Great Mouse Detective version of Dracula happening simultaneously as the events of Dracula, so there’s just five mice in Victorian clothes unnoticed by the human cast desperately trying to kill a bat.
Or they’re also trying to kill Dracula, but exclusively during the parts of the book when he’s turned into a bat.
Dracula invited a human realtor and a mouse realtor to his castle and there were extended periods of time where he would say to his human realtor “Ah please excuse me I have business to attend to” and turn into a bat to talk to his mouse realtor.
With the recent Tumblr announcement, we have decided to create a dedicated twitter account for the VN. Updates will still occur on this blog until it gets shuts down (if it does).
If you have twitter, we highly suggest you follow the twitter account for updates, just in case!
Book Mail is the Best Mail!!!!! & Pre-Orders are Awesome!!!!
Lies Sleeping (Rivers of London #7) by Ben Aaronovitch has arrived!!!!!!!!
I accidentally ordered the wrong size paperback, but what’s another non-matching book in an already diverse collection?
I plan to reread both The Furthest Station & The Hanging Tree before I start book #7 so no spoilers on my blog just yet. I’ll tag everything with #Lies Sleeping Spoilers when the time comes.
So like, @pushthequorumbutton or @quorumcreations and I ( @blinkingkills )
are working on a Kazumaji Visual novel. so here is the preview of some art that is going to be in it. Majima has way too many costumes i don’t know why i did this to myself, but whatever.
Anyway I got in the fandom too late to join the fanzine so instead Kat and I will churn out a visual novel in a month. This is probably a bad idea, but give us a follow for project updates and you’ll hopefully get to see it when its done.
We’ll be looking for playtesters in a couple of weeks so keep an eye out!
oh right its also very nsfw.
kiryu probably has nightmares like this

Google could launch an effort to keep trolls and bad information at bay, with a program that would rank websites according to veracity, and sort results according to those rankings. Currently, the search engine ranks pages according to popularity, which means that pages containing unsubstantiated celebrity gossip or conspiracy theories, for example, show up very high.
DO IT GOOGLE
DO IT
FUCKING DO IT
DO IT
This feels like the moment when Han Solo comes roaring back in the Millennium Falcon and knock’s Darth Vader out of commission to give Luke a clear run at the Death Star exhaust port. “Yeahoo!”
DO IT, FULFILL YOUR CORPORATE MISSION AND ‘DON’T BE EVIL’
in theory this concept is good and something along these lines clearly needs to be done (whether it’s just a brute assignment of all sites with known alt-right ties to a weight of 0 in the rankings) but i have a number of concerns about the implementation of a ‘truth ranking’:
- this would require a massive AI program - either something new or a retooling of something that already exists. probably it would have to be different in scope to anything that’s been made before
- the last time one of google’s AI programs was in the news it was very bad (antiblack racism cw)
- machine learning ethics is nowhere near being able to tackle a “truth algorithm”. this article - particularly the first two sections, which tackle specific intelligence rather than AIs that attempt to replicate human sentience/sapience - is a dense but good read about the ethical challenges surrounding machine learning.
- the author lays out the criteria “responsibility, transparency, auditability, incorruptibility, predictability, and a tendency to not make innocent victims scream with helpless frustration” as requirements for an ethical AI. google is not known for transparency & auditability when it comes to their algorithms
- the author of the article sums up the challenge of building an ethical AI with ‘Imagine an engineer having to say, “Well, I have no idea how this airplane I built will fly safely—indeed I have no idea how it will fly at all … —but I assure you, the design is very, very safe.”’ (pg 5 of the article) – he’s talking about a human-like AI, but – building something that takes in information on its own, decides its own qualifications, etc. doesn’t seem like the type of thing one should entrust “truth” to without serious study & peer review.
i’m not an expert in this but my jobs in the past have depended heavily on google’s search algorithms in all their vagrancies, and i do a lot of reading on tech ethics and machine learning. and to me a “truth algorithm” – even a well-intentioned one – sounds… bad.
on a lighter note, here is something good google is doing: google goes after bad ads and bad sites that profit from them (wired). concrete step, measurable impact, etc. i also recommend using the search engine duck duck go, which doesn’t track your searches.

if you donate to ACLU, tweet your receipt to Sia and she will match it up to 100k.
if you donate to CAIR, tweet your receipt to grimes and she will match it up to 10k
please add on other people/celebrities/whoever that are doing this so everyone can make the most of their donations!
