PSA: journalists aren’t supposed to put names in the headlines if the person isn’t a public figure. It’s not a matter of maliciously not giving credit

^^^as a journalist, this is something that bothers me ALL THE TIME

A friend of mine on Twitter explained this the other day, so to elaborate based on what she said: If the name is not instantly recognizable the way a public figure is, then putting the name in the headline isn’t going to bring about any sort of recognition or connection in the reader, and doesn’t do much to draw the reader into the story. But something like “local teen” does create a connection by tying the person into the community, and encourages the reader to learn more about what this local teen has done. The name will be in the article itself, after the headline has done its job at getting the reader to look into it.

It’s worth noting too that usually, according to the Inverted Pyramid writing style used for journalism where the most important information is shared first, the person’s name is usually in the first sentence of the first paragraph.

Whenever I see someone get up at arms over a headline that says “Local Teen” and the first comment is “SAY THEIR NAME” I’m always like “hey, thanks for telling every journalist present that you don’t read articles and just skim headlines.” Really makes us feel appreciated.

I think this Onion headline illustrates the point pretty well

A lot of hardline pro-lifers really do believe their bullshit. They don’t believe a pregnant woman should want an abortion, even if the pregnancy will kill her, because they deeply believe a mother should be willing to die for their child, and they see the pregnancy as a child. That’s both a sign of how little they value women, but it’s also partly how heavily they buy into the dehumanizing mythology of The Mother.

Yes, there is a lot of horrible misogyny that goes into the prolife movement, and that can’t be understated. They believe that pregnancy is a punishment for sex, the consequence they just need to suck up and deal with.

But that’s not enough! They need to be a mother and therefore a martyr. They want her to be redeemed through sacrifice, to die trying, no matter how incompatible with life the pregnancy is.

And they want her to die with a bloody smile—and even better, as the newborn miraculously survives, a gift from God and The Mother, both of whom knew better than the arrogant, Godless, secular Doctor.

There is no logical debate or good enough reason that will get through to someone whose that hardline pro-life because they see a woman wanting to live instead of dying a martyr as a moral failing, as a sin.

So ive had this saved in my drafts for a while now- but theres a point id like to make about butch/femme identity and expression and think this is ready despite the crap i might catch for it

On my days off and when i go out for fun, lots of times i look like this vvv

And other times, especially because im a blue collar dyke, i look like this vvv

The thing that both these photos have in common is that, regardless of how i may appear, i am a femme lesbian. I am not magically butch at work just because i have to wear jeans and work boots for safety. On the clock I am often mistaken for a man and harassed for using the women’s bathroom, people call me sir and damn near keel over trying to correct themselves. I understand that people will look at me as masculine because im in a mans trade.

And yet im still a femme!

You know why? Because being femme is not about how i dress or how long my hair is or the job i work or the body im in, but who i am, how i love, and how i want to be loved back. Its my reclamation of my gender and sexuality and romantic life.

Theres this idea that femme lesbians are “the girl” lesbians and butches are “the boy” lesbians. Femmes are stereotyped as straight passing hyper feminine (and often times cis) girls. But if youve ever met a femme thats not always (in my experience- USUALLY) the case. We often are nonbinary (hi! Also me!) and/or gender nonconforming even in our femininity- taking the things that cishet society hates the most in women (ie body hair/body fat/masculine jobs/deep booming voices- etc) and owning those characteristics in ways that make us feel free and most like femmes 💕

I personally feel most comfortable being feminine off the clock and covering myself in glitter and being a tacky fat furry muppet because its how i feel best recognized by the butches i adore so much! But i get to reclaim womanhood or whatever adjacent, gender-fucked, lesbiany, thing ive got going on, and that doesn’t change when i wear jeans and work boots.

Femmes get to be whatever the hell we want- being broad shouldered and deep voiced and fat and furry and in a trade are not traits that magically make me incapable of being femme- and im over this whole ordeal where y’all assign butches and femmes as either “the boy” or “the girl” of the relationship and expect us to be exclusively feminine or masculine and never cross or mix- just recreating useless gender roles that we have zero reason to uphold.

(And this goes the absolute same for butches/studs who express feminine traits and DOUBLE for trans butches/studs/femmes)

Accidentally bought my cat cantrip instead of catnip and now she’s casting eldritch blast at me from the overlook of her cat tree while demanding wet food only

Thanks YouTube this seems really normal

Okay, so I took the time to watch the video in its entirety, and it’s actually well-done, informative, and the host himself is Jewish. My impression going in was that it was PROBABLY going to be a deconstruction of antisemitic tropes and such, paired with an actual explanation for why Jewish people as a demographic DO actually perform at an above-average level economically compared to most other groups, statistically speaking, and… yep, that’s exactly what it is. 🤷‍♂️

For instance, he goes into detail about how easily the biggest reason for the above-average success of Jews in general is their emphasis and value of education as a people, and delves into how the stereotype of Jews being heavily involved in banking and financing literally arose from antisemitic laws and such in the middle ages, wherein Jewish people were barred from most jobs and what industry there was… but WERE allowed to run banks, keep books and ledgers, and lend money, because it’s something they happened to be very good at… again, due to the high value placed on education, as compared to most other peoples in Europe at the same time. There’s a lot more points he touches on, of course, but it’s too much for me to get into here.

Anyway, TL;DR - It’s actually an interesting, informative video, hosted by a Jewish man, but maybe could’ve been titled better, because especially in these times, it’s understandable that someone could see a video like this come up and be suspicious as to what the content/motivations are going to be.

Just as another example of the actual intent behind this channel, here’s another video from them that goes into a lot of detail about the differences between the two largest Jewish diaspora populations; Ashkenazi and Sephardi.

In this video alone, there’s so much that I honestly never knew about Jewish history and culture, such as the fact that there’s a language called “Ladino,” which is a mixture of Hebrew and Spanish, in the same way that Yiddish is a mixture of Hebrew and German. Did you know this? I absolutely did not.

Again, I get why the title and thumbnail of the original video could raise eyebrows, but Unpacked is actually a channel dedicated to educating people about Jewish history, culture, religion, food and other points of interest.

So they’re doing counterprogramming and taking advantage of the sorts of video titles and thumbnails that people click on YouTube? Cool.
