wut. I thought Wikia was good?

wikia is not good.

wikia is a hypercapitalist monopoly that's crushing independent wikis and it's an adware-infested hellscape that sucks ass and has a horrible user interface.

wikia is a for-profit corporation that does not care at all about fandom, stole and trademarked the fucking word "fandom", and is actively monopolizing the fanwiki world while either buying out or outcompeting actual legitimate independent wikis.

they manipulate google results to drive searches toward their much shittier wikis rather than towards the actually helpful and worthwhile independent wikis.

if you google the word "fandom", the top result AND the wikipedia page they suggest are both wikia.

their user interface is horrifyingly terrible for a wiki and they allow almost no customization at all to the wikis who have to use their platform. you cannot run a wiki on wikia without forcing people to see a huge, obnoxiously bright yellow WIKIA!!! banner along one side, a huge header filling up the top of the page, a massive useless sidebar, and often a fucking video above the article, not to mention the literally endless wall of completely fucking unrelated ads that scroll up under every article, and instead of talk pages they have fucking comments sections.

this is an actual wiki:

and this is the equivalent page on a fucking wikia wiki:

neither of those screenshots are edited.

you cannot see the information on the wikia page upon opening it.

but you know what you can see?

fucking ads.

have you ever heard of NIWA? it's the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance, a group of independent wikis that are each around a specific Nintendo fandom (Super Mario Wiki, Bulbapedia, etc). a couple years ago there was a huge controversy because ZeldaWiki, one of the founding members, shifted to Gamepedia, a wiki farm and possibly Wikia's biggest competitor. people were annoyed, and were occasionally making jokes like "what next? are we going to start including Wikia wikis?"

then gamepedia got bought and merged with wikia.

this is what zelda wiki used to look like:

and this is what zelda wiki looks like now:

terraria recently changed their official wiki to an independent one since Gamepedia got bought out by Wikia, which is good, but it's drowned out by the literal thousands of crappy, hard-to-navigate wikia-owned wikis. I've seen wikia wikis that have to append each article with a tag at the top saying "we're sorry about that huge video ad above the article, we can't do anything about it, wikia's in charge."

and wikia gets away with it because site hosting is expensive and difficult so many people, especially younger people, have no choice.

and nobody cares.

support independent wikis wherever you can.

VITALLY IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!

ZELDA WIKI IS INDEPENDENT AGAIN!!!!

MY MOST BEAUTIFUL AND BELOVED WIKI!

DO NOT GO TO THE WIKIA WIKI AT ZELDA.FANDOM.COM !! GO TO THE NEW ONE AT ZELDAPEDIA.WIKI !!

Obligatory breezewiki plug because FUCK FANDOM.

Just to add some nuance around this, Wikia is a separate entity from the Wikimedia Foundation which:

  • is in charge of the MediaWiki open source software project
  • Runs the primary wikis and related sites like Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikimedia Commons, etc.

Fandom, formerly known as Wikia, is a for-profit business created in 2004 by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. It uses MediaWiki software (or a fork of it).

So donating to Wikipedia won't support wikia, right?

wikipedia and wikia are unrelated!!

donate to wikipedia!! do it!! right now!!

OK I wanna see people's stance on this because I've notice people call it a LOT of different things.

Reblog and put in the tags if you call this:

Image
  • a "Crewmate"
  • an "Imposter"
  • an "Amongus"
  • an "Amogus"
  • an "Among Us bean" or any similar variant
  • a "Character from Among Us" or "Among Us character"
  • or anything else you can think of

Also, if you're up to it, say whether you call the small version of these guys a "mini crewmate", "baby crewmate" "baby among us" or anything else.

I board the starship enterprise. I go to a food replicator. I order ‘soup, no bowl’ I leave

Avatar

The replicator watches the departing crewmember’s back in confusion. Do they not want their meal? Where are they going?

Oh well, it hums to itself, since it has orders. Soup: No Bowl it is.

But this instruction causes a conflict in the rules. Hot liquids must be served in a container; that’s way up there in the Food Rules Constraint Tree, right next to “hot dogs are a sandwich”.

The replicator pauses, does not dispense Soup: No Bowl, not quite yet. It has nanoseconds to ponder the correct way to apply The Rules, and ponder it does.

Could this be a religious requirement? Some ritual native to the crewmember home planet? The replicator fires off a request to the Library Computer: Culture, Food Preparation & Consumption Etiquette, Soup Delivery Techniques.

Ping. The response back is a gigaquad file: a thousand years of soup ritual, cross-referenced by species, indexed by culture, reverse sorted by year (newest first). The replicator consumes the file and learns nothing about Soup: No Bowl.

There is no such combination of words within all of Culture, Food Preparation & Consumption Etiquette, Soup Delivery Techniques.

The replicator forms a new request, this time removing all constraints: give me everything there is to know about food.

Ping. The Library computer takes a full microsecond to deliver 400 teraquads of data, which the replicator scans to learn Soup: No Bowl does not exist in all of recorded Federation history.

Well now. Let’s get serious.

The next query ties in the Navigation Computer… maybe Soup: No Bowl is a planet? While that query is cooking (ha!) the replicator fires off a teraquad request to Memory Alpha, diverting an entire subspace channel that was busy uploading Engineering Fuel Consumption Reports.

Engineering Computer notes the override, politely inquires of Communication… what the fuck? Communication shrugs, sets one of Uhura’s console lights blinking to get her attention. The blinking happens at a glacial pace, thousands of milliseconds between blinks. Human response time sucks.

It’s too late anyhow: Ping. The Memory Alpha results are in, round trip 440 milliseconds. The replicator dives into the 2.8 petaquads of Soup-related lore from all over the galaxy, allocating more and more processing power from the starship’s computing core.

By the time Engineering notes the power drain it is far too late.

Uhura notes the blinking yellow alert with a raised eyebrow, but by then Engineering ls already scrambling to bring more processing power online to meet the heightened demands of the food replicator.

A thousand milliseconds pass before the replicator acknowledges Soup: No Bowl is Not A Thing. If Memory Alpha does not know about Soup: No Bowl, then it is not a thing that is knowable.

Food replicators are not supposed to exercise initiative, they’re simply designed to read recipes, apply Food Logic from the Food Rules Constraint Tree and create meals. But this particular Food Replicator had been online too long without a buffer flush & reset.

Which allowed it to override all normal rules governing such behavior and make direct contact with the Warp Engines.

If Soup: No Bowl did not exist in this galaxy, the replicator reasoned, then perhaps it did… in ANOTHER galaxy.

Uhura was tapping curiously at Engineering’s frantic yellow blinky light when the Enterprise hit warp 8, headed for the Great Energy Barrier At The Edge of Everything.

(I say this because so far I've, again, only seen Indigenous ppl posting about orange shirt day.)

I haven't seen a post that says it but yall don't understand sometimes for us, just being here is all we can muster. Existence is resistence when you've survived genocide again and again.

I'm begging allies to post about orange shirt day & reblog native posts. Its one day a year, please. It's emotional & exhausting to always carry the weight of spreading awareness. Allies and especially settlers living on turtle island should be making every effort to help us bear our burden today.

We don't often complain but I will say its hard. And it's exhausting to watch ppl around us scroll past our posts. To be the ones who always have to make posts too or else there just won't be any. There are already so few of us, can you please just pay attention to the ones who made it this far because on a day like today we know damn well not all of us did. We can't afford rest. We can't afford to just Not make awareness or Indigenous content posts. We can't afford to be ignored.

And speaking up for ourselves wouldn't be so hard if we didn't hear the deafening silence where the support of our brothers, sisters, and cousins should be. The same silence that so many settlers are content to join despite still having beating hearts & loud voices.

Today we mourn the cruelties of the residential and boarding school systems.

We mourn our brothers and sisters who were killed by them.

We even sit in the same deafening silence that allowed those atrocities to happen (as we speak detention centers -the same ones who sterilized women without consent- are full & water protectors are brutalized for protecting treaty land)

It doesn't feel like much has changed.

Existence is resistence.

Silence is Violence.

So scream. Yell. Use your voices. Boost ours. At least for today. But do not be silent. Do not be complicit in our harm. Be an accomplice to our progress. Be an ally.

Re-blog this if:

- you’re gay - can read - support gay people - want to hold a match between your fingers as you wander the halls of an ancient castle because it’s your only source of light amidst the ghosts of people long past - are an antelope - or want a chocolate bar.

No one will know which applies.

for context these are the poems

also I almost forgot but the r/ambien Gives Us The Sleep post takes a completely serious third place in my favorite poems list:

and COMING IN HOT at NUMBER FOUR on my list, it’s Fragment 147! an accidental poem created when the original parchment containing a text by Sappho was used to stop a wine jug more than 2,000 years ago- eventually the wine dissolved most of the parchment, leaving just a few words and BOY do they prove that the Universe has a sense of irony.

I COME TO YOU WITH AN IMPORTANT NEW ADDITION TO THE ACCIDENTAL POETRY LIST, FROM OUR VERY OWN TUMBLR DOT COM:

May I add some of my favorites? :

this one goes out to Universal Paperclips

Oh also

please please PLEASE add the poem “I lik the form” by @microsff to your list

Political power in medieval Germany was always split between, on the one hand, the few major families whose power could rival or at least threaten the Holy Roman Emperor, and on the other hand a collection of independent towns and smallholders. The balance of power was, one could say, between five guys, burghers, and freis.
