the reddit blackout is just another incident in a long desperate fight to turn the internet into the most advertiser friendly capitalistic hell hole possible.

the Tumblr porn ban and features like Tumblr live, twitters implosion, the threat of a TikTok ban, twitchs new rules restricting streamers ability to advertise, discords new changes to make it more like social media instead of the messaging app it is, YouTube's ridiculous policy restricting content and banning creators for "the children" (advertisers), literally everything meta is doing

the whole internet is forcebily losing its creativity and uniqueness and being forced into bland corporate boxes and being censored in an effort to make the rich richer

I miss the old internet where we weren't all pushed to use the same few social media sites with the same bland layout and being used to make money off of every second

neocities guide - why you should build your own html website

do you miss the charm of the 90s/00s web where sites had actual personality instead of the same minimalistic theme? are you feeling drained by social media and the constant corporate monopoly of your data and time? do you want to be excited about the internet again? try neocities!!

what is neocities?

neocities is a free hosting website that lets you build your own html website from scratch, with total creative control. in their own words: "we are tired of living in an online world where people are isolated from each other on boring, generic social networks that don't let us truly express ourselves. it's time we took back our personalities from these sterilized, lifeless, monetized, data mined, monitored addiction machines and let our creativity flourish again."

why should I make my own website?

web3 has been overtaken by capitalism & conformity. websites that once were meant to be fun online social spaces now exist solely to steal your data and sell you things. it sucks!! building a personal site is a great way to express yourself and take control of your online experience.

what would I even put on a website?

the best part about making your own site is that you can do literally whatever the hell you want! focus on a specific subject or make it a wild collection of all your interests. share your art! make a shrine for one of your interests! post a picture of every bird you see when you step outside! make a collection of your favorite blinkies! the world is your oyster !! here are some cool example sites to inspire you: recently updated neocities sites | it can be fun to just look through these and browse people's content! space bar | local interstellar dive bar creature feature | halloween & monsters big gulp supreme peanutbuttaz | personal site dragodiluna linwood | personal site patho grove | personal site

He was greeted by a featureless darkening sky, flashing light scanning overhead, and then- “…Huh?” The noise left his lips involuntarily. “Hello?” A mop of blond curls and wide hazel eyes filled his vision as the stranger’s soft voice whispered. So that’s what angels look like, Ed thought as his eyes slid shut.

When Edward Teach woke up on a remote beach, the last thing he expected was to find a strange blond man who lives alone in a lighthouse shrouded in permanent fog. Stede shows Ed the life of a solitary lighthouse keeper, while Ed tries to unravel the mystery that is Stede Bonnet.

In before I start seeing people bitching about rainbow capitalism MY favorite rainbow capitalism story is about Subaru. Yes the Japanese car company.

In the nineties, they were struggling. They were competing with a dozen other companies targeting the main demographic at the time: white men ages 18-35, especially after a failed luxury car launch with a new ad agency. “What we need is to focus on niche demographics,” they decided, and then focused on people who enjoyed the outdoors. The Subaru was excellent at driving on dirt roads that many other vehicles couldn’t at the time, so it was perfect for all those off-road campers; they started making all-wheel drive standard in all their cars to help with that. And the people who wanted cars to go do outdoor stuff? Lesbians.

Okay. Of course it wasn’t only lesbians buying Subarus. They’re on the list with educators, health-care professionals, and IT people. But the point is, this Japanese car company interviewed this strange demographic (single, female head of household) and realized one important factor: They were lesbians. They liked to be able to use the cars to go do outdoorsy stuff, and they liked that they could use the cars to haul stuff rather than a big truck or van. Subaru had a choice to make then. They had four other demographics they could market to, after all–the educators, the health-care professionals, IT professionals, and straight outdoorsy couples. Their company didn’t hinge on this one “problematic” demographic.

And they decided “fuck it,” and marketed to lesbians anyway. This included offering benefits to American gay and lesbian employees for their domestic partners, so it didn’t look like a cash grab. (This was not a problem. They already offered those in Canada.)

Yes, there was some backlash. They got letters from a grassroots group accusing them of promoting homosexuality, and every letter said they’d no longer be buying from Subaru. “You didn’t buy from us before, either,” Subaru realized, and ignored them. It helped that the team really cared about the plan, and that they had many straight allies to back them up. There was also some initial backlash when Subaru hired women to play a lesbian couple in the commercial, but they quickly found that lesbians preferred more subtlety; “XENA LVR” on a license plate, or bumper stickers with the names of popular LGBTQ+ destinations, or taglines of “Get out. Stay out.” that could be used for the outdoors–or the closet.

Subaru said “We see you. We support you.” They sponsored Pride parades and partnered with Rainbow Card and hired Martina Navratilova as spokeswoman. They put their money where their mouth is and went into it whole hog. In a time where companies did not want to take our money, Subaru said, “Why not? They’re people who drive.” And that was groundbreaking.

It wasn’t blatant, it was cheeky and pretty low key, but really really effective. It played into the “if you know you know” vibe in exactly the right way.

Oh THAT’S why lesbians love Subarus

keep seeing Temu ads on here so just to share cause idk if people are widely aware

Avatar

I was suspicious the first time I saw that "shopping like a billionaire ad" because wtaf does that even mean when it comes to suspiciously cheap prices

Temu so far, does not have these problems, it wants to be the next Amazon, so of course it’s going to sell stuff so low it’s not making a profit, does anyone realize that Uber has yet to turn a profit - Its goal is to undermine and remove traditional cab companies, then Uber plans to be in place to monopolize and raise prices.

tbh i don't really get why we divide the oceans into different oceans because they're all connected it's the same ocean

no metaphor here just pure confusion...is there a line where one ocean stops and another begins? or is it like a smooth gradient of percentages of one ocean shading into another ocean?

Yes, there is a line. There are confluences you can see and touch and they are NOT subtle in the slightest.

That's the Atlantic and the Caribbean on a particularly pronounced day.

This is the Indian and the Pacific. It's not always this obvious everywhere but the dividing lines are very much there.

Oceans have their own properties as far as temperature and salinity and unless something like a storm or a current forces them to mix they won't. Mostly this applies to vertical mixing and it gives you things like thermoclines and haloclines but water is wierd and won't mix horizontally either.

The ocean basins tend to have their own currents that go in a circle and define that ocean, and those patterns mix the water within that ocean. Like a washing machine.

The Caribbean has a little loop of its own that not on this map, but that current keeps that ocean pretty internally consistent. It's got clear warm water because of the shallow bowl of limestone sand it sits in. Where it meets the Atlantic with wildly different conditions the water is traveling in opposite directions, and it acts kind of like an oncoming lane of highway traffic. Species that have adapted to a narrow band of temperatures and salinities (most fish) can't cross, while species with a stronger homeostasis hang out there on purpose, (marine mammals, turtles, sharks). Plankton, that cannot control their horizontal movement in the water column, are held in their home territories by these barriers.

This is cool as fuck

I'm begging you, please stop italicising te reo Māori words in your fics.

There's a really excellent article by Khairani Barokka on why italicising non-English words in general is not a great idea. (tl;dr: it's very othering)

For te reo there's an additional reason, which is that most of us in Aotearoa stopped italicising te reo decades ago and now when we see it it looks fucking weird. It feels like you're holding the word with tongs; like you're saying "hey I found this weird foreign word and I don't really know what to do with it!"

Which is a pity, because there's some really good fics out there exploring Ed's Māori identity, and the italicising makes them look less good than they are. (I'm planning a specific recs post, but want it to be 100% positive, also there's stuff I haven't read yet.)

I don't want this to be a call out post, because I hate that shit, and I know that everyone's coming from a good place. If you've been italicising te reo words, you're probably doing what you were taught was the right thing, and I genuinely don't want you to feel bad about it. This is just a learning experience; go forth and use italics as they should be used in fan fiction:

"Oh. Oh."

PS I can't write about italicisation and te reo without mentioning the brilliant Alice Te Punga Somerville and the especially her poem Kupu rere kē.

The way I've already seen uncountable "Netflix is hiring!" Ads. They're really just gonna hire scabs and pretend the WGA strike isn't happening....

This is a reminder to anyone who wants to go into screenwriting. This is not an opportunity to get your foot in the door. Do not take any writing jobs during the strike. This includes freelance or “script editing” jobs.

You will be a scab. Scabs are barred from union membership. By crossing the picket line to get your foot in the door you’ll be burning one of the most important bridges in your life. You will actively be harming your future job prospects.

This strike will end one day. Those writers who are out picketing will reenter the writers room and start producing work with the legal and financial protections and guarantees they’re fighting for, and you will not be among their ranks. You will be a scab. A traitor.

A lack of union membership will harm your prospects job wise. Do not scab. Knowledge of your scabbing, traitorous ways will cost you your ability to make friends in the industry. Do not scab. Support the WGA as they fight for your rights. Do. Not. Scab.

This is your periodic reminder: scabs get stabs 🔪

Don’t know the details, but honey, if they didn’t like you before, this interview isn’t going to help.

I have seen the second homers come into my lake community and ruin it and push people out and take control of the HOA and try to turn this place into Disney Celebration Village II and now with this air bnb crap where it's even easier to monetize these second homes it's gotten ten times worse. These locusts come in try ban certain colors of houses, and work vans, and at home businesses, and police peoples yards, and mandate any farm equipment must be barn/garage kept and out of sight from the road and this and that and this other thing. They get up at HOA meetings and read reviews of renters and try to pass ordinances to prevent whatever the air bnber complained about. Like no mowing your grass in your bathing suit and only being able to mow or run power equipment certain hours of the day and only on week days. And these air bnb assholes complain about everything like this was some resort and everybody that lives here is like there for their entertainment or convenience. Right now our HOA meetings are like some country about to devolve into civil war. We have factions and caucuses. If you air bnb I hate you as much as the people you rent from.

That's not even half of what's going on here in Britain (where the story is from), and not just because HOAs aren't a thing here.

Firstly, as you will note lots of these people aren't even buying homes to live in, they're buying houses for them to spend the holidays in and leave empty the rest of the year (making AirBnB arguably an improvement in this regard). Secondly, because these people are generally wealthier Londoners/Home Counties types, they can afford the higher prices that result from the high demand for houses in these areas, pricing the locals out of the market. Thirdly, the parts of the country which are most in demand for these kinds of properties also happen to be among the ones with the strongest regional/ethnolinguistic identities (Cumbria, North Yorkshire, Cornwall and the Southeast, Wales, and Western Scotland), thus the pressure on housing stock threatens the actual viability of these communities, and in the case of Welsh and Gaelic only further endangers these languages (and both communities are keenly aware of this fact). It's not just 'people coming in and making life difficult', it's 'people who aren't even around making it impossivle for you to live where you grew up'.
