feel like i need to watch this movie 3 times but one thing i thought was an interesting change from the graphic novel was that very little of the destruction in the final scene was caused by nimona herself - most of it was because of the soldiers shooting at her as she made her way to the statue. and then the director attempting to wipe out half the kingdom just to kill her. it really drives home how queerphobia is based on unfounded fears and how a society that vilifies us and mocks the value of diversity in general is only hurting itself.

another big change is nimona risking her life to save the kingdom from itself, a kingdom that always hated her (after one guy showed her there might be something worth saving). though i love the graphic novel's take on it too i think both endings are brilliant in different ways. to me it shows the shift in nd stevenson's work, from a story grounded in righteous anger when he was young and in the middle of processing a ton of trauma, to one that reflects a confidence about who he is and his place in the world as a bigender person fighting for justice. nimona saying "it's time to rewrite this story" is so fucking meta

lowering the social stigma of gender nonconformity also lowers the threshold of how bad people have to be suffering before they’re willing to discuss their feelings openly. I guarantee you that a TON of humans who felt vaguely alienated by/uncomfortable with their assigned gender have lived and died within a cisgender identity framework, because the enormous social cost of being honest just wasn’t worth it if they weren’t miserable. that was a bad thing!

letting people weigh their options for themselves without putting a thumb on the scale is freeing. so of course we’ve started hearing people discuss wildly unusual ways of experiencing gender. it does not matter whether the teenagers who made up the goofy-sounding new gender term you’re annoyed about end up being capital-T trans or not. it just matters that they feel safe talking about it, because everyone benefits from that. you cannot lower one threshold without lowering the other. this is a feature, not a bug. this is a good thing!

last week would have been the 58th birthday of bernard baran, who was imprisoned in 1984 at the age of 19 after a pair of parents failed to get him expelled from his position as a teacher's aide via a complaint about his uncloseted homosexuality and resorted to fabricating claims of pedophilia and sexual abuse. refusing a plea bargain for 5 years that demanded admission of guilt by maintaining his innocence, he received multiple life sentences and ultimately spent 21 years in prison. a scrawny boy of less than 100 pounds whose photo was published in the newspapers, he was beaten and sexually tormented, received threatening letters and a bounty was placed on his head. his conviction came in record time despite a total lack of evidence, countless contradictory and objectively impossible stories, and preschooler child witnesses outright asking for the "prize" they were "promised" after giving their testimony. his immediate appeal was denied, and afterwards his family was too poor to continue paying a lawyer. not a single lgbt organisation chose the side of a gay teenager being subjected to a kangaroo court in the middle of the satanic panic. ultimately, his release took until 2006, a few days after his 41st birthday, when a local advocacy group successfully proved the absurdity of his trial and the deliberate manipulation of evidence. he only got to live another 8 years in freedom, bearing mental and physical damage from years of abuse and negligent medical care. he needed a full set of new teeth to replace the ones that were punched out or broken and extracted. nevertheless, he enjoyed gardening and found work as a landscaper. his record has not been cleared to this day.

This is what pride is for.

Yes the parades are fun. That's not why we fight

Anyways remember that time that JK Rowling, who has never spoken to an indigenous American person in her whole life, was like "but what if the Natives had four schools and they were also bloodthirsty savages who started the residential schools with their fictional beings as their mascots and Christians weren't actually at fault" right at the time when we started getting some traction around getting recognition for the heinous crimes that were the mass graves of children, then went on to make a whole spin-off franchise in America using that """lore""" and rhetoric, where the one wizard guy who tried to stop the Holocaust from happening was villainized and played by Johnny Depp (who played Tonto in the Lone Ranger and said he was going to buy the Black Hills and Wounded Knee and "give it back to Lakota people" then never did that at all) and who she later defended as saying he wasn't a domestic abuser because she believed him over a woman who has since been proven to be telling the truth several times over?

The woman's a violent colonizer.

Hello <3 I deleted this original post but in light of the fact that there's a Twilight TV series reboot/spinoff in the making let's talk about how these women are one and the same in their actions against indigenous American people!

Stephenie Meyer is a Mormon with Mormon views. Mormons have extremely racist ideology embedded within their religious texts about indigenous Americans and Jews - that indigenous people are quite literally the Actual Real Jews (I'm mixed, this is truly insane cult rhetoric). Through the decades the LDS church has successfully funded, advocated, and carried out forced conversion and cultural genocide. THEY ARE THE ONES ACTIVELY TRYING TO OVERTURN ICWA, THE INDIAN CHILD WELFARE ACT.

Are you seeing the pattern here? Are you seeing the undercurrent of antisemitism and anti-indigenous racist imperialism?

Get rid of your attachment to these franchises, stop making it a question of what media you will replace it with, get involved with US. We want your allyship and understanding more than these white supremacists even want to think about your humanhood.

*taps the glass* hey, y'all know that what you might want isn't necessarily what's best to legislate?

Explanation:

- You cannot be judge, jury and executioner because the division of powers was created for a reason; to remain impartial and try to keep corruption to a minimum.

- Every single living person has human rights. Including the most evil people you could ever meet. Those people have a right to live, to get healthcare, to eat and to have a job. YES, even evil people.

I've seen a lot of people talk about abolishing prison, because it's the cool, new hip thing that everyone is talking about. And instead of understand what it means, they think it's the liberation of wrongfully imprisoned minorities - which it is. But also:

Prison abolition means setting up a system of psychological and physical help for the people whom are deemed dangerous to society. Yes, that includes Evil Fucking People. Recovery and rehabilitation should be the goal, not incarceration. THAT is abolishing prison.

Of course I want that abusive piece of shit father who abused his children to die. I want him dead! DEAD. But it does not mean that that's what I want as an official law, because as much as I'd love to see him dead, the betterment of society and the rehabilitation and development of a human fucking being is important.

The benefits to prison abolition are ENDLESS. But it is also a struggle, and y'all can't keep going through life with a 5 year old's justice mentality. I swear, fandom has rotted your fucking brains off, because we NEED ACTIVISTS. We NEED TO KNOW WHY WE WANT WHAT WE WANT, AND WHAT IT ENTAILS.

You believe in something? Look up the activists who are doing work there. Read up on it. Look up videos. Follow them on their social media. Work in your communities, if you've the opportunity.

And stop being so fucking stupid about abolishing human rights. You're doing the work for the far right when you call on all pedophiles to be executed on sight. Not even twenty years ago, gay people were mostly thought of as PEDOPHILES.

You see how this shit goes? Yeah?

Then figure yourself the fuck out.

“I really want that fucker to suffer, but I don’t want a society run by my worst impulses” is a really important moral principle that more people need to learn.
