The knife requires a clear picture of the target in your mind. A name can't work. So if you killed Jeff Bezos it cannot be traced back to you. Anyone else could use it if they got a hold of it.
Just to be clear the reason the knife does not come back is because it would be OP. Like how the death note is. The trade off is if you keep it nearby you can almost always get it back. If you choose to use it to assassinate someone you cannot reach, then the person dies, but you lose the knife.
And besides, a single death at the right time is enough to change the world
The more i think about this the more im convinced the gloves are the best option. Assuming you have control over the melting you could use it to reform or weld metal whenever you need to and you can just melt through any metal locks you can touch.
