Grad Assist Reflection

For the Grad Assist project, I (along with Trizha) was assigned to Ola Anzorge to help her with her final film. I created a couple backgrounds and assisted with colouring some shots.

Working with a 3rd year student allowed me to gain a new understanding of methods and techniques that I was not otherwise all too familiar with. The software I utilise most is Moho, which is a vector based program. The method I typically use for animation is essentially creating and rigging a "puppet" or "2D model" and animating my characters that way. However, Ola animates on TV Paint using the frame-by-frame method which contrasts heavily to what I am used to. At first I felt intimidated by this, but later thought that it would be an interesting challenge to overcome.

Whilst I didn't actually animate anything, I still helped with the colouring part of the process. I rather enjoyed bringing colour to the character animations, though my eyes and hands did get tired after a few hours of working non-stop. In addition, even though I was already aware, I found out just how time consuming frame-by-frame animation was, which increased my admiration for the technique.

As well as that, I also created a couple backgrounds. The most difficult part of this for me was trying to replicate the style of Trizha's backgrounds. I felt as though the shading and textures that I used weren't quite right and it did not really look as similar to Trizha's as I would have liked it to.

250 Word Reflection

Upon reading the briefs for this project, I was thrilled and excited as it was primarily about character animation. This included designing and conceptualising, which I believe to be one of my strong points, so I was really eager to start.

I had really enjoyed the first two briefs, Dot and Shape. This was because it limited me in terms of character design, but it had really propelled me in terms of animating. Instead of thinking of how the specific character looks, these two briefs made me focus on and carefully consider what actions and movements would really capture personality and emotion.

The third brief, Elements, allowed me to have a lot more creative freedom. I was happy with the outcome of my character design as I feel like it had perfectly portrayed the description of her persona. I also felt that it worked well with the background design. I began to find issues when animating. I struggled to animate the character walking because there was a specific way that it needed to look and I was not able to achieve that. However next time, I would need to look at more references of models on a catwalk.

In comparison to previous work, I had struggled a lot with the last brief, Past Present Future. This was because it was my first time collaborating with others. There was a huge lack of communication with one member of my group, which had slowed us all down as we were waiting on eachother’s parts. I also feel like we had an interesting topic, but the execution of our ideas was not done to the best of our abilities. Taking on all the feedback I was given, I need to ensure I include a lot more exageration and emotion, whilst letting go of being too realistic and literal.
