I get so upset when I hear adults talking about teen suicide because it just makes me wonder.......why the hell do they think these things? Why one earth are they thinking this way? They have no idea what it’s like to be a teenager these days. To be more specific, I went to a panel of Psychology Experts at my college because that’s my field of study. During the question portion of the panel, someone asked the panel about “13 Reasons why”.
Now, I actually watched it and I do think that unfortunately there are people that are romanticizing suicide and making too many jokes because of the show and that’s terrible, but I think that the show really brought some important and serious questions about suicide to the table and really exposed some of the nasty stuff that goes on in public high schools and also what can happen depending on your circumstances, like girls being targets for sexual harassment just because they’re girls or rich boys getting away with rape because they’re rich.
Anyway, none of the Experts on the Panel had actually watched the show or heard about it, so the girl who asked the question attempted to explain the show to them. This brought up the problem of teen suicide, which is primarily what this text post is about; how adults view teen suicide.
The Experts began with saying that the show sounded like a terrible idea because, well, it brought up suicide. They used other words, but that’s what it came down to. They proceeded to explain that when a teen commits suicide, they go to the high school and do their “crisis work”. This includes preventing memorials for the student who committed suicide. Now that, to me, sounds kind of crazy. They tried to reason that a memorial and things like that for a student that commits suicide leads to others doing the same because others will see that said person got a bunch of attention and they want some, too. So instead, they try to not talk about that person, like maybe they never existed. To me, that’s so wrong.
The thing that gets me is that adults believe that they understand what’s going on in our heads better than we do. Honestly, how hungry for attention do adults think that we are? Do they think that teenagers that commit suicide are only doing it for attention? Because let’s be honest, if that’s their reaction to suicide, then that’s what they’re thinking.
But anyone who is and has been a teenager in recent times knows that that isn’t how it works. Personally, I think that if other students that are struggling with depression might see the how the adults are covering up the suicide, not talking about it, and not letting anyone show that they actually cared that the person was gone, and then totally fall into a downward spiral and maybe end up taking their own life because, well, “no one cared when the other person did it and no one will care when I do it”. To me, that’s more accurate.
I just feel like adult involvement just makes situations worse sometimes, and I honestly was pretty upset after hearing the Panel talk about teen suicide because it showed how little they actually know about teens.
I really want to hear what other people think, so please leave your opinion on this if you have the time.
