Hi! thanks for hanging out :)

48hr tumblr blackout proposal

tumblr mobile has seadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.

examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it "working"), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the 'for you' page.

the demands of the protest would be along the lines of:

  • reverse the recent image viewer update
  • scrap the new users 'for you' page default setting
  • let us turn off tumblr live indefinitely
  • increase efforts against spam / porn bots
  • make reporting abuse and hate speech as easy as reporting as reporting spam
  • let us go nuts show nuts again... for real this time
  • commit to improving usability and accessibility, and listening to users!
  • (suggestions welcome!)

to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don't use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.

I suggest the 48 hours between the 30th of June to the end of the 1st of July.

this marks the end of pride month (for the "queerest place on the internet") and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).

tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).

i can't afford to blaze this post so please spread it around as much as possible! protests only work if significant numbers show up!

tumblr rejected the blaze campaigns for this post because they know it would hurt them. let's make this an indefinite blackout - it's the best way to get results.

(so the blackout would be from June 30th onwards)

how do you keep track of what would be in character for a character? how do you determine if x thing is something y character would do? how do you decide that?

Interesting question! My first reflex is to say "I just do," but that's not incredibly helpful.

I write character-driven, which means when I'm setting up and playing out story stuff I'm constantly checking on how every character is feeling. This is, in my experience, the most important factor for determining what is and isn't in character, because "in character" is a very situational assessment. An incredibly patient, kind person can still snap if they're upset enough. A guarded, untrusting person can open up if they hit a particular kind of breaking point. So if I want to have something specific happen that doesn't feel like it's within the range of normal characterization, the question becomes "what state do I have to get these guys in to make this action make sense to them?"

Beyond that, it's not really a logical process I can break down. I just have the characters in my head, and sometimes when I put them in a situation they act in ways I wasn't expecting or nix things I wanted them to do. They each have an internal logic that responds differently to things. It's usually a matter of rotating them around until I figure out how they fit best.

alright so during into the spider-verse's introduction to peter b. parker, we see his wedding, and he stomps on the wine glass right? this is a jewish wedding tradition, which makes this version of peter parker jewish (further confirmed in interviews -- however, i believe this is enough by itself). it's a nice nod to the jewish roots of the character.

we get to see a bunch of peter parkers throughout the spider-verse films, and none of them have any explicit religious associations like peter b. parker. except for one!

here we have gwen stacy's peter parker and aunt may, from earth-65, saying grace over a meal. from my understanding, this is generally a christian practice -- in judaism, we prefer to say short prayers before eating, and save the long, in-depth ones for afterwards. so to me, this was a clear example of the character being coded as christian. i was a little disappointed that they didn't make peter parker jewish here too, but since across the spider-verse discusses variants and the differences between instances of the same person between different universes, i interpreted this as a continued commentary on peter parker's ethnicity -- although he was initially jewish-coded and one of his two creators, stan lee, is jewish, this is often erased, especially in more modern interpretations of the character.

and then i remembered that this peter parker also literally turns into the lizard.

and y'know what? good call on that one guys.

I would climb down there like a lizard and the magma wouldn’t hurt me

That's not lava, sorry. This isn't in Þingvellir, this is a display at the earthquake exhibition in Hveragerði. That's a line of plastic lights in a crack that opened up during the 2008 earthquake. It's in a shopping center. This is what it looks like from another angle

The fault in Þingvellir looks like this

The fault at Sandvík is closer together and looks like this

There isn't any lava visible from the surface continental divides currently but when there was a fissure eruption nearby Sandvík a few years ago at Fagradalsfjall, it looked like this

He said he burned his ass and got frostbite everywhere else taking this picture

It's a difficult choice, but I think this might be my favourite Tumblr thread of all time :)

some fools be like “i play games to escape my responsibilities” then pick tank or healer

in my greatest fantasies i am able to help people

In my fantasies I can prevent people from being hurt, even if it means I get hurt in their stead.

In my fantasies i dont have to know how to aim
