pretty simple ‘CAT’ armature (known in 3d as a rig) straight into the scene, which can be totally customized, from various limbs, tails, wings, whatever, to proportions, and also can be modeled onto and expanded upon (for an example, you could 3d sculpt a head reference for your character and then attach it to the CAT rig, so you have a reference for complex face angles!)

The armature can also be posed incredibly easily. I know programs exist for stuff like this - Manga Studio, Design Doll - but posing characters in these programs is always an exercise in frustration and very fiddly imo. A simple 3d rig is impossibly easy to pose.

By creating an environment and dropping my character rig into it, I have an excellent point of reference when it comes to drawing the scene!

Not only that, but I can also view the scene from whatever angle I could ever want or need, including the character and their pose/position relative to the environment.

We can even quickly and easily expand this scene to include more characters!

Proper 3d modeling software is immensely powerful, and if you wanted to, you could model a complex environment that occurs regularly in your comic or illustration work (say, a castle interior, or an outdoor forest environment) and populate the scene with as many perspective-grounded characters as you need!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look at this amazing addition! This is fantastic!

Not just poses, you can also do this with lighting. Playing with lights in Blender is pretty fun.

Another cool thing: http://www.makehumancommunity.org lets you generate a human model. Like a character creator in a game, but more flexible, and the result is ready to import into a 3d editor like Blender.

Some personal recs for those finishing/liking OMORI so far

After 6 years, this game made it to the top in less than a week….

Lately, RPG Maker games have been somewhat staying in the shadows. And as a (horror) RPG Maker sucker, even though I certify I suck at giving advice, I’d love to spread the word about some other similar projects. To either save you or throw you into a eternal cycle of despair.

So here you have… The Incredible Low Budget “You May Also Like…” Viddygame List For OMORI Fans (For Free!11)

(TW thread ver. for more info about plots and personal thoughts) (For RPG Maker fans, have this huge list kofy and I made with links provided and CWs listed! It’s still a big WIP but we update it regularly!)

I see tags like this so often, and I want to be like “Did you not notice the porn ban?” Tumblr isn’t dying in the sense that there’s news or it will die tomorrow. It’s dying in the sense that if you’ve been on the internet since the 90s, you know what the lifecycle of sites looks like, and Tumblr has peaked and is on its way down.

There are a few different blog-saving tools. I haven’t really checked them out since 2018 though. The most obvious one is Tumblr’s built-in export tool.

Hope you don’t mind me hopping onto this, but in case anyone could use some pointers:

Tumblr’s own export tool

Go to your account settings on the webpage and select the blog you want to export. Scroll down to the “Export” section and click the “Export [blog name]” button. Depending on your language settings the buttom might have a strangely worded label, but you shouldn’t be able to miss it.

Depending on the amount of posts on you blog the process can take a while; when I used it for my 40,000 post main it took about a week, but that might have changed now.

TumblThree

I personally use TumblThree to do weekly backups of my blogs as well as archive some prompt/reference/research blogs. It has a GUI (a user interface) and you can run it with two clicks after setting up your blog list and the types of media/posts you want to include in the different backups. It’s also open source.

However it is (currently?) only for downloading backups, not viewing them, meaning you’ll have a bunch of downloaded files that you’ll have to figure out how to render as posts yourself. If you search “TumblThree Viewer” you might find some code to help you with that.

tumblr-utils

I’ve heard good things about tumblr-utils too, although I’ve not used it. I believe it’s command-line only, but it does apparently create backups you can view in your browser like Tumblr’s built-in tool does.

Thanks!

I have about 12k posts on my main and it only took an hour or something for the download to be ready yesterday.

I recall there used to be some other lower-tech options, but they’re probably all dead by now.

For tumblr-utils, refer back to the post (+1) (+2) I made before the purge. I’ve been using it to back up my blog ever since.

shoutout to the guy in charge of the train station at my hometown, who doesn’t limit himself to announcing trains but also:

  • comments on interesting birds he sees on the platform
  • gives completely unofficial weather reports on what he thinks the day is going to be like
  • refers to very crowded trains as ‘friendly trains’
  • regularly congratulates everyone on having gotten up on time on Monday mornings
  • basically seems to use the tannoy system to amuse himself and try and brighten up everyone’s morning commute
  • refers to himself as ‘the fat controller’

what magical land do u live where there’s something other than a robot in charge of the train announcing

Once on IMDB I saw a “goof” which was that during a scene set in India(?), the light flicker was at the wrong frequency (in hertz). I wish I knew what movie it was to show you guys, I want to say it was some Marvel shit.

I always wondered how this person knew that. Was there an amazing Indian electrician who just instinctively felt the flicker rate was off? Did they go frame by frame and count the flickers per second?

I wanna say that was Tenet?

Hot take but I don’t think “Hetero” couples in fiction are boring actually I just think they’re boring because we see the same m/f couples every single time.

Allow me to elaborate:

Usually every m/f couple we see in media consists of two conventionally attractive, young, skinny, allosexual, cishet, gender conforming, often white people. And you can always see the relationship coming a mile away.

Imagine how much better it would feel if you saw more of THESE kinds of m/f couples in media:

  • Fat characters involved in the relationship, and not made into a joke
  • Disabled characters involved in the relationship, and not made into a joke
  • A man happily in love with a gnc or masculine woman
  • A woman happily in love with a gnc or feminine man
  • Bisexual or pansexual men and women in love with the opposite sex (and bi for bi, Pan for Pan couples)
  • A man happily in love with a trans woman
  • A woman happily in love with a trans man
  • Trans for trans m/f couples
  • Asexual and gray-sexual people in romantic relationships and being respected in those relationships
  • Two middle aged people entering a new relationship, with the same attention and slow burn and tension as any young pairing (because middle aged and elder people have love lives too, and can fall in love again even if they’ve been married before!! See Kane/Abby in the 100.)
  • More POC x POC relationships!
  • A man who stays at home and takes care of kids x a working woman who isn’t criticized for not being home enough
  • Supportive parents to queer kids
  • Punk/alternative/goth m/f couples and parents (bc I just think that’s cool)
  • Couples who get together and then realize they’re better as friends, and have a healthy breakup while staying super close (and not creating secret drama)
  • Neurodivergent people involved in the relationship (adhd/autistic men and women infodumping to their supportive partner… happy stimming after a cute interaction with their crush.. it’s just so good) and not made into a joke or infantilized!
  • BUFF STRONK WOMAN x LIDDOL MAN VERY IN LOVE WITH HIS WIFE
  • People who aren’t conventionally attractive in a loving relationship, and there isn’t any drama or weird side plot about “learning to love someone for what’s on the inside!!”
  • and so many more I could think of!!!

Just something to think on. (And remember, not all m/f couples are “hetero”. If you’re still saying “ew heteros!!” every time you see a straight couple, now is the time to stop.)
