“I am so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers” L.M. Montgomery

Yeah, sure, there are probably better villains out there, but that scene where Olaf is put on ‘trial’ by every major character in ASOUE and he’s just like, “Yeah, I’ve done evil shit, I’m proud of some of it, I regret some of it, but I still did it. I ruined the lives of the Baudelaire children……..and what did you ever do to stop me?” before ripping into every adult who ever hurt the Baudelaires by ignoring their pleas for help and by enabling him (even if it was just by neglecting to stop him), is still one of the best scenes that any villain has ever been in and every other writer needs to get on Handler’s level.

I wrote the above on mobile and wanted to post it before it all got deleted but just know that this was going to be the initial post:

Me, aged ten, reading the chapter where Olaf calls out every adult who neglected the Baudelaires:

But in all seriousness, I once saw a post where someone said that the whole scene was him victim-blaming the adults. The thing is, yes, every adult in ASOUE, even Olaf himself, was a victim. None of the members of the VFD should have had to face those levels of fear and paranoia. But regardless of their own trauma, none of them should have forced a fourteen-year-old, a twelve-year-old, and an infant to take on the burden of raising/protecting themselves. It’s the same problem I have when people argue that the Dursleys never wanted to take Harry in. Sure. They never asked for that life. But they had that life nonetheless, no matter how unfair it was, and they could have chosen to either get over it and help a child (/children) or succumb to hatred/neglect.

Olaf knew which ones the VFD members chose. And so did the Baudelaires. That’s why they didn’t actually object to any of Olaf’s rant which is what makes the scene so amazing—the fact that Olaf was right and the kids knew it.

ASOUE is all about how intent/excuses aren’t enough to change the negative things that happen because those negative things still happened. And if Olaf was going down, he was going to be damn well sure that the VFD was called out. Truth be told, I always figured that their way of approaching and excusing morality was what caused the schism in the first place, but that’s just me.

so I got into grad school today with my shitty 2.8 gpa and the moral of the story is reblog those good luck posts for the love of god

okay so i just got my dream job??? a week after applying to it?? and now i’m thinking….maybe this is the good luck post

…..not even six hours later i got an offer of a well paying full time long-term job with free room and board in queens in nyc, allowing me independence and a way to escape an abusive situation and an unhealthy environment

likes charge reblogs cast, folks, this is the good luck post

if it ends up being biden v trump we gotta start burnin shit down

No. We don’t.

What we have to do is fucking GROW UP.

There’s not one single thing in the world (outside of the choice of what’s for dinner) that gives “us” 100% of what we want 100% of the time. This is especially true for politics.

Do you know what Biden is?

An acceptable (note: not perfect. not necessarily desirable.) compromise candidate who can pull the largest number of people behind him.

Do you know what Biden is? A candidate who can carry the Midwest and Rust Belt states, the flyover states that went to Trump and guaranteed his victory.

He’s a candidate with experience. He’s a candidate who has been in the trenches for decades, has seen social challenges and changes, who has been wrong in the past (but right for the time he was in, wrong when viewed with today’s lens) and has apologized for the “mistakes” he has made.

He’s lost his son and grieved deeply.

Would I like to see other candidates? sure. I particularly like Mayor Pete Buttigieg. But when the time comes to enter the voting booth? Vote for the party (that’d be Democrat) if you can’t vote for the candidates, because it’s better to have Biden than Trump.

If it’s Joe Biden, I will vote for him. Do I want him to be the candidate? No! Is he better than Trump? Yes!

If it’s Pete Buttigieg, I will vote for him. Do I want him to be the candidate? No! Is he better than Trump? Yes!

If it’s Beto Freaking O’Rourke, I will vote for him. Do I want him to be the candidate? No! Is he better than Trump? Yes!

I’m gonna level with you, I have qualms about EVERY SINGLE DEMOCRAT IN THE RACE. I’m leaning toward Elizabeth Warren. But no matter who ends up getting the nomination, they are going to be better than Trump. Trump is abusing the hell out of executive privilege. He’s gotten to appoint a fuckton of judges. He’s taking unilateral action to restrict civil rights, particularly the rights of trans people. There are legitimate concerns that Trump will try to resist stepping aside if he loses the 2020 election! At this point, the name of the game is containing the fucking damage.

If men stopped working…the world would continue on.

If women stopped working, then things would get ugly.

What?

there has been an instance where this happened. it was 1975 and icelandic women decided not to work for one day.  working as in cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children, doing chores and so on, not only “not showing up to your workplace”. women did nothing that day, except showing up in reykjavik and protesting for gender equality, equal pay and equal representation in parliament, you know, cool stuff.  you know what happened? havoc. men were left with food to cook and children they never took care of to pick up from kindergarden and entertain for the day. they went en masse to the food shops buying sausages because they could cook nothing else, they had to bond with children they never spent more than a couple hours a day with. they struggled combining their work day and the domestic tasks they had to sort out. and this just for one day. iceland in 1975 stopped working and things indeed got ugly. so ugly that women in the following decades became woke AF and soon it happened that women became president, took half of the seats in parliament and achieved one of the best living environments in the world. is your astonishment solved now?

Literally what happens then is women say “Ok fine we’ll do that too” and do it.

‘In 1778, two Irish gentlewomen put on men’s clothing and ran away together.  Lady Eleanor Butler had received several offers of marriage but was determined to share her life with her friend Sarah Ponsonby. […] They spent the rest of their lives in a black and white house called Plas Newydd outside Llangollen, cultivating their garden, improving their minds and filling the house with clocks, cabinets and “whirligigs of every shape and hue”.  [They also had] a little dog called Sapho.’

Male historians: wow what good friends they were :)

If ur arabic ur great If ur arabic and muslim ur great If ur arabic and queer ur great If ur arabic and muslim and queer ur great I know it seems hard to believe but you’re not bad you’re not awful

Hey if you’re not arabic can you reblog this? I hardly ever see any positivity towards us and I just wanna spread love to my Arab siblings

Exactly.

Imagine a wall full of circular holes, that circles can keep walking in and out of with no difficulty.

Now imagine that the triangles manage to get the resources together, after years of not being able to fit through the circle’s holes, to drill a single triangle space into the wall.

Now imagine that the circle — who previously supported the triangle’s efforts because they are well-rounded (har) and value equality —  comes along and sees the construction project. But instead of being happy, they get angry.

“Well, I won’t be able to fit through your hole!!!!” the circle cries.

“I helped you get the drill!!!!” the circle shrieks.

“Make it fit me too!!!!” the circle demands.

The triangles, barely holding it together enough to get a triangle hole together, stare at the circle in confusion.

“You have all the holes you need,” the triangles explain. “This is for us. You don’t need to fit through our hole, too.”

“YOU’RE BEING UNEQUAL AND HURTING MY FEELINGS!” the circle wails. “I DON’T SUPPORT YOUR HOLE IF IT DOESN’T FIT ME TOO. GIVE ME MY DRILL BACK.”

“It’s not your drill, it’s our drill. You helped us get it, because you said you cared.”

“I ONLY CARED WHEN I THOUGHT YOU’D MAKE A HOLE EVERYONE COULD FIT THROUGH. YOU’RE PERPETUATING INEQUALITY!!!”

“Why is it up to us, the small group that has never been able to fit through the wall at all, to make a hole everyone can use? Why isn’t it up to you, the people who have been able to cross back and forth at will for years? We just want to see the other side; why are you yelling at us?”

“I DIDN’T ASK TO BE BORN A CIRCLE, OMG. I’VE HAD TO WORK HARD ALL MY LIFE TOO. YOU’RE JUST BEING BIGOTED AGAINST ME BECAUSE OF SOMETHING I CAN’T CONTROL, JUST LIKE EVERYONE IS AGAINST YOU.”

“You are interfering with our project and asking us to comfort you while we’re trying to make progress. Please leave.”

“I’m going to tell everyone about this,” the circle warns. “Nobody will support you now.”

“Apparently nobody ever did,” the triangles sigh, getting back to work.

It’s kind of sad

That we have to draw comics using colorful shapes

Systematic Inequality : 101

Cinderella was too weak to fight for herself...AND THAT’S OKAY!

I cannot believe we’re still tearing Cinderella down! 2018 only has a few months left and we’re still doing this, we’re still painting her as the weakest Disney princess and we’re still painting her weakness as a bad thing?

Why?

Why are people so caught up on bashing this princess?

“The movie is so simplistic—”

In what way is it possibly simplistic?!

“She didn’t work hard—”

YES, SHE DID!

“Well, okay, but the fairy godmother still had to come in—”

Yep, I remember the movie too, and the countless stories on which it’s based.

“So the fairy godmother was the one who caused the happily ever after.”

She sure was, now, what’s your point?

No, really, what’s your point? Is the point that Cinderella is somehow weak because she wasn’t 100% in control of her own life? Seems like a pretty disgusting opinion to have when the whole movie is about an abuse victim finding a way out of her horrible situation. So Cinderella wasn’t the one who got herself out. So what? Instead of looking the movie at its bare surface, maybe try analyzing it with a bit more thought and tact. You might see something a little different. A magical transformation, if you will.

Because Cinderella did work hard.

And guess what we learned from that?

You can work

and work

and work

And there will still be people out there who will try to tear you apart:

Literally.

And that sucks. It’s a horrible lesson to learn but it is something we will all face in our lifetimes. There will always be people who will try to tear us down, there will always be people who will try to rip us apart, until we’re in a low place:

Until it seems like there’s no hope…

Until it seems like you’re too weak to get out on your own…

And maybe you are.

Maybe you are too weak to get out on your own. Maybe you’re not the strongest woman in the world. Maybe you’re not capable of screaming at the top of your lungs or brandishing a weapon or throwing a punch. Maybe you’re not able to get out of something on your own. Maybe you hit a low point and maybe you have no way out of it. Not alone. But that’s just it.

You’re not alone.

Even at your lowest point, someone will come help you.

You don’t have to do it all alone.

It’s okay to have a little help when you have nowhere else to turn.

Cinderella is the story about an abuse victim who is unable to get out of her toxic situation by herself and just when she begins to lose all hope, is able to get help from an unlikely source. It’s the story about a girl who needs help getting to her happily ever after and that’s okay

Give us advocates:

They deserve their happily ever afters!

Give us warriors:

They deserve their happily ever afters!

Give us fighters:

They deserve their happily ever afters!

Give us girls who are not advocates, girls who are not warriors, girls who are not fighters, girls who still deserves their happily ever afters:

Even the idea that there is a video where an American man rape a kid makes me sick. Ashton Kutcher is doing a great job by using his power and privilege to raise awareness about human trafficking. Every parent dreams of the bright, happy and SAFE future to his/her child. This guy tries to change this country, this world into a better one. This Hollywood celebrity woke up and tried to draw the government’s attention to this very crucial problem of child trafficking.

LIFE TIPS PT. I

  1. if it takes less than two minutes, do it now
  2. always carry a water bottle!! you’ll (obviously) drink more water but you’ll also save money on buying drinks when you’re out on hot days
  3. if you notice something you like about someone, tell them. genuine compliments are way too few and far between.
  4. when you meet someone, repeat their name back to them. it’ll help you remember it (bc i am the worst at zoning out and immediately forgetting someone’s name)
  5. give yourself a time limit to get work done. you’ll do more up against a 30 minute timer than if you have all day to get something done
  6. also: be specific with your goals. if you want it done by winter, say you’ll do it one november 15. it’s easy to let time slip by.
  7. no one’s forcing your friends to hang out with you. they want to be around you. don’t try to convince yourself otherwise.
  8. never under estimate the power of a hot meal if you’re feeling unmotivated. take a break and make a grilled cheese dude
  9. always keep $20 in your car for emergences
  10. have a binder/folder to keep all your financial/important documents together. even if you don’t organize them beyond that it’ll make them so much easier to find when you need them
  11. don’t sleep w makeup on!! keep a travel size thing of makeup wipes by your bed for nights that you’re too exhausted to wash your face for real
  12. if you’re studying/working and can’t focus, go outside and take a walk around the building. stare at the sky for a minute. it helps.
  13. networking: when you meet someone, put some notes in with their contact. remembering their kids’ names will make you stand out
  14. fold your clothes while they’re still warm + you won’t have to iron later
  15. get that chair out of your room. we all know your dirty clothes are sitting in it more than you are.
  16. instead, stick some hooks on your closet door for those sorta-clean, sorta-dirty clothes that you wanna wear again
  17. keep a running list on your phone of songs you hear that you like, books you want to read, etc
  18. write down all your friends birthdays!!
  19. if you can’t sleep, try to imagine something in great detail. design your dream house. plan your wedding. whatever makes you happy + relaxed
  20. get dressed as soon as you get up, even if you aren’t going anywhere. it’s hard to feel productive in sweat pants.
  21. if you don’t ask, the answer is always no
  22. thrift stores are super trendy lately, but they really are great for finding high-quality clothing for cheap.
  23. don’t read the comments section. especially if it’s something you actually care about.
  24. fresh veggies go bad fast, so if you can’t get to the store often have a couple frozen bags of your favs on hand!!
  25. also, pasta is crazy cheap and easy to make into a meal. add some olive oil and those frozen veggies and bam, grown up meal in no time.
  26. be intentional with your friendships. if you want to see someone again, set a date instead of the old “let’s get coffee sometime!” that never actually happens
  27. libraries exist!! and theyre fantastic!!!
  28. if you’re buying anything, always google “_______ coupons” while you’re in line. you can usually find one, esp at chains!!
  29. if it’s not something you need, put it back and sleep on it. if you want it bad enough to go back and get it a day or two later, it’s (probably) worth the money.
  30. also, think if you’ll enjoy it for the same amount of time if took to earn that money. doesn’t work with everything (food, experiences), but for things like clothes/technology/home goods, it can help you save some $$$
  31. you don’t have to do something if it makes you unhappy. sure, there are times that you have to suck it up and power through, but 99% of the time you have to option to say no and get outta there.
  32. be kind. seriously you hear it a lot but it is so important.
