Can you imagine how good of a husband Ron Weasley would be? How good of a father? I’m just imagining Ron and Hermione’s marriage and how powerful and amazing it would be.
I spent quarantine reading the books for the first time since age 10, and one of my favorite discoveries was how completely and staunchly loyal and protective Ron is, especially when it comes to Hermione. Even when they are mad at each other, he is unending in his efforts to protect her and often makes efforts to take burdens off of her shoulders (i.e. taking over the research work for Buckbeak’s appeal when she is overwhelmed by homework in POA). He is her fiercest and staunchest defender almost from day 1, putting his own safety and happiness on the line to keep her safe without hesitation (i.e. swearing that he’ll claim her as his cousin and teach her his family tree so that she is not put on the Muggleborn Registry; literally begging Bellatrix to torture him instead of her.)
And I’m imagining this translating to their post-war life and their marriage. Hermione coming home from a long day at the ministry and exhausted and Ron already having dinner made and all of the kids bathed. Ron making her lunch to take to the office on days she’s dreading and including little love notes; making her tea and making her comfortable and just being with her on nights when she is stuck doing paperwork. Being completely overprotective when she’s pregnant.
(This DEFINITELY includes the fact that Ron leaves his job as an Auror to run the joke shop with George and you CANNOT convince me that that had nothing to do with he and Hermione starting a family)
And then there’s Hermione, who keeps Ron grounded, who stops him from getting so protective that he gets himself in trouble. We see this multiple times throughout the series, where she has to hold him back from attacking Malfoy in her defense. And I see this translating perfectly over to their marriage as well.
Having to stop him from going too far/getting himself arrested when Rose is being bullied (but also finding the more discreet ways to help him give those kids hell.) Coming home after yet another long day at the office and finding that Ron’s had just as long a day, and that the kids are running around the house screaming, and he sees her and laments that he hasn’t made dinner yet and she just kisses him on the head and goes out to get a pizza (do Wizards do take out? Whatever they do now.)
In general, the two of them understand each other better than anyone else (like in Goblet of Fire when Hermione is able to explain to Harry exactly why Ron is angry.) They always turn to each other for comfort and protect each other undyingly, so of course this would translate into their marriage.
In my mind, Ron and Hermione’s marriage is one built on mutual love, respect, friendship and trust, because they had so many shortcomings before that they worked so long and hard to grow from. It’s sharing all of their responsibilities and burdens so that neither one of them is overwhelmed. Its promising to always be completely honest with one another, no matter what. It’s playful bickering that evolves into laughing and kissing, and actual arguments that evolve into holding each other close and whispering I’m sorry.
It’s nights spent cuddling on the couch, Hermione laying her head in Ron’s lap and reading and him just watching her and thinking about how lucky he feels. It’s waking up in the middle of the night and holding each other to help each other through the nightmares. It’s building a happy home, full of learning and joking and reading and Quidditch-playing, a place where happiness overflows and their children always know, more than anything, that they are loved, and that they have someone behind them.
Every piece of evidence in these books about Ron and Hermione’s friendship and eventual romance suggests that they would have nothing less than the epitome of a healthy marriage based on love and trust and J.K. Rowling can fight me on that any day.

The day is a blur. She’s barely slept, except for a few broken hours earlier in Ron’s arms. Harry slept soundly, and Hermione slowly untangled herself from Ron, leaving the dormitory quietly while the boys still snored.
The bathroom is totally empty, and she’s not surprised. Most people have left, or if not they are still downstairs helping clean up. She slowly unpeeled the ripped and filthy clothes from her body, flinching slightly at every scrape and cut she grazed. The hot water stung her skin at first, but it felt too good to shut it off. She cleaned herself up, washed her hair and climbed out 20 minutes later feeling cleaner than she has in a year.
She slowly made her way around the castle, feeling a weird sense of detachment. It’s still in ruins, blood and mess and destruction around every corner. It still doesn’t feel real. Somehow, subconsciously probably, she ended up at the library. It’s surprisingly still put together, save for the smashed windows and a few books that had fallen from the shelves in the commotion. It’s quiet. Deadly silent. It felt welcoming after everything that had happened.
Hermione begun to move around the library, picking up books and replacing them back on the shelves. Her fingers graze the spines and the lump in her throat returns. She missed this place. Her solitude. She missed being here, learning and listening.
‘How did I know I’d find you here?’
She was sitting on the ledge near one of the windows still intact. Hidden away, between stacks of books. She had one open on her lap. She looked up, the smallest trace of a smile on her lips.
‘I’m nothing if not predictable.’
Ron did not respond, instead moved closer, looking around. He sat next to her, his eyes still scanning the space.
‘I missed this place.’
She laughed. It feels so strange.
He pretended to look offended. ‘What?’
Still smiling, she looked at him. ‘I never took you for being a really big fan of the library.’
‘Nah,’ he said, ‘but I missed watching you study.’
Hermione stared at him. She smiled slowly, feeling the heat rising on her cheeks. ‘And I missed doing your homework for you.’
He grinned and bumped her shoulder with his. There was so much to say, so much that had been building up for years. Finally, time was on their side. Her throat burned again, and tears stung her eyes. She leant over and took his hand, squeezing it. She loved him so much. She honestly couldn’t believe they had survived.
Ron turned slightly when she sniffed and his free hand came up to rest lightly on her cheek. The tears fell then and he brushed them away.
‘I don’t know where to start.’
She saw him swallow and lean forward.
‘We’ve got time.’
She looked at him, really looked at him. His face soft, dirt still smeared on his face. There were a few cuts and grazes on his face, his arms. But he was intact. He was alive. They both were. Her heart pounded in her chest.
‘Can you please kiss me now?’
She saw him smile before he kissed her, his hand moving from her cheek into her hair. Her hands moved up, gripping his shirt as she pushed herself firmly against him, needing to be as close as possible. She opened her mouth and a soft moan escaped her lips as his hand came up to rest on her thigh.
Finally, too quickly, they broke away. Their foreheads together, breathing ragged and meshed, lips red.
‘We’ve got time,’ she whispered, closing her eyes and letting that thought truly sink in.
It felt real now.
