Babies Experiencing Things For The First Time

First time watching fireworks:

First time being dunked into water that’s way too cold:

First time getting caught in a bubble shower:

First time driving through a dark tunnel:

First time chatting with a puppet:

First time finding a new recipe in a cooking magazine:

First time forgetting how spoons work:

First time seeing ice cream:

Whenever I’m feeling sad, I look at this and realise how fucking amazing the world is

How can you hate babies when they’re the friggin best?

Babies make the best faces because they don’t know what restraint is. They just put 100% of whatever they’re currently feeling onto their faces and it’s adorable.

That scene in iron man where Obadiah stane is buttoning up Tony’s shirt (after he shows him the arc reactor) gives me the creep

There’s a lot about obadiah and Tony that are fucking classic tells of a toxic relationship women so often find themselves in. It’s creepy because its real. Same with the scene of obadiah taking the reactor out of a helpless, paralyzed Tonys chest. It’s rape without the sex. It’s the nightmare so many of us have lived or live in fear of. I’m honestly so glad they made Tony to be the “damsel in distress” if only for the fact so many more people can now realize these things.

“It’s rape without the sex” That scene always gave me the absolute creeps and this post really finally helped me put my finger on why that was. Especially as he had essentially been roofied.

Yeeeeeup. everything about it has always made me see direct parallels to sexual assault. i hate it and it makes me sick to my stomach but it’s such an important and masterfully done piece of cinema.

tony has been incapacitated. his consent cannot be given and yet he is aware of whats happening. obadiah is gloating over him - and it doesn’t help matters that he’s almost straddling tony, only furthering his power play. and not only is he gloating, but he’s blaming tony for this. it’s tony’s fault he’s in this situation. furthermore, obadiah was someone he trusted like family, and about the last person he would expect this from. and for the cherry on top, the camera is off center and tilted, almost putting us in tony’s perspective, making everything feel just so many kinds of uncomfortable as he’s being assaulted.

Thank you.

THANK YOU.

I’m honestly glad I was not the only one skeeved out by this because honestly - I’ve been wanting to say it for years, but I was always terrified that someone would say I was just reading into it too much.

I mean…let’s be frank (especially if we are talking about parallels to rape/sexual assault):

Tony was a playboy - he was not shy about his drinking, sexual history, or lifestyle. He had garnered a reputation for it. While fun loving and a good time kind of guy, he makes sure that consent is present during any liaison.

Here’s Obediah - this huge wall of a guy, acting like a friend and mentor. It gives him an in to be close, touchy-feely under the guise of a friend. Tony trusts him, hence why the closeness doesn’t bother him. That’s just how Obie is! Right? Right….

Tony has a traumatic encounter that changes his entire life….and no one takes him seriously. Pepper, Rhodey, Obediah - they are all guilty of trying to tell him that he just needs to sit back and get over it/get his mind straight/threaten to walk out on him because they think he’s crazy.

Huh….what does that sound like? Sounds like dismissal - a regrettably loathsome reaction many have towards victims of trauma and while not malicious (except for established douchebag Obediah), it can make bad situations worse and gives Obediah the perfect in for Tony’s downfall (the injunction, claiming it’s for his own good, all that jazz…exerting a shit ton of power over Tony and simultaneously trying to strip Tony of what power he has left)

To make matters worse - the scene itself where Obediah assaults Tony: Tony is alone. He is vulnerable. Obediah overpowered him, incapacitated him, but left him fully aware of what was going on. He penetrated him without consent (the mechanism literally punched in and pulled his “heart” out), gas lit him to hell and back by using not only his own past but his father’s past to justify his treatment bring “deserved”…..and then leaving him broken and for dead.

The reason a lot of people didn’t view it that way: we don’t normally see a man - especially an outgoing superhero type - being stripped of his agency in a brutally visceral manner. Its s shocking scene to begin with….but it gradually gets worse when you put it through the lens of a rape victim.

If that isn’t a giant parallel for sexual assault, I don’t know what is.

Oh and the fact obadiah has basically been grooming tony since he was a teen, robbing him of bodily autonomy, pressuring him and forcing him into situations he doesn’t particularly want to be in, and always asserting his dominance with grabbing/holding/touching, or in some cases like OP pointed out, even dressing him. Obie is a predator in every sense of the word, and way too similar to how a rapist behaves for it to be a coincidence.

I hate, hate, hate this scene. It makes me so uncomfortable that I can barely watch it. IM1 has some of the most vicious, brutal scenes in the MCU and glosses over much less than the following ones.

It’s a brilliant movie but a painful one as soon as you look beyond the shiny armor.

okay i dont normally reblog stuff like this, but i’ve mentioned in tags tons of times that their entire dynamic creeped me out. I’d never talked about it this in depth before but yeah, he definitely used touch as manipulation, and I believe he touched tony more than any other character this entire movie

(yes i spent way too much time making that.)

When Tony gets back from Afghanistan, gets out of the car with the burgers, Obadiah has at least one of his hands on him the entire way into the building. As someone else mentions – he buttons up tony’s shirt which - yeah tony has a busted arm, but he unbuttoned it relatively easily – so the creep factor still applies. and then you’ve got the other examples too. Also the fact that they’re business partners//mentor/mentee//father/son dynamic …. and obadiah deadass calls tony shirtless. like i dont know much about grown men but im pretty sure thats not that common even among friends.

and anyway if we look at the other characters who touch tony in this movie, it’s rhodey and pepper and christine. Tony in this movie doesn’t initiate touch nearly as much – he usually reacts to it (e.g. even though he’s the ‘playboy’ christine is the one who takes the lead in sex. rhodey is the one who initiates almost all of their contact, etc). after this movie that changes. You can definitely see him start to initiate almost all touch, except with pepper and rhodey (e.g. him poking bruce, him slapping steves hand off him, but putting one on steve). this is definitely a way of asserting contol over a situation – idk if the writers did it purposefully…probably not, but it is interesting. one could argue, i suppose that afghanistan/torture is the cause, but….i think him being scarred by obadiah is more likely.

also, Obadiah used tony’s name. A Lot. We don’t really think about it bc with the Avengers it’s always last name, last name, last name. (the ones who call him tony are easy to notice – fury, pepper, rhodey, sometimes steve). But Obadiah uses Tony’s name a lot more than seemingly necessary. And we all know calling people by their first names is a way of acknowledging them as a person, but also it also indicates familiarity/fondness aka a bond. Someone compiled a video of it.

I’d also like to mention how Tony hardly ever touches people later on, even Peter when he obviously treats the kid like his own.

Stane’s influence effected him years later, possibly even to the point of being afraid of becoming like him. As a lot of abuse and assault victims do, sexual or otherwise.

This is also demonstrated in IM2 with his reaction to Justin Hammer. I mentioned in another post that when Tony is at the race in Monico. Justin Hammer gets into his personal space intimating a relationship that is not present.

I’m actually quite upset with Pepper in this scene because Tony sees Justin approach and whispers to Pepper “Don’t leave me” and she still walks away.

At one point Justine is literally leaning on Tony and Tony mutters “god that’s awful” as he tries to pull away. Putting his sunglasses on so that no one can see his eyes.

It is only a few minutes later that we see Tony testing his blood for toxicity levels and decides to take over driving his own car in the race. This could just be seen as an attempt to just be reckless, but it is also a desperate need to assert control over something when he just escaped a moment where he was once again stripped of his choices and support by the people around him.

It might not seem that severe but for someone that has already dealt with trauma on the levels that Tony has, it could be triggering.

Me on my way to watch Avengers Endgame

If this is the same guy from Arizona, he’s super nice and I’ve met him. His real, legal name is Steve Rogers.

SO I WAS READING A PAGE FROM THE AVENGERS CHARACTER GUIDE AND LOOKING THROUGH GAMORAS WHEN I SAW IT.

A passage that struck me.

“Her skeleton is near-indestructible alloy, allowing her to survive falls that would kill others.”

So her story might not be over just yet as you remember the red skull saying to Thanos,

“You must loose what you love the most.” But throughout the scene he doesn’t mention about the person having to die-

Specifically:

“A soul for a soul.”

This could mean that Gamora is in the soul stone with the rest of our peeps. As this scene suggests when Thanos snaps:

In addition to this, we’ve seen characters enter their own minds in the past using powers given by an infinity stone or using sources from outside our planet. (-the ateroid that hit Wakanda giving them Vibranium) to visit people they love most who were both dead and alive. So it’s a quite the possibility that Gamora is one of the few actually alive and Thanos may know it.

Further on for proof is MARVEL twisting things while also putting it in plain sight.

Gamora could be a huge key into defeating Thanos, having known him better than anyone.

IN CONCLUSION:

MY GIRL IS ALIVE STILL AND WE WILL SEE HER IN THE NEXT GUARDIANS FILM.

Thank you for listening to my TED talk

If the Falcon & Winter Soldier TV show doesn’t have at least one scene where they’re both in a drive-thru at a fast food restaurant in full gear, arguing over what to order, then there really is no point.

“I want the chicken sandwich combo, so we’re getting the chicken sandwich combo!” Bucky says, voice growing louder near the end of the sentence. He just wants to eat, go home, take a hot shower, and then pass out on the couch while some dumb Netflix documentary plays on the TV.

Sam sighs, exasperated as his squeezes the steering wheel. “You got to pick our orders last time,” he replies. “Only fair that it’s my turn, and I say we’re getting the cheeseburgers.”

“Yeah, but didn’t I save your life while we were fighting?”

“Okay, first of all, you didn’t save my life so much as trip me at the exact moment someone tried to snipe me.”

“But I still saved your life.”

“Maybe you did, but also, I’m the one driving here and I can easily leave you on the side of the road.”

Bucky nods. “Cheeseburgers sound fine.”

I see this and raise you: bucky is driving and they’ve been through the mission from hell. at some point bucky probably got clipped by sam’s wings and Sam made some snide comments. then the entire drive home, Sam has been backseat driving

“Come on, we actually have cars that go faster than 60mph in this century”

“Even Steve knew how to change gears smoother it’s like being on a bucking bronco back here”

“It is fucking snowing outside can we please turn on the heating? Some of us weren’t raised in Siberia”

and bucky, so mad, gets into the drive thru, Sam demanding his cheeseburgers, and just goes:

Reading this thread;

Women In History

I grew up believing that women had contributed nothing to the world until the 1960′s. So once I became a feminist I started collecting information on women in history, and here’s my collection so far, in no particular order.

Lepa Svetozara Radić (1925–1943) was a partisan executed at the age of 17 for shooting at German soldiers during WW2. As her captors tied the noose around her neck, they offered her a way out of the gallows by revealing her comrades and leaders identities. She responded that she was not a traitor to her people and they would reveal themselves when they avenged her death. She was the youngest winner of the Order of the People’s Hero of Yugoslavia, awarded in 1951

23 year old Phyllis Latour Doyle was British spy who parachuted into occupied Normandy in 1944 on a reconnaissance mission in preparation for D-day. She relayed 135 secret messages before France was finally liberated.

image

Catherine Leroy, War Photographer starting with the Vietnam war. She was taken a prisoner of war. When released she continued to be a war photographer until her death in 2006.

Lieutenant Pavlichenko was a Ukrainian sniper in WWII, with a total of 309 kills, including 36 enemy snipers. After being wounded, she toured the US to promote friendship between the two countries, and was called ‘fat’ by one of her interviewers, which she found rather amusing.

image

Johanna Hannie “Jannetje” Schaft was born in Haarlem. She studied in Amsterdam had many Jewish friends. During WWII she aided many people who were hiding from the Germans and began working in resistance movements. She helped to assassinate two nazis. She was later captured and executed. Her last words were “I shoot better than you.”.

Nancy wake was a resistance spy in WWII, and was so hated by the Germans that at one point she was their most wanted person with a price of 5 million francs on her head. During one of her missions, while parachuting into occupied France, her parachute became tangled in a tree. A french agent commented that he wished that all trees would bear such beautiful fruit, to which she replied “Don’t give me any of that French shit!”, and later that evening she killed a German sentry with her bare hands.

After her husband was killed in WWII, Violette Szabo began working for the resistance. In her work, she helped to sabotage a railroad and passed along secret information. She was captured and executed at a concentration camp at age 23.

Grace Hopper was a computer scientist who invented the first ever compiler. Her invention makes every single computer program you use possible.

image

Mona Louise Parsons was a member of an informal resistance group in the Netherlands during WWII. After her resistance network was infiltrated, she was captured and was the first Canadian woman to be imprisoned by the Nazis. She was originally sentenced to death by firing squad, but the sentence was lowered to hard lard labor in a prison camp. She escaped.

Simone Segouin was a Parisian rebel who killed an unknown number of Germans and captured 25 with the aid of her submachine gun. She was present at the liberation of Paris and was later awarded the ‘croix de guerre’.

image

Mary Edwards Walker is the only woman to have ever won an American Medal of Honor. She earned it for her work as a surgeon during the Civil War. It was revoked in 1917, but she wore it until hear death two years later. It was restored posthumously.

Italian neuroscientist won a Nobel Prize for her discovery of nerve growth factor. She died aged 103.

EDIT

jinxedinks added: Her name was Rita Levi-Montalcini. She was jewish, and so from 1938 until the end of the fascist regime in Italy she was forbidden from working at university. She set up a makeshift lab in her bedroom and continued with her research throughout the war.

A snapshot of the women of color in the woman’s army corps on Staten Island

This is an ongoing project of mine, and I’ll update this as much as I can (It’s not all WWII stuff, I’ve got separate folders for separate achievements).

File this under: The History I Wish I’d Been Taught As A Little Girl

Part 2

Annie Jump Cannon was an american astronomer and, in addition to possibly having one of the best names in history, was co-creator of one of the first scientific classification systems of stars, based on temperature.

Melba Roy Moutan was a Harvard educated mathematician who led a team of mathematicians at NASA, nicknamed ‘Computers’ for their number processing prowess.

Joyce Jacobson Kaufman was a chemist who developed the concept of conformational topology, and studied at Johns Hopkins University before it officially allowed women entry in 1970.

Vera Rubin is an astronomer and has co-authored 114 peer reviewed papers. She specializes in the study of dark matter and galaxy rotation rates.

Mary Sherman Morgan was a rocket scientist who invented hydyne, a liquid fuel that powered the USA’s Jupiter C-rocket.

Chien-Siung Wu was a physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, as well as experimental radioactive studies. She was the first woman to become president of the American Physical Society.

Mildred Catherine Rebstock was the first person to synthesize the antibiotic chloromycetin.

Ruby Hirose was a chemist who conducted vital research about an infant paralysis vaccine.

Hattie Elizabeth Alexander was a pediatrician and microbiologist who developed a remedy for Haemophilus influenzae, and conducted vital research on antibiotic resistance.

Marie Tharp was a scientist who mapped the floor of the Atlantic Ocean and provided proof of continental drift.

image

Mae Jamison is an astronaut who holds a degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University and was the first black woman in space.

Ada Lovelace was a mathematician and considered to be the world’s first computer programmer.

image

Patricia E Bath is ophthalmologist and the inventor of the Laserphaco Probe, which is used to treat cataracts.

image

Barbara McClintock won a Nobel prize for her discovery that genes could move in and between chromosomes.

That’s it for now, part three will be on its way. (Josephine Baker was requested in the first installment, just know I did not forget her! She’s in a different folder, titled ‘famous people you didn’t know were complete badasses, and she, along with Hedy Lamar and Audrey Hepburn will be in the next installment :) )

Part 3

Josephine Baker, though today remembered for her dancing, singing, and larger than life personality, actually played a significant role in WWII. She joined Women’s Auxiliary of the Free French Air Force, got her pilot’s license in 1933, and by 1944 she raised 3,143,000 francs for the war effort. She entertained the troops, which was a doubly whammy of justice. She refused to entertain segregated troops, so the French military was forced to integrate the troops for all her performances. She also smuggled secret messages in her music across countless borders.

image

Audrey Hepburn is known as one of the most beautiful and talent actresses of the 1950′s, but her contributions to the world started far before her first film and continued until well after her cinematic heyday. In WWII stricken Austria, Audrey, then an aspiring ballerina, would give secret ballet performances to raise money for the Austrian resistance. She even helped smuggle secret messages for the resistance. On one such occasion, she was stopped by an enemy soldier. He asked her what she was doing and she, pretending not to understand, presented him with a bouquet of wildflowers she’d been absentmindedly picking. She was let go and the message was delivered safely. It was her experience in the war which would later prompt her to become one of the founders of UNICEF.

image

Hedy Lamarr was an actress well known for her piercing gaze and deadpan wit. What she’s less known for is being a brilliant mathematician who invented the frequency hopping spread spectrum. Without her invention, we wouldn’t have bluetooth or wifi.

Ching Shih was one of the world’s most successful pirates. At the death of her (pirate) husband, the former prostitute took command of his ships and started her pirating career. At the height of her career she commanded 1800 ships and more than 80,000 male and female pirates. She became powerful enough to challenge every empire’s naval forces in the world and her Red Flag Fleet was feared from the Chinese coast to Malaysia. Unable to defeat her, the Chinese government caved and offered her amnesty. She surprised everyone by taking it and became one of the few pirates in history to retire. She also took care of her crew even after her retirement; most of Ching’s pirates were pardoned. She died a respectable millionaire.

Sophie School was an active member of the White Rose non-violent resistance group in WWII Germany. In 1943 she, along with her brother and the rest of the White Rose were arrested for passing out leaflets encouraging passive resistance. She and her brother were beheaded by guillotine just a few hours later. Her last words were “How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause. Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?”

(Written by Emporer-of-nerds) Constance Markievicz (was a) Very important figure in the Irish independence movement, first woman elected to the British House of Commons, and one of the first women to hold a cabinet position in government (Minister for Labour of the Irish Republic (which was a short-lived revolutionary state predating the current Ireland/Éire))!

image

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was an English ambassador to Turkey in the early 1700s, and documented her experience carefully. When she saw the Turkish perform an early method of small-pox vaccination, she urgently wrote home. She is responsible for the first variolation small-pox vaccinations in Europe.

image

Marie Curie is fairly well known. Unfortunately she’s often known as the ‘assistant’ to her husband. She was a pioneering physicist and chemist, who’s work with radiation was groundbreaking. She was the first woman to win a Nobel prize and the only one to win one in two fields for her discovery of polonium and uranium. It’s also notable that she was the first woman in Europe to receive a doctorate degree. Her discoveries made the x-ray machine possible, and Curie immediately put it to work. She invented a small, mobile type of x-ray machine and worked with her daughter at casualty collection points in WWI, using the machine to locate shrapnel and bullets in wounded soldiers. She died of pernicious anemia, a result of years of radioactive exposure. Many of her notebooks are still too radioactive to be read.

Margherita Hack was an Italian astrophysicist and became administrator of the Trieste Astronomical Observatory, bringing it to renowned respect and fame. She was a prolific science writer and was awarded the Targa Giuseppe Piazzi for the scientific research, and later the Cortina Ulisse Prize for scientific dissemination. Asteroid 8558 Hack, discovered in 1995, was named in her honor.

(This installment was a little all over the place as far as achievements go, and short, since it was mostly requests! Hypatia of Alexandria was also requested but she, along with Sappho and others, are getting their own installment. The next installment will center around women of the literary world!)

Great respect for this!

Note that there were many many more, both before and after photography was invented.

Don’t ever let some fuckboy tell you that women just cleaned and cooked until very recently.

So important.

WOW thank you so much for compiling these and then sharing them for the rest of us for education! I knew some of these stories but am so thankful to learn more.
