this place has a brunch menu where everything’s named after this summer’s movies. so you got stuff like “indiana jones and the mango french toast of destiny” or my favorite:
Have you REALLY lost your scissors if you aren't walking around making scissor motions with your fingers in an attempt to lure them back out?

this is a beautiful addition
guy who forgets the word prophylactic and so uses the word apotropaic instead
*history textbook voice*: "In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, it was common for people to affix an apotropaic amulet, made of a thin sheet of latex, to the penis in order to ward off the misfortune of pregnancy."
GUY WHO JUST FOUND OUT THE WORD PROPHYLACTIC HAS AN ADDITIONAL MEANING IN NORTH AMERICAN ENGLISH THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE IN BRITISH ENGLISH ??????
BeastQuake (Taylor's Version)
Last night, there was a Taylor Swift concert in the big football stadium in Seattle. That stadium is notable primarily because there's a seismometer located just across the street. I decided to check it out and see if there was a signal from the concert, and yep, there definitely was.
What's extra fascinating to me here is that it appears that there may be identifiable songs in this seismometer trace. There are some sections with repeating patterns, like a chorus and bridge, lasting for 3-5 minutes. I wonder if the higher resolution trace would be able to pick up all the way down to each word in some parts. I can probably dig up a better graph for specific time periods if someone has a timestamped set list and is curious about a particular song.
(Some notes on the graph: Each line may be scaled differently, leading to the appearance of quiet lines vs. loud lines. There are other sources of seismic noise in this trace, the station is near an active train line and a highway and roads that get a lot of truck traffic, and the building itself may have an A/C unit that periodically turns on and off.)
Here are the other components:
Oh yeah, this is definitely a song.
I ran it through some processing and it's definitely music. I'm not a Swiftie so I have NO IDEA what this is, but it's music.
It's also very quiet and very low fidelity (It was transmitted through the ground, across the street, and recorded by a seismometer, after all), so this may be the absolute worst quality concert bootleg possible.
raavenb2619 This is very cool. How did you make the audio? I’m guessing export the seismology data and import as raw data in audacity? What’s the sample rate of the seismology data?
Tried that at first, but it didn't work out. I didn't dive into the data format too deeply, but whatever it is, it wasn't something that worked with my first few import attempts.
Instead, I used a tool called "sac2wav", which is something specifically designed for this purpose. Of course, it's trying to make inaudible frequencies audible, so it speeds things waaaaay up, which meant I had to slow them waaaaaay down.
The original sample rate of that station is 200 hz, so there would barely be any of the music left even if you recorded it on the stage, let alone across the street in a basement. On the plus side, lower frequencies travel better than higher ones, and seismometers are designed to pick up low frequencies, so it probably did a good job of picking up what did make it across the street and into the basement. It's likely this wasn't even audible where the station was.
A Surrey family is horrified their 13-year-old son, who is on the autism spectrum, was punched in the face by a middle-aged man and police are not pursuing the case further.
It happened last Monday morning at the food court at Central City Shopping Centre in Surrey, B.C.
The boy’s mother is outraged.
“A 200-pound adult punched my kid, who is barely 70 pounds,” said Yanyan Yao.

Yanyan Yao started an online petition for her son, Howie, to get a proper investigation done and to spread awareness. It hasn’t reached its goal yet.
He’s a child who got traumatized for trying to communicate. Please rb this.
So there was a french animated film about the friendship between Icarus and the Minotaur last year and I was supposed to hear about it on the bird app?
I mean it’s literally not streaming anywhere yet nor does it have a home media release at this time but I would like to get hyped in hopes of one of those things happening eventually.
It has a good style! I would like to see the tragedy!
Damn, missed it again

Transphobes aren't attacking bathrooms randomly. It's not about protecting women and children, it's about preventing trans people from participating in public life.
Access to toilet facilities are essential to being able to participate in public life.
It's why society was so reluctant to introduce public bathrooms for women, because before that all public bathrooms were for men only.
It's why society was so reluctant to desegregate toilets for Black people.
It's why society was and is so reluctant to create disability-accessible bathroom stalls.
If a person can't access a toilet, then it's extremely difficult to impossible for them to participate in society.
So, the best way to exclude a group of people from society without putting up a literal sign saying "x group of people not allowed" is to prevent them from accessing the bathroom.
mistakes are so normal and human and inevitable and necessary and real. if i make one however please put me to death
That was somebody's mom whose dream had always been to be a restaurant owner but sadly she married into the mafia and she was like the mom of someone important and moms are like the one authority italians recognise so when she put her foot down and said "NO. We are going to make them great food and give them the most lovely evening!" Nobody dared disagree and thanks to op she got to live her dream for a night she probably remembers them as fondly as they remember her
The aliens are gonna be so confused when humans first board their ships and start doing this, and by GOD I hope at least one of them is going to have a camera when it happens.
“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
An actual World Heritage Post
how does this post not have a million notes but anyone online can quote it
one week until ten years of Spiders Georg
No offense but the internet gives you the most wrong and fucked up idea of helping people because people get mad if you don't care about disasters happening in 72 countries, meanwhile the people in real life that are doing the most good picked one VERY SPECIFIC thing to care about and care about it REALLY HARD
Walks up to a guy working on restoring a native tree species to his downtown "why aren't you posting about grasses in Turkmenistan!"
The internet has taken a whole generation of bright, motivated, passionate young people who care and have big hearts and turned them into paralyzed, shattered wrecks too crushed by the weight of the world's pain to hand a pair of socks to a person in need
