Listen, this is serious.

Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!

It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.

Like, it’s literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.

So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?

Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.

Oh, and while we’re talking about books, if you’ve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely don’t go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately they’re completely free.

Certain words can change your brain forever and ever so you do have to be very careful about it.

I was speaking with a friend one day when the subject came of what an ideal romance would look like.

He said that he liked the idea of marrying a childhood sweetheart, someone shy and sweet who needed him. He said he liked the idea of being needed, being relied on, being the guiding hand in a crowd, the active participant to introduce new experiences.

I thought about his answer, and said, "I don't think I want to be needed. Being needed means being kept around from necessity, even without affection. I think I'd rather be wanted, by someone outgoing and independent, who can live their life without me but chooses not to."

He didn't like mine, and I didn't like his, and so we disagreed, and talked about something else.

It is worth mentioning, I think, that he was a youngest child, and a boy, in his family, where I was the oldest, a girl, in mine.

And it's pure conjecture, but I think that for him, living the life of the youngest boy- treated as small, reliant, superfluous- it makes sense to desire being vital, needed, and looked up to.

And for myself, growing up the oldest girl- treated as a tool with a function, vital and needed but not particularly wanted- it makes sense that this would be my greatest fear, to be trapped, needed, required, but not desired.

I think we both are valid in wanting what we want. But I can't help but feel my skin crawl, just a little, imagining a partnership where I couldn't walk away. Where someone needed a hand to hold theirs, any hand at all, and not just mine- not because mine felt different.

It's interesting how we can be friends, I think. Interesting how each of our fantasies are the other's nightmares.

I think it's important to remember, as a rule of thumb, if you take advantage of a social service, it actually makes it easier for other people who need that service to access it. Most of the time, when these services get cut, it's because politicians will look at usage and say "see, no one is really using this thing, we can afford to trim the budget for food stamps by at least half". Whereas if you decide to step up and use these programs, even if you feel like you "don't really need it", at bare minimum it's another data point advocates can use to say "hey, look, people are using this thing, this is an important service we are providing, do not cut our funding".

Also, this is kind of a separate but related issue: don't wait until you're literally in debt with no food in the fridge and rent due in a week to look for help. You'd be surprised how many programs are at your disposal. Hell, I just found out to qualify for low-income housing assistance, you only need to make 80% less than the state's median income. (Spoiler: we make waaaay less than 80%.)

Stop thinking of yourself as temporarily embarrassed middle-class. If you're poor, you're poor. Check online, check your local library, get some help. Don't wait until you're on death's door to learn this stuff.
