In 4th grade, my bff was in a death feud over chess with a boy in our class but instead of competing like normal people they decided that the best way to determine who was chess master was for each of them to select one of the two biggest idiots in class and teach them to play chess, My Fair Lady style, and see whose idiot won. We are just now, 22 years later, grappling with the moral implications of this exercise.

the spectrum of political literacy on tumblr

Americans not giving a shit about the wildfires burning down forests and homes in Canada until smoke starts spreading across the border. Meanwhile Indigenous communities across the country are far more likely to be impacted by the fires and I’ve seen all of one link to a charity and about nine million memes. 🙃

The charity is based in Ottawa and accepts in-person donations as well:

Odawa Native Friendship Centre is collecting donations for First Nations community members that have recently been evacuated. Drop donations at Odawa's office at 815 St. Laurent Blvd. When donating online, choose "Wild Fire Evacuees". Miigwetch, Odawa.

This site has been going around Twitter trans accounts quite a bit lately, so just pointing out here too that it'll do fuck all, they're exploiting trans people at a time when hrt is particularly hard to access and please don't give them your money

fuckin exploitative bullshit marketed in the worst way imaginable

literally selling laxatives as weight loss supplements

Reminder that this is an obvious conservative/alt-right OP that is explicitly made to hurt trans women as much as possible by increasing their testosterone. The cruelty is the point. They're laughing at you. (Look at the "founder"'s photo on their website. It's an AI-generated black person with colored hair. A conservative's idea of what "muh libtards" look like. Additionally, they use their twitter feed to urge trans people and trans activists to share their whearabouts. This is an alt-right OP. Don't fall for it.

Additional info:

I did a whois on the domain. Of course all of the information of the registrants is hidden (pls note the Iceland address is NOT AFFILIATED, this is a known fake address used for privated information on whois lookups)... HOWEVER, look at the registration date. June 2nd. (This would indicate the date the domain was FIRST registered.) Let's look at the obviously fake reviews, shall we?

Would you look at that. There are fake reviews saying they've been on these pills for months, even though the site was just registered. How strange!

But wait, there's more.

Huh. June 1st, 2023.

Huh.

Huh!!!! Interesting!!!

But wait! What about the queerquirk site? Maybe they were selling it there first!

Nah. Shits maybe a week older than estrolabs.com. Their Twitter confirms this.

Please, if you're looking at this and thinking "eh, maybe people are being incendiary or touchy, maybe it's real" - here's hard evidence that it's bullshit. Do not fucking buy this shit.

it's poor form to air your petty grievances with someone when it comes out they did something actually bad. save that for companies, like when you learn duolingo removed kanji from its beginner's japanese courses as part of their collab with crunchy roll

duolingo is shit for japanese imo*, here are some apps i reccommend:

Hey Japan - comes with a cute shiba inu bc fuck that aggressive owl. its basically duolingo made specifically for japanese and much better at teaching you HOW the language works.

Kanji Study - its the grey one, made by one person. it covers the first 80 kanji plus the main radicals that make kanji up, PLUS hiragana and katakana FOR FREE. you can practice by drawing, flash cards, multiple choice, and you can decide whether you read or select the romanji/character/meaning. i learned hiragana in 5 days using this. the upgraded version (one time payment) with higher level kanji goes on sale a few times a year, consider supporting the app if you find it useful

Todai - more advanced but good for reading comprehension. japanese news in... japanese. highlights which JLPT level words are and gives percentages of each level for each article. has inbuilt dictionary to check words you dont know.

Takoboto - my preferred japanese dictionary but there are loads out there. i like it bc i can search in english, romanji, kana, or kanji and it breaks down kanji compounds into individual characters. it also shows different conjugations eg: to eat, eating, ate, to be able to eat, etc

those are just the phone apps i use, there are so many other resources out there that are free and not pulling bullshit like skipping one of the 3 'alphabets' of a language

*to be clear the reason i think duolingo is shit for japanese is that it doesnt follow the JLPT pathway. which... you dont NEED exactly, but i think the country that had to make a new, easier language profiency test bc not enough people were passing the existing one will know how to build courses that teach their language. plus duolingo is doing *gestures* whatever shit that is up top.

if you seriously want to learn japanese, memorise your kana (drop romanji asap or youll forever struggle and I'll come to kick your shins) and find the ebook of genki 1 that someone uploaded, or some other JLPT N5 course. but NOT duolingo.

Edit: just realised that duolingo may be your only real option if your first language isnt english (too easy for me to forget, sorry). in that case, make sure you supplement duolingo with your own kanji study!!!

This Discord Has Ghosts In It

It doesn't get talked about enough, but This Discord Has Ghosts In It is a rad example of how you can adapt game design to your surroundings.

Basically, This Discord Has Ghosts In It is a digital larp. It's Phasmophobia played by chat. Your group creates a discord server to function as a haunted house, then you all explore it, building new 'rooms' out of channels as you go.

Some players take the roles of ghosts, and are muted but can affect the environment in the haunted house.

Other players take the roles of explorers, and can talk, but the ghosts are all listening.

Discord wasn't built to be gamified this way, but that doesn't matter.

As long as you can guarantee consistent behavior from a thing, you can build mechanics off of it.

Anything in your environment can be turned into a game.

And in this particular case, it's a really good one!

The mechanics lend themselves well to the kinds of pacing, limited communication, and untrustworthy setting that any good ghost story needs.

Just in case you ever wondered, “Are the stupidest people on earth running it?”

I highly recommend watching this but paying attention to the face of the guy next to him he’s trying so hard to keep it together and not snap

Please know the hunting and fishing communities are having a BALL with this. My dad has sent me so many memes. Pretty sure he didn’t even know what memes were before this.

you’re really gonna say that and then not share the memes

one of my "special interests" in the past couple of years has been exploring fast fashion vs. slow fashion. it has been a long journey trying to find clothes that actually 1) fit me 2) look good 3) are made from material that is not actively shoving plastic in the ecosystem 4) involve ethical labor, fair trade, fairly compensated, etc

before i did this research, i really had no clue about fabrics or fashion brands. i used to think i had zero interest in fashion, in fact.

i grew up wearing walmart and thrift store clothes, and when i went to college i bought clothes from target and asos. something started to shift a little bit when i found vintage resellers on etsy and ebay... those clothes were so unique. but a lot of the vintage clothes were polyester blends, stiff, and would fall apart as easily as my asos clothes. i would leave them hanging in my closet and never wear them. i would wear the same old t shirts and jeggings every day. i felt like it was impossible to ever wear comfortable clothes, or ever feel good in clothes, so why bother?

it started with linen. linen is very comfortable and pretty sustainable. i was amazed that i didn't feel the urge to rip my clothes off when i wore linen. lightbulb number one.

a friend let me borrow a nooworks dress, and i went to the store and got some overalls. wow. overalls. lightbulb number two. holy shit, you can wear overalls. you know how people say "not binary or non-binary but a secret third thing." that's overalls.

i realized i loved the bonkers prints that nooworks had, and all of it was soft, and made ethically. it was a higher price point than i was used to, which gave me pause. but then you realize: we're not supposed to be buying dumb clothes every other weekend. and isn't a slightly higher price point for soft clothes that you won't want to tear off your body worth it?

so i started my research. i made a spreadsheet. the prices can be all over the place across brands, so i made a column for prices. sizes can be all over the place too -- people always ask me "where is the plus size slow fashion?" it's there. just look at the size column. people say "isn't it better to buy secondhand?" yeah, it is. i have many links to secondhand sources.

if you have any suggestions or additions please let me know, it is a living document.

update 6/2023: i added some stuff, deleted some stuff, and this spreadsheet is now huuuuuge! so i made some adjustments for better readability and use. i also added my lists of bags and backpacks so it's all in one place. remember the order of operations: resist buying on impulse, research and compare, trade / buy secondhand, and then, lastly, buy new if you have the $$$.

it’s so funny tht on here i’m like, mostly a normie while irl i’m consistently the weirdest person in the room at almost any given time. i’m like between two worlds., too normal for online but too weird for real life… i’m like junkrat from riverdale i don’t fit in
