felix exuberating theater-kid energy nonstop this season just makes me imagine his pv chat noir design being a parody of adrien's chat noir

I am a sucker for puns and I will make them whenever I can, but I have never seen a better pun than the title of the Good Place Season 4 Episode 7 “Help is Other People”. For those who may not understand, this a play on the quote “Hell is other people” from the play No Exit by Sartre. the idea in No Exit was that 3 people were sent to Hell and as punishment, they had to live with each other for eternity. at first they thought they got off easily, but they soon realized that their specific personalities, flaws, and idiosyncrasies played off each other in such away that they would never be able to live together peacefully. because as soon as 2 of them reached an agreement, the other one would ruin it, and so on, and so on.

and that idea, of a group of people playing off each others flaws in order to create the worst situation for everyone involved, was the exact idea behind Michael’s first experiment. he gathered Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason specifically because their specific traits created the worst possible outcome for all of them. but it backfired, because instead of hurting and ruining each other, they consistently helped each other to grow and mature time after time, even on earth, essentially turning “Hell is other people” into “Help is other people”

but that’s not it, because remember, that’s all seasons 1-3 and this title is in season 4. you see, in season 4 they tried to recreate the experiment with new people to see if it work the same (despite being a fundamentally different experiment, but that’s another post). the participants-Simone, Chidi, John, and Brent-were supposed to help each other grow the way the original participants had. and in this episode, the new experiment is coming to a close, and the Soul Squad is desperately trying to rack up a few last points and get these people to help each other. to put aside their problems with each other and just help each other to grow and mature and change. and it almost works. if there had just been a few more seconds, it might have.

anyway to recap the reason I love this so much is because the phrase “Help is other people” is essentially the show’s entire thesis and statement on human interactions, and it is a play on the phrase “Hell is other people” which was the thought behind Michael’s original experiment, and the episode for which it’s the title, is the episode in which the Eleanor, Michael, and the others are most desperate for it to be true.

Last song: “Seven Nation Army” as covered by Voiceplay. They’re an accapella group, and they are incredible. Their arrangements are just fantastic, and the pure skill on display is amazing.

Currently watching: I just finished “Shiny Happy People” on Prime and it is harrowing. I would recommend it, but heavy trigger warnings for cults, sexual abuse, violence against children, and child sexual abuse. It’s deeply troubling, but a very well made documentary.

Currently reading: “The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi” by S.A. Chakraborty. I loved her Daevabad trilogy, in particular her world-building. If you need a break from Euro-centric fantasy, give it a try. The book I’m currently reading is very clearly inspired by the One Thousand One Nights, though you don’t need to have read that to understand it. (And she acknowledges that LGBTQ folk exist, even in 16th century Arabia.) I’m also reading “The Plutonium Files” by Eileen Welsome, which is a different animal altogether. Nonfiction, focusing on radiological experiments performed on human test subjects without their knowledge or consent. It starts with the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, and presumably ends in 1999 when it was published. It’s out of print now, but a free e-version is available on ResearchGate.

Current obsession: I’m between hyperfocus sessions at the moment. Unless cleaning my house counts as an obsession, because I’m tackling that with single-minded determination this (long) weekend. But! I have been poking at the lore and gameplay around “Fear and Hunger” and “Fear and Hunger: Termina” which has been fun. (Uh…trigger warning again. Violence, sexual violence, existential horror.)

Last song: Something from Humanity - Chapter V by Thomas Bergersen. I’ve only recently discovered it. It sounds like something written for some kind of fantasy story and also lots of big orchestra sounds and I love it. (Clearly I’m quite the articulate music critic.) According to the internet, he has also composed music for various movies and his music genre can be described as ‘epic music’, which seems appropriate.

Currently watching: I’m not sure what the last thing I watched was. Probably the March Madness college basketball tournament? (It’s now July, so apparently I don’t watch much tv.) I watch it with my grandma. I’m not much of a sports person but we do follow the basketball teams of my current and prior schools. (She has done so since long before I attended.)

Currently reading: Research articles. So many research articles. Just… so many. (Why did I do this to myself??? Oh yeah, because they’re actually interesting, and I seem to think I can change things for the better or something silly like that.) With occasional fanfic in between.

Current obsession: Half Transformers (never have I ever had this many characters in a fandom that I love before), half Trying To Make Progress On This Stupid Literature Review That I Have Been Working On For Two Years But Now I’ve Quit My Job So Maybe Now I Finally Can But Really I’d Rather Just Write Fic But I Can’t Decide So I End Up Doing None Of It. That last one seems to be very popular in academia.

If you want to laugh about the dark side of your favorite animals and see way too many similarities between humanity and the animal world, watch his videos.
