you can have a fresh start anytime. you can start again every day. every hour if you need! you’re allowed to put the past behind you.

There's out there a place for you. A place to be yourself, a place where you belong. A place where you'll feel wanted, where you are welcome. A place that will make you feel safe, at home.

And I know you'll find it soon.

“Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep, really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”

“Is it really so difficult to do what must be done? It’s not difficult at all, when you stop fighting against it. One little step will get you started, and once you’re started, you become interested and invested. Once you’re started, momentum begins to give you a push that becomes stronger with each effort. Instead of putting off what you know must be done, what if you could somehow get yourself to be positively enthusiastic about it? You absolutely can, because you can choose how you wish to feel about anything. The genuine satisfaction in your life comes when you know you’re making a difference. And whatever it is in your world that must be done is your opportunity to make that difference. Go beyond intending, go beyond planning, go beyond wishing, and go beyond saying you need to get it done. Dive in, go to work, make something happen and be the positive, dynamic difference that makes you feel alive.”

Self care isn’t just drinking water and going to sleep early. Self care is taking a break when things become overwhelming, saying no to things you do not want to do, allowing yourself to cry, asking for help from those around you, doing things that make you happy.

nobody is irrelevant. nobody is invisible. your neighbors know your name and see you set off to school or work or the backyard everyday, sometimes with a spring in your step and sometimes with hunched over shoulders. there was this one time some stranger pointed you out to their friends and said “that’s the haircut I want” or “I have that shirt, too” or “they go to my school”. someone has admired the way you carry yourself or gave a presentation or even the way you’re so polite when you first meet a person. you’ve made comments or jokes that have stuck in minds of overhearers and eavesdroppers. when old classmates of yours think back to kindergarten or fourth grade or sophomore year they remember you and have an opinion of you. you’ve made recommendations of songs and restaurants and even cookie brands and actually introduced people to their all-time favorites. the cashier at the grocery store knows exactly what laundry detergent your household uses, or even if you don’t do your laundry at all.

you can never be irrelevant. there’s pieces of you everywhere, in a dozen lives, in a hundred dreams, in a million memories. maybe it’s true that you don’t have any friends, and you have a sucky relationship with your family or no family at all and no-one ever checks up on you, and you’re really very lonely, but that doesn’t determine your worth. you do. and so do the billions of small attributions you’ve already made to the world, both long-term and short-term. so thank you.

right now you might be in a situation that you think you won’t survive but six months ago you were in a situation that you didn’t think you’d survive and two years before that you were in a situation you didn’t think you’d survive and the point is you will always surprise yourself and you will always make it through

“It is quite unbelievable that there will be people that I will love unconditionally that I have not even met yet. Somewhere out there, in a supermarket or singing in the shower, there are souls that have not touched mine yet but will, eventually.”

I got this idea from a recovering addict, but it kinda helps with non-linear healing from other problems.

But the idea is like to not use day streaks but instead use percentages. “I did x bad thing 100% of the time before, now I do it 70% of the time” You can see your improvement and it’s more encouraging than having a day streak you constantly break.

Unless you wanna use that streak as like a high score. Idk, that might help. But the idea is to try to not feel like you’re starting over from the beginning because it will make you want to give up.

And you can do it in reverse too. You can go from doing a positive thing 0% of the time to 40% of the time. And you may like not be getting past a day or two streak of doing it, but you’ve still made a ton of progress.

You can go from 100% to 50% or 0% to 50% and never get past a one day streak. But that 50% change is massive.

thinking about “you haven’t met all the people who will love you” and like!!! you also haven’t found all the things that will make you happy!!!! there will always be new authors and musicians and artists whose work you will one day discover and love!!!! there will always be new hobbies and skills for you to learn and feel fulfilled by!!! there will always be new things around the corner that will bring sudden and unexpected happiness!!!!!!!!!!!

five recipes for an exciting life (in my opinion)

  1. spending enough time creating things with your hands (baking, drawing, scrapbooking, doodling, crocheting, journaling and so on)
  2. keeping track of things like pretty skies, milestones, happy memories, appointments you're looking forward to
  3. listening to music that genuinely makes you feel happy and energetic
  4. making a habit of reaching out to people in a way that's comfortable to you (i send my dad songs he might like, my friend sends me monthly life updates)
  5. being kind to all your five senses → like investing in a scented candle or essential oil dispenser or body mist, having a soft blanket or socks (or a soft animal to pet), listening to birdsong or the rain, looking at the sky more often, and having your favorite foods enough times

After a hard season, it can be difficult to go back to yourself, back to a routine. And that's okay. You don't have to rush, don't need to have everything figured out. You can start as small as getting enough sleep. Cleaning your room. Taking care of your personal hygiene. A tiny bit of progress is better than no progress at all.

Its okay if you're not who you thought you would be, take all the time to grieve the person you tried so hard to become when you wanted to better yourself and learn from your past mistakes. But its also okay to just love the person you are now and learn to get to know that person better. There is no shame in being who you are, even if you still have a lot to learn. You don't always have to upgrade yourself, sometimes there is peace in appreciating who you are and what you have right now.

Be the person your teenage self wanted and needed in their life.

You may not be able to change the past but there will be a kid out there screaming to know people like you exist.
