The flushable toilet was invented in 1596 by Sir John Harrington for Queen Elizabeth I. But it took 250+ yrs to catch on. In medieval Europe, toilets were often just holes in the ground or chamber pots. The wealthy had "garderobes" in castles - rooms with toilets connected to the ground via shafts.
