Do you write music with the view of being politically active and delivering a message or does it just happen and the rest follows?
Friendly reminder that Hozier’s first music video, in 2013, involved him literally taking his life savings and using it to make a protest video about anti-gay actions in Chechnya. This was not a popular position at the time, to the point that damn near every interviewer asked “so, are you gay?” because they literally could not figure out why he cared so much.
Incidentally, after the first few times of saying “no, I’m straight but it’s important,” he started saying “you can think that if you want.” ALSO not a popular position at the time. Adam Lambert’s entire career had been derailed only four years before because he dared to be openly gay and sexual about it.
He literally came out swinging like Muhammad Ali and has not stopped. And he finds it odd that people find it odd! Like he was asked if he was aware of his “lesbian cult following” and seemed genuinely puzzled why he has a lesbian cult following (and, later, just a massive queer following in general) and it’s like. Honey. You loved us first. You loved us more and harder than most people were willing to. When it was unpopular to even whisper about how maybe queer people shouldn’t be seen as inhuman actually, you grabbed a megaphone and screamed. You risked not just losing a career, but never having one at all, to stand by us. You loved us. We’re just loving you back.
I got so wound up writing how much I agreed, @prismatic-bell, and mentioning enough events that were happening in 2013, that it occurred to me that some of y'all poking around in Tumblr might not remember 2013 too well, what with it being ten years ago. I’m gonna assume that those of you who were under about nine or ten at the time might not remember it viscerally, so I’m linking a bunch of things I mention for further reading if you weren’t living in it as a queer person. (Also if you weren’t raised rather intensely as an Irish-American person and aren’t viscerally familiar with that context, I’m adding some links on that too.)
It’s worth noting that “Take Me to Church” was popularized in a viral video of ballet dancer Sergei Polunin interpreting the lyrics (as directed by David LaChapelle). That routine is–“gay and sexual about it” is a really good phrase, especially since Polunin is performing in a pair of tights the same color of his skin, a dance belt, and absolutely nothing else. The choreography emphasized the vulnerability of the lyrics, the importance of sex and love, the pain inflicted by marginalization and homophobia, and the transcendence of queer affirmation among ourselves. I remember it being almost impossible to avoid that video, although I never did–I watched it over and over, transfixed, for weeks. And the thing about that routine is that it draws a lot of its strength from using the dancer to highlight the emotional punches in the lyrics, so you can hardly avoid listening to the lyrics and processing what they mean.
Those lyrics were also unapologetically unflinching in dissecting the pain and ambivalence inflicted by chronic, pervasive homophobia–especially through the Catholic Church. The man is Irish. The Catholic Church is his local religious and moral authority, and it carries a weight there that it does not have in the US. Even writing 20 years after Sinead O’ Connor (may her memory be a blessing) famously tore up a photo of the Pope on Saturday Night Live in 1992 to protest Church abuses, the Catholic church casts a long shadow over Ireland. It’s all bound up in nationalism and resistance and culture and centuries of English occupation and poverty and the Church providing many social services in times when no one else would, and then using that position to commit atrocities it then immediately tried to deny. (It has taken as much as 20 years to even get an apology.) And of course Ireland was on the front of the wave uncovering abuse within the Church; the Magdalene Laundries had been Found Out starting in 1993, and that particular vein of anger smoldered for a long time on top of the sexual abuse. (There’s a Joni Mitchell song about that one, even, the world was watching Ireland so closely in those days.) I don’t think there’s a nation in the world that is as keenly critical of the Catholic Church as Ireland; it and the US are still the only nations that have dedicated formal governmental inquests into priestly abuses, and quite a few of the dioceses involved in the US were parts of the Irish-American diaspora.
Besides the Catholic Church at the time was directly opposing LGBTQ rights everywhere. Just five years earlier in 2008 the Church and the Knights of Columbus had donated a massive amount to the campaign for California’s Prop 8, which banned gay marriage in California–an outcome that felt, at the time, like a blow. If you couldn’t keep gay marriage from being explicitly banned in California, what hope was there for anywhere? So Hozier is really staring down that legacy when he’s writing these lyrics–and, importantly, he’s not focusing on the powderkeg image of the closeted gay priest who molests little boys to express his sexuality. That was pretty much the only context in which gay Catholicism was getting discussed anywhere I could see in 2013. Sure and away that shit wrought so much harm but no one was talking about the chronic damage that comes from being told that you’re inherently unclean and sordid.
My lover’s the giggle at a funeral. We were born sick–you heard them say it.
I mean, I met a dude in 2012, when we were all freshmen in college, who told me that because of his strong Catholic faith and his gayness, he had chosen to reconcile that by . And in some circles that was progressive at the time. The best I was seeing from mainstream Catholic theology was that gays could frame themselves as a lay person called to celibacy while also being openly gay, just as long as they never engaged in any kind of sexual activity with anyone. After all, sex was only acceptable within the bounds of marriage, and that sacrament wasn’t open to the gays, so your options were real limited if you wanted to obey the rules. In a very real sense, you were formally treated as if you were an unfortunate perversion of healthy sexuality which you could only make the best of by inventing a celibate calling.
So it is intensely, intensely meaningful that Hozier takes this whole framework of context and association and marginalization and transcends it into a viciously, sickly joyful piece of art that frames queer expression as holiness and the Church as an agent of sickness, of hunger, of pain. He is unsparing in the text as he equates his lover with holiness and ecstasy and life (only then I am human / only then I am clean; I was born sick / but I love it) and the church’s teachings with slow poison (a little poison each week), rejection (my church offers me no absolution), and the dull pain of internalized shame.
Offer me that deathless death, o good god! Let me give you my life! Command me to be well!
Again, of course we queers love you, man. We were introduced to you by the lyrics of a piece of art directed towards our very souls, affirming the life-giving connections offered by queer community (through the heavily implied metaphor of sex with the narrator’s lover) as wholly human. You started out by emphasizing how much that background radiation can hurt. Your first masterpiece sensation, which brought us to know you, was a delicately crafted powerhouse of validation and joy in a shared, bitter history. It is pain twisted into defiance, loneliness turned into a bond.
No fucking shit that was not a popular sentiment at the time. I was completely stunned and astonished when DOMA went down in 2013 with Windsor–it felt wholly surreal, especially as I’d been in Georgia and Texas where you were lucky if legislation didn’t go out of its way to kick you in the nuts on its way by. Kids, “Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell” fic was almost a subgenre in the enormous Stargate: Atlantis fandom at that time; when DADT went down in 2011 as it was winding down, people wrote whole fests specifically considering the characters processing the transition and coming to terms with what it meant.
DADT meant that almost all serving military members who were queer* had to remain at least publicly in the closet, and that if they were found to have been too publicly out–well, they could and often were drummed out of the service for it and lost their careers over it. Again, DADT came down in 2011. You’d get discharged and not honorably, which means you lose all your benefits and employers can see that and wonder why for the rest of your life. It was not fucking great, especially for women–there is an enormous lesbian/bi culture among women in service–but it was still slightly better than before, inasmuch as they were no longer allowed to trigger investigations to drum you out on suspicion of homosexuality just for being inconvenient or too suspiciously gender nonconforming for whatever piece of shit decided they didn’t like the look of your face. And that was seen as like, a little outdated, but not the perversion against human rights it feels like today.
Two years before. I think this came down right after Windsor hit the pike. What a year that was. Remember the brief period of heady joy after Obergefell, before Pulse, when we felt for a moment that we were marching along a path to queer acceptance across even and clear ground, and the world was on an uncomplicatedly positive trajectory? Remember optimism? But of course we all had the scars. No one casts off that much explicit shame from our communities that quickly.
In this, one of the great flowerings of transphobia as a moral panic, rising out of previous moral panics centered on homosexuality and gender conformation, it’s easy to lose hope and worry that there is no way out. Remembering the visceral context as recently as ten years ago, and considering how much of the landscape has changed, is a useful reality check. We made huge strides back last time, and we’ll do it again.
*you actually could be openly trans if you were straight, and there were definitely at least a few openly trans straight women out there exploiting that loophole in protest over the homophobia inherent in the law. My, how times have changed.
So I thought this was commonly known internet navigation (but apparently it might just be those of us who have been using the internet since the 90’s who still know it). Or so it seems based on… a grumpy comment I got.
When you see an arrow like this:
It means you click it to expand out a hidden section.
It’s an accordion section/menu! It’s useful in web design to hide information that may be overwhelming under specific headers so people can only see what they need.
Here I’m using it for people who need the content warnings to be able to check, but for those who don’t need them and don’t want to be spoiled to just move right past without accidentally reading anything.
It’s still the user’s responsibility to click the arrow and read things as they need! But it is all warned. (And, yes, the all encompassing issues are already a tag on the fic, I’m just providing additonal warnings per chapter.)
Ah, sorry yes! For those who want the html, it’s the details and summary tags!
why are people even questioning obesity in america
why is your tea liquidised?
….. Where exactly do you live that the tea isn’t liquid?!?
ENGLAND. WHERE IT IS IN A BAG AND YOU MAKE IT YOURSELF.

like what do you do with already liquid tea? Microwave it?
No it’s sweet tea you drink it cold
WHO DRINKS COLD TEA???
HAVE YOU NEVER HAD ICED/SWEET TEA BEFORE?!?
so i reblogged this from a british person and i’ve been laughing at their tags for 600 years
England, you stole tea from China. You’ve had it a mere 4 centuries compared to their 30+. Don’t play like you’re some kind of authority.
[skeletons ooh-ing]
Shots fired. World War Tea has officially begun.
Englad doesn’t own anything
except that time we owned most of the world

If I stop reblogging this, I’ve gone to the other side.
I have only seen this legendary post in screenshots, so today is a blessed day.
HAH
BOSTON TEA PARTY PART 2
HOLY HELL I FOUND IT
And this is why I love Tumblr
Drinking cold tea is like drinking cold hot chocolate. Sure, you *can* do it, but you *really shouldn’t*
Behold concerned Brit. Chocolate Milk
I only see this on pinterest omg….
OMFG
BEHOLD THE GREATEST TUMBLR POST
“world war tea” is the best play on words i’ve heard in weeks
this post is a wild ride from start to finish
I haven’t seen this since chocolate milk was added. Is that really just an American thing? You’re missing out guys!
😂😂😂
Cold tea
Cold hot chocolate aka chocolate milk
Cold coffee
I mean, do yall even know about cold water or is that an American thing too???
YOU GUYS DRINK COFFEE COLD AS WELL???
Does the rest of the world not use ice cubes? Do y'all not have freezers? What is going on?
Just thought I’d put my 2 cents in this post, it’s iced tea and not sweet tea. Idk what Americans r smoking 💀
I’m relatively new to Tumblr but it seems like sort of a big deal that I found this post so I’m gonna reblog
Imagine not liking iced tea- actually im gonna go drink some now
I don’t even know what to say…
i drink iced tea every day >:)
Iced tea is brilliant but hot tea is nice too
Behold concerned Brit
World War Tea Situation
This post is a relic
Me seeing this for the 14th time in my 5 years on tumblr and seeing more notes and comments but still reblogging it since it’s literally a World Heritage Post
date of origin: November 5th, 2013
The legend has crossed my dash.
Sometimes Brits forget that a massive portion of America has A LOT OF HEAT. There is no question if you live in the south you need cold drinks, and I know the weather is getting hotter over there too- maybe try the iced tea my good dudes.
If I’m remembering my geographic minutiae correctly, I’m pretty sure that even the northern-most latitude of the continental United States is still further south than the southern-most latitude of the United Kingdom.
Okay but back to the original comment - these things are meant for groups. It’s not (usually) one person eating like a hundred nuggets and a gallon of sweet tea. It’s catering.
If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would
“Please oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you don’t you’re evil!”
Freeloader Comin’ through!
We didn’t start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).
And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with ‘please turn off adblock’ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure they’re not installing malware.
Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is “freeloading” is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isn’t freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isn’t cheating the tv network.
Ok y’all, I work as a web developer and I’m here to tell you that you are 100% right and that it’s shit. SO I’m going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if you’re using an adblocker.
Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short it’s a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:
Oh no! I’m blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the “inspect” feature
Click the three dots in the top right and open the “Settings” Menu
And then scrolled down to “Debugger” and checked the “Disable Javascript Option”
And then just refreshed the page
Reblogging to save my life
saving a life
It would be a shame if all my mutuals reblogged this and spread it like wildfire. 👀👀👀
Isekai with male protags: “I was a loser on earth but now I’m super fucking strong and gettin mad bitches”
Isekai with female protags:
- Reincarnated princess uses earth knowledge to make magitech a thing and romances sad girl
- Girl romantically pursues her video game waifu
- Girl is tasked to teach actual fucking gods to be more empathetic to humans
- Woman reincarnated as the daughter of a magic item crafter uses earth knowledge to advance her trade
- “Straight” girl is sucked into a world with zero men and lesbians everywhere and finds out she’s sapphic (there’s like actual plot but the gay is what matters…. to me)
- A ghibli film. Need I say more
- Woman reincarnated in video game as doomed villainess desperately tries to change her story
- Girl reincarnated as a tiny baby spider kills monsters to level up
- Like the male protag one but the lame guy’s mom got isekaid with him and she’s the op one.
- Two normal girls fight urban legends in terrifying danger dimension
Right, should have thought of that.
In order:
- The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady (Light novel, manga, an anime has also just barely started)
- I’m in Love With the Villainess (Light novel, manga, an anime has been announced)
- Kamigami No Asobi (Anime, manga and visual novel)
- Magic Artisan Dahlia Wilts No More (Manga)
- The Whole of Humanity Has Gone Yuri Except for Me (manga)
- Spirited Away (anime movie)
- My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! (Light novel, manga, anime,)
- So I’m a Spider So What (Light novel, manga, anime)
- Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks? (Light novel, manga, anime)
- Otherside Picnic (Light novels, manga, anime)
I’m annoyed by what SAO did to isekai again so here’s some more
- Girl in fantasy world responsible for executing dangerous isekaid kids falls in love with an isekaid girl who cannot die (The Executioner and Her Way of Life)
- Girl who has never played a video game before builds a terrible character in full-dive VR game but accidentally exploits game loopholes to become unstoppable (Bofuri)
- Fucking Inuyasha
- Adorable bookworm is reincarnated as a commoner in a world where books are extremely rare and decides to make books accessible for everyone (Ascendance of a Bookworm)
If you’d consider Korean isekai, there’s even more variety!
This chart is several years old and I’ve been in and out of the girlsekai community so I don’t have the freshest recs, but some others:
- What if you isekaied. What if you kept isekaing. What if you kept isekaiing the same exact year, as the same exact person, trapped in the same plot that would murder you (often brutally) on the exact same day? At some point you’d have to become a serial killer, right? Resetting Lady = Finally someone makes a girlsekai horror story
- What if (the above) except it was a silly comedy? If You Lay A Hand On My Brother, You’re All Dead
- Some moony-eyed girl keeps dying during a zombie apocalypse and initially thinks it’s some divine test of her devotion to her man. Except honestly. Is he worth this. Do I know this guy enough to warrant the trauma I’ve woken up to a thousand times. Survive Romance is shockingly more about friendship than anything
- The first few chapters of My Mom Entered a Contract Marriage - you are the abused daughter of a fallen villainess - once the hottest royal bitch in the kingdom, she’s now a commoner, an alcoholic, and extremely bitter. One day she wakes you up, screaming that she’s burning. She’s shocked you’re alive, sobbing and begging your forgiveness. Tbh this is one that’s more fun if you’ve read a lot of princess isekais, because fans will totally pick up on what happened, but her child cannot. Visual treat, I stopped reading because I don’t trust artists like this to last long. But what a starter it was!
- The Holy Grail of Eris - we need more Scarlet Castiels. Look at me when I talk to you, I don’t care if you don’t like me type princess. If only she could possess us all
you’re my friend now. you’re my friend now. DID YA HEAR ME?! you’re my friend now.
Why do my interests in canning, couponing, and homesteading overlap so often with blogs with titles like ‘The Obedient Housewife’?
Like, I’m like, “I want to learn to make soap and farm,” and suddenly I see 500 “traditional family” motherfuckers like no you are mistaken. I am just a simple lesbian anticapitalist looking to limit my consumerism as much as possible.
‘these fun crafts will keep your kids occupied until your husband gets home!’ no i want a clothespin crown for me
As a nerd who homesteads, let me share the data I have gathered!
First is my megalist of homesteading-related links I’ve gathered over the years. I’m a mod over at r/homesteading and this is where I’ve put a lot of good sources (not all, admittedly some are still sitting in my bookmark folder waiting to be added). The search function at reddit is wretched, but there’s also been lots of good things I’ve shared there too. Please note that many of these sources are not actual webpages, but PDFs. That’s not an accident, PDFs are where you find the really good in-depth stuff.
Many of my sources are from the Extension Service. They won’t try to relate to you based on your lifestyle or sexual identity or religion or whatever, but due to that, they also won’t be alienating you either.
The Cooperative Extension Service (US only) exists in all 50 states and in most counties. It is taxpayer funded. The Extension Service exists to help people become more self sufficient, for farmers to be more successful, for people to be healthier, for kids to be well adjusted, to figure out how to grow the best plants in your area, etc. Some county offices even offer cheap classes in things like gardening, canning, soap making, and they’re taught by people with training in these areas (I once heard a great talk on composting from a soil scientist that way). Do you want to know what type of plant something is? Do you need help figuring out a plant disease or pest issue? You can now contact them online and get great info.
I HIGHLY recommend checking out your state’s extension service website, because they do offer different types of information, depending on what is grown/raised where you are (and how well funded they are). My county extension puts out a monthly gardening newsletter, which includes a helpful ‘this is the time of the year to do —-’ part.
Here’s an example from North Carolina - check out that left sidebar
Here’s an example from California - this website is HUGE so dig around
Here’s an example from New York - they have a calendar at the bottom, showing how they have things like hydroponic and urban agriculture workshops coming up.
Interested in raising animals? Penn State Extension is really really good. They have tons of free materials and courses available online, some I pulled for my megalist at the top of this.
National Center for Home Food Preservation - they cover the important aspects of food safety, and also have some recipes. Many state Extension Service websites will have lots more recipes.
If you have kids, check out 4-H programs for them. It’s part of the local public school system here. If you’re homeschooling, you can also purchase their science-filled educational and self sufficiency materials (materials are divided by age ranges - Cloverbud Member: ages 5-8, Junior Member: ages 9-13, Senior Member: ages 14-19). One of my coworkers is in 4-H, she’s still in high school, and last year she raised an award-winning heifer.
Congress grants the money for funding these programs, and they’re connected with various universities. There’s a level of cutting edge scientific knowledge and academic rigor you don’t find in blogs or even most books. There’s LOTS of homesteading books filled with outdated information like ‘till the earth every year’ hell I still have older coworkers who do it and I’m trying to figure out how to gently tell them that they’re destroying their soil that way, and that there’s better methods now, methods grounded in science.
Knitting - try this youtube series
Hope this is helpful to someone out there.
HOLY FUCKIN SHIT BLESS
For a while now I've been wanting to try painting over the Pillars of Creation photo taken by the Webb telescope.
When I was a kid I thought the earlier version looked like a bunch of dragons racing to the sky, and I think the new pic looks even more like it, so, here they are~
For reference, same crop of the photo down here:
This is SO stunning 😍😍
Oddly specific. Got a deposit for 6,837 today
fuck it, i never ever do those “reblog for X, this one really works!” posts, but this one doesn’t have any of that BS, this is just straight up wishing us good things; and then the comment doesn’t even say any of that either. Zero claims on this post, all positive vibes
May you end this week feeling ever more certain of a future you’ll love
Here is a link to the US Restrict Act (commonly known as the TikTok ban) as it is currently written.
Please read the actual bill and share even if you do not live in the United States. The precedents this piece of legislation would set would have far reaching impacts on how the internet is used for everyone in the future.
We’ve got a problem here. I know most people here probably hate tiktok, and for some good reasons, but believe it or not there’s actually a good amount of good on tiktok too.
But this isn’t about banning tiktok. That’s just a cover for this, given power thanks to Meta (Facebook) lobbyists pretty much paying the United States Government.
For the tldr: This act, while saying it’s to insure American’s personal information will be safe from foreign powers, it goes much deeper than that.
- It will give the United States Government the power to remove and ban ANY online service they deem “a security risk” while making it so they do not need just cause and do not need to clarify or release a public statement.
- It allows them the power to gather American’s data without our knowledge or consent and even force us to submit documentation for anything they wish.
- It protects the government from scrutiny on this, and if you try to speak about it and inform people on what it ACTUALLY allows, they can claim it to be false information and charge you.
- It prevents you from using a VPN as it’s seen as a breach of information security, thus they can charge you.
- Failure to abide by these “guidelines” can lead to a fine up to ONE MILLION DOLLARS and/or 20 YEARS in prison.
- And above all it does NOTHING to prevent AMERICAN companies from collecting and selling your data.
And that’s not even everything it does. This isn’t about banning tiktok. It’s about control, taking away our freedom of speech, censorship, and selfish monetary gain. This doesn’t just affect tiktok users. This affects ALL Americans, small businesses, communities, and even those that use American online products, like Tumblr.
The US is turning into a fascist regime, where they are slowly but surely stripping away our rights and freedoms even more than they already have. And it terrifies me.
If you’re not an American, please share this. We already have a hard enough time knowing what goes on with those in other countries. This could make it all the more difficult.
And if you are an American, share this, then contact your state representative and your state senators. Email, phone, even mailing a physical letter for crying out loud. You can search “who is my representative and senators?” on Google, bing, duck-duck-go, or whatever, and it’ll take you to where you can find that out and even how to contact them.
Calmly and professionally tell them that not only do you NOT support the TikTok ban(since that is the cover they are using), but you DO NOT support the Restrict Act.
And let them know that if this bill is to pass, you will be spending all your time and energy supporting their opponents in the PRIMARIES. They do not expect Americans to contact them about this, so not only will they see us going out of our way to contact them, but by saying you’ll be supporting their OPPONENTS, they’ll have to either listen or have to spend thousands of not millions of dollars in campaigning so they don’t lose their nice day paychecks, and to them this is all about money so it’ll hit them where it hurts.
It doesn’t matter what political party you’re on, because BOTH parties in office want this. This is not about sides. This is about the ENTIRE government stripping our rights away so they can keep lining their own pockets.
And while we’re at it? Review bomb anything related to meta it Facebook. Meta started all this because they couldn’t compete with tiktok or buy it, so they paid lobbyists to convince congress to ban tiktok so they didn’t HAVE to compete.
And here’s the kicker… Many people of congress actually bought stock in Meta RIGHT BEFORE this all started. They are LITERALLY trying to manipulate the market for themselves. So let them burn.
Due to personal reasons I will be loving myself with my whole heart
so glad so many people decided that they should love themselves as well, yes, you go best friends, you are stunning, gorgeous, amazing, cool and deserve to look in the mirror at yourself with love, not hate. Don't waste your precious time hating person you are, it's not worth it, you have so many better things to do

20 Common Interview Questions, What They Really Mean, and How to Smartly Answer Them
This is a sheet given to me by my college’s business department and I thought it was helpful so I’ve typed it up fr you guys. All credits to my college business department.
1. Tell me about yourself. What it means: What are your career goals for the next 1-3 years/5-10 years?
- This question might come in different forms, but it is the most often asked question in interviews, especially at the start. Have a short statement prepared that describes a little about your past, a lot about your present, and a little about your future that essentially answers the question, “Why are we sitting across from each other and talking today?” Be careful that it does not sound rehearsed and be sure you sound excited about the opportunity and fully engaged. Limit your answer to relevance with the interview. Talk about things you have done that relate to the position you are interviewing for and show strategy in your thinking that led you to this interview. Start with the item farthest back, work up to the present and touch on the future. Let the recruiter know how this position ties into the career map you have planned. Set the footing to shift from a mundane interview into impactful dialogue.
2. How did you choose this line of work?
- They are looking for people who are strategic and apply critical thinking to decisions. Have a good answer ready, showing passion for the field.
3. Why did you leave your last job? or Why do you want to leave your job? or What did you enjoy/not enjoy about your last job?
- Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Don’t refer to a major problem with management and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers or the company. If you do, you will be sullied. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a hopeful, forward-looking reason (i.e. chance to make an impact, use skills, etc.).
4. What experience do you have in this field? or Why should we hire you? or Give me an example from your experience or education that shows your readiness for this role.
- Speak about specifics that relate to the position for which you are applying. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can (aka make it up). It is critical that you prepare by unpacking your brain, and know how to tie your experiences/skills to the position description. Give them your best pitch and smile!
5. What do co-workers/former employers say about you?
- Be prepared with a quote or two. Either a specific statement or a paraphrase will work. “Jamal Clark, a colleague at Smith Company, always said I was the hardest worker he’d ever known.” It is as powerful as Jamal saying it at the interview himself. Trouble answering this? Ask former colleagues and professional friends for their opinions!
6. What do you know about our firm? or Why do you want to work for us? Or Why do you want the job?
- These questions are the primary reason to do research on the organization before the interview. Find out where they have been and where they are going. What are the current issues? Who are the major players? Can you get behind their mission? Crucial research includes reviewing their “About Us” webpages, googling current events where they were involved, and looking on Glassdoor.com to get the scoop on positive things their employees are saying. This takes thought and should be based on the research you have done on the organization as a whole plus a mention of the specific position. Know that job description very well! Sincerity is extremely important. Relate response to long-term career goals. A flat answer here may end the interview, so be prepared.
7. What kind of salary do you need?
- It’s a loaded question and a thorny game that you will probably lose if you answer first. So, try not to answer it. Instead, consider discussing how the experience this opportunity offers is the main compensation you are seeking. Or, if you want the conversation to unfold, try, “What is the pay range someone with my skill set and degree could expect for this position?” In some cases, the interviewer will tell you. If not, say that it can depend on the details of the job and ask if you can discuss at a later stage in the interviewing process so you more fully understand the responsibilities of the position. If the interviewer presses, be sure you have done your research on appropriate salaries and give a $7k pay range that makes sense for your lifestyle, your experience, your location, and the position. Use salary.com, Glassdoor.com and Bureau of Labor Statistics to do your research.
8. Provide an example of your ability to think quickly and clearly on your feet.
- Companies are looking for innovative thinkers who do not need to be coddled and who truly are up to the challenges of business, most of which require timely, analytical, and creative people. Have a robust STAR** story ready to address this question.
9. Tell me about a time when you helped get a team focused and led them to success.
- You are, of course, a team player, right? Be sure to have examples ready: specific stories that show you often perform for the good of the team rather than for personal success are good evidence of your team attitude. Do not brag; just say it in a matter-of-fact tone. This is a key point. Use the STAR** method to stay focused and provide a thorough reply.
10. Are you applying for other jobs?
- Be honest but do not spend a lot of time in this area. Keep the focus on this job and what you can do for this organization. Anything else is a distraction.
11. Have you ever been asked to leave a position? I
- f you have not, say no. If you have, be honest, be brief and avoid saying negative things about yourself, the people or organization involved. Find the positive spin.
12. What is your greatest strength? Follow Up: Tell me about a time when this professional strength made the difference between success and failure.
- Numerous answers are good, just stay optimistic and truthful. A few good examples: ability to prioritize, work under pressure, solve problems or focus on projects, perhaps professional expertise, leadership skills, positive attitude, reporting skills… but be able to prove your reply with a STAR** story.
13. What kind of person would you refuse to work with?
- Do not be trivial. It should take disloyalty to the organization, violence, or criminal behavior to get you to refuse to work with a colleague. Minor objections may label you as a whiner. If the version of this question is, “What type of person do you prefer not to work with?”, again don’t be trivial, lengthy, or negative. Focus on discussing your ability to work well with just about anyone.
14. Tell me about a time when you had an idea to improve a process.
- They are looking to see that you can (a) take enough ownership to even think about improvements, (b) think creatively and challenge norms, © present enhancements to others with emotionally intelligence, and (d) consider risks of change. Have a great STAR** story!
15. Tell me about a problem you had with a supervisor.
- This is a test - If you fall for it and start tearing up an old boss, you failed. Stay positive and either reply that you have not had any trouble with a supervisor if that’s the case, or provide a short STAR** story about how you constructively worked to solve the issue and how your relationship was strengthened as a result. Focus on the happy result!
16. What motivates you to do your best on the job? or What do you expect from your employer?
- This is personal - be accurate and honest, yet relevant to the job - but examples for motivation are: Challenge, Achievement, Recognition, Positive Impact, Helping Others. For expectations, you can discuss motivation first and then add something like, “I expect that my employer will communicate her needs clearly so I can drive toward strong results.” Add anything you deem fitting here, but avoid coming off as entitled or high maintenance.
17. Do you have any blind spots or weaknesses?
- Tricky question - Do not reveal personal areas of concern but focus on how you want to grow professionally. In discussing weakness, focus on the BUT, i.e. “In the past I have put a lot of pressure on myself, but I have been overcoming that as my skills sharpen and challenges lessen.”
18. Tell me about a time that you had to analyze several solutions to make a sound decision.
- This question dives into the ability to create a framework for strategic thinking and proves you have a set process to make good decisions. Tell a STAR** story where the situation is not simple and you can give specifics on the pros and cons assessed, the sources of information tapped into, the info gathered, and insights made to come to a conclusion.
19. How do you stay organized?
- Attending to details, planning, organizing, and prioritizing work takes skill. Talk about how you manage your life or work using specific methods, as well as tools you use. You can even provide a STAR** story that speaks to how these qualities led to a success at some point in your life, career, or education.
20. What questions do you have for me?
- Interviews should go both ways. Have about 5 good questions ready to ask so you can gather the information you need to make a well-informed decision. These questions should be informational in nature and allow you to understand the position and company better while reinforcing your interest and enthusiasm. This is not a good time to talk about benefits, pay, etc. That info will come in time.
**The STAR Technique is a way to frame answers to behavioral questions in an organized manner that will give the interviewer the most information about your past experience. (This is the part where the paper says to have at least 10 of these ready but I think that’s insane. Have a couple and be prepared to tweak them based on the question. Don’t use the same few for the same interview. i’d say having about 3-5 ready is good enough.) As you prepare to answer each question, organize your response for clarity by answering each of the following components of the STAR technique:
- What was the Situation in which you were involved?
- What was the Task you needed to accomplish?
- What Actions did you take?
- What Results did you achieve?
IMPORTANT TIPS: Give a good amount of detail to paint a very clear picture at each step, focus on YOU versus the group, and if the Result wasn’t very positive or does not place you in a great light, that it is not interview material!
