Concept Awesome

Hi. I'm Queenie. I blog predominantly about asexuality-related stuff. I also blog over at The Asexual Agenda, and run Resources for Ace Survivors. See my about page if you actually want to sort of know things about me. Anyway, hi. (Please note that this is not an advice or 101 blog. Check the FAQ for rules about asks.)

Hey, I read your posts all the time back when you were more active and I was figuring myself out. Just wanted to say: Thanks, and I hope whatever you're up to now is going well. :)

Hi, anon! Thank you for your lovely note! I'm really glad that my posts were helpful for you.

I'm doing...okay-ish these days! Started a new job as a professor, so I'm currently recovering from last semester/feverishly prepping for next semester, thus the continued radio silence. I am very tired all the time these days, but what else is new. There are a couple of posts that have been stewing in my mind for...literal years at this point, but we'll see if/when they manifest. (I am figuring out how to get involved in the queer mentorship program at my uni, and have connected with my local ace meet-up, although am currently too wiped to make the trek to meet-ups during the semester.)

Anyway, thank you for dropping me a line, and I hope that you're having a lovely day. ♣️

In which I think I’m exploring multidirectional memory as a counter to the oppression olympics, but it turns out that asexual community memory is a site of ongoing ambiguous loss for me that I have to work through.

This one is pretty intellectual, introduces a lot of academic concepts, thinks through a lot of things, you know. But I also call myself a Lorax, so let it never be said I take myself too seriously :P

For the record, I think being haunted by the ghosts of people who aren’t dead is a pretty common occurrence in the internet age; it’s just that the haunting only has meaning to anyone beyond me personally for the asexual ghosts.

This survey is about gray-asexuality and grayromanticism. Anyone is invited to take it, regardless of identity. The purpose of this survey is to investigate perspectives on these identities and how they are understood.

Click here to take the survey. It will remain open until September 15th.

Questions about the survey can be asked in the comments on wordpress (no account required) or via this contact form.

Today this blog turns 10 years old!  Absolutely wild that I’ve been here for a decade (even if I’ve been pretty quiet on this blog the last few years).

Some quick updates from me before I vanish once more into the ether:

  • I’m using she/they pronouns these days, if you haven’t already heard
  • I am officially Dr. Queenie!  Dissertation is submitted to ProQuest and everything.  If you’ve been wondering where I’ve been, the answer is writing 115k of text.  Also, yes, the conclusion to my dissertation is about queer futurity.
  • This fall I will be Professor Queenie!
  • In related news...Pacific Northwest aces...I may be darkening your meet-up groups (we’ll see if I can circumvent social anxiety)

I feel like I should end with a linkspam or something but I gotta work on a conference paper that’s due on Monday so please imagine your ideal linkspam in your mind (and then build it--you too possess the linkspamming power).

LYRICS I've been a mercenary, yes been a thief of tenderness I've been out here so damn long I had no words for what I was I let them fill the gaps because I was so sure that I was wrong

Now I'm home but does it fit Home but am I it? Home but do I count at all? Home, is it a bluff? Home, am I enough? Home, can I unbuild this wall?

And they say “let the labels be; just live your life, yeah, fancy free” Oh but my fancy's gone so fast Cause I'm a taxonomist I need the language in my fist I need to pin it under glass

So I'm home, to lay a claim Home, to use the name Home if I've earned the right Home, or maybe not Home, with caveats turning like a satellite

And so I talk to others and they tell me this is the homeland: circling around and 'round The only time I have no doubt: when fuckers try to force us out In battle I can claim this ground

So it's home for me and you home if you want it too Home, open every door Home, and then it's clear Home, so gather here Home, that's what home is for

Now announcing the launch of the Quoi Identity Survey! The purpose of this survey is to investigate the identities, demographics, and community involvement of those who affiliate with the quoiromantic, quoisexual, or quoigender umbrellas. Quoiromanticism is a concept that originated from a disidentification with romantic orientation, due to the specific intracommunity norms of the asexual community. The same principle has since been applied to gender and sexuality. However, you do not need to identify with a specific term in order to participate in this survey. If you are unsure whether you are part of the intended demographic, you are invited to err on the side of yes. The survey will remain open until April 7th.

If you've been playing the home game here, you know what this is and you know you want it and now you can have it so go get it.

eBook preorders for You Are Asexual are now available at these and other fine eBook retailers:

(Paperback edition coming soon!)

If you haven't been following along, "You Are Asexual" is a Choose Your Own Adven- um, I mean - non-linear book with reader selectable story paths at certain points. You are a student at Facility 4, where you have lived for the past six years. It's finally Orientation Day, the day when all the students are given their sexual orientation!

Everyone, that is, except you...

Can you survive the sudden outbreak of canoodling and cavorting and unravel the mystery of what the nefarious Consortium is up to? Or would you rather sit around and play video games all day? Either way, the choice is yours in this book!

It has a dragon!

It has a flying city in the sky!

It has a cake-filled hidden speakeasy!

It has danger and excitement and lots of crows!

It has a mysterious secret cave!

It has a bunch of other stuff I'm not going to tell you about because I want you to buy it!

I mean, come on, what's not to like? It's a choose your own adventure style book with an asexual theme!

So anyway the other day Coyote asked me to explain a concept that, in my mind, has been the consuming goal of my ace activism for years but when I went back to my archive there was, in fact, nothing specifically laying out the subject. I have reflected upon this, and have decided to perhaps write more straightforward pieces in the future. But since straightforward pieces are no fun, I have written this one like a guide to birding from 1916.
