as a huge lover of birds, 90% of the concern against wind turbines being used for energy is literally just pro fossil fuel propaganda. birds ARE at a risk however there is a lot of strategies even as simple as painting one of the blades that reduces a lot of accidental deaths. additionally renewable energy sources will do more in favor of the environment that would positively impact birds (and all of us). one study found over one million bird deaths from wind turbines. while that is a shockingly high number and we should work to drastically shrink it, at least 1.3 billion birds die to outdoor cats on a yearly basis. it was never about caring about birds

i’m so serious when i say excessive fear of being annoying/creepy/taking up people’s energy etc holds us back. it seems like it’s just little things but they add up. over the past month i’ve ordered food and drinks almost exclusively by asking “do you have a favorite?” and i know if i said that on twitter or wherever ppl would dogpile me for demanding emotional labor of servers or w/e but every single person i’ve asked has seemed genuinely psyched to answer! i don’t ask if it’s busy obvi, and use a phrasing that gives them the easy out of “i don’t have one”— but no one has taken it! the girl at the cafe confessed to me with something like conspiracy in her voice how everybody raves about the gluten free chocolate chip cookies and sure, they’re great, but the delicious, fluffy homemade waffles are RIGHT THERE. the barbera the bartender recommended was actually kind of awful but it broke the ice and we ended up talking for like 45 minutes. the bodega guy declared that he usually makes himself a burger but tonight was “a breakfast sandwich night” and tbh he was totally right. it WAS a breakfast sandwich night

Deliberate ADHD Medicine Shortage!!

If you have ADHD and you take a stimulant based medication like Adderall or Ritalin, you may have had trouble over the last year or so getting your medication due to a shortage in supply. I recently ran into this problem when I ordered my meds from our mail order pharmacy.

This problem has been going on for a while, but it wasn't until I got the notification from my pharmacy that anyone has explained WHY there's a shortage, and the answer has me absolutely hissing with rage.

It's a shortage manufactured by the US government.

This was the letter I received from the pharmacist:

Am I surprised? Not at all. Am I engaged? ALWAYS.

This isn't being discussed because no one ever explains the medication shortages. They tell you at the pharmacy that its a supply issue, so you just assume it's the same supply issues that have been cropping up ever since the beginning of the pandemic in the US. And while that's part of the picture, the government restricting the supply of pharmaceutical ingredients is adding violent insult to injury.

Think this is awful? Good, because it is. Want to do something about it? Cool, call/email/write/fax/telegram your representatives telling them that this is unacceptable. Here is a short phone script, and a slightly longer letter template.

My name is [your full name] and I live in zip code [zip code]. As a constituent of [insert rep here] and on behalf of the 15.6 million Americans with ADHD, I demand that you address the DEA's restrictions on stimulant medications and work to have them removed. Misdiagnosis of ADHD is not solved by punishing those who have it. Residents of [insert state or voting district here] deserve full access to the medications they need to live their best lives.

Here's the email/letter::

Dear [representative],

I have recently learned that there is a severe shortage of ADHD medication due to the DEA restricting the supply of active the pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that are used to make these medications. This action is appalling and unnecessarily penalizes neuroatypical Americans. Restricting this medication doesn't reduce inappropriate prescribing, it just means that those people who need the medication to function at full capacity are struggling to find places to get their necessary prescriptions filled.

As a constituent of [insert rep here] and on behalf of the 15.6 million Americans with ADHD, I demand that you address this issue and put pressure on the DEA to lift restrictions on stimulant medications. Misdiagnosis of ADHD is not solved by punishing those who have it. Residents of [insert state or voting district here] deserve full access to the medications they need to live their best lives.

I know there's a lot going on in the world right now, and many of us are just completely overwhelmed (ironically, especially if you have ADHD), but problems at home don't disappear in times of global crisis. If you can find the time and spoons to contact one of your reps, I hope to make it as easy as possible.

Pro-tip for my fellow phone call haters - I've always heard it said that phone calls are more effective than emails or letters, though I have no idea why. An easy way to make a phone call to your reps is to do it after hours and leave a voicemail. You get to calmly read off your statement and don't have to worry about talking to some random intern manning the phone lines.

If nothing else, please boost this so that folks with ADHD know why the hell we can't get our meds.
