biyuti publishing

@publishbiyuti / publishbiyuti.tumblr.com

biyuti publishing is a platform for twoc/qtpoc voices.

I started biyuti publishing mostly as a way to self publish some of my writing and, well, it kind of snowballed from there as other twoc asked if I could help them. I wanted to.

The interest and responses I got from people made it clear that twoc needed a platform to be heard. A place where we could publishing something other than memoirs.

This platform is still needed.

I just can’t be the one to provide it, as much as I’d love to.

There were a lot of things I wanted to do, regarding how to run biyuti publishing. I quickly realized that, well, what I wanted to do was impossible in a capitalist system.

At the very beginning, I insisted that people were compensated for their labour. Certainly not as much as they were worth and what they deserved but something. I also wanted writers to reap the whole benefits of their labour, which is why there was a 100% royalty policy.

It’s funny (but not). I tried my best to mainly work with twoc (or trans poc). The biggest barrier with this was… everyone was poor and working too hard. Very little energy or time to work for what, frankly, wasn’t enough money. It’s a cycle that feeds itself.

I honestly hated trying to run a business. I didn’t want to think about profits and all that stuff. I especially hated the reality that it truly impossible to run an ethical business in a capitalist system. No matter what I tried, someone’s labour was going to be exploited. Since I refused to push that on anyone else, I was that that someone.

This was, in a way, supposed to be less of a traditional publishing operation and more as a way to guide twoc through self-publishing. It’s why I picked pressbooks as the backbone for the site. It was supposed to do the hard work of book layouts.

In reality, I ended up being a site manager, book editor, graphic designer, and book designer. With some other stuff. Ultimately, publishing what books we did required a great deal of uncompensated labour on my part. At a time in my life when I was struggling with money and disability.

As time went on, my disabilities became harder to manage, as well as acquiring a brand new one that involved chronic pain. I was struggling to hold down my day job, much less having the capacity for extra, uncompensated work. At this point, I’m on disability and unable to do work of any kind. Even as I write this, my head is throbbing and I’m having trouble focusing.

I tried to hold on for as long as possible, particularly as I’d been working on a particular project that is super important.

But… I just can’t.

So… there you have it. Why we haven’t published anything in years and why this project failed.

I’ve cancelled the membership system. It never generated a huge amount of money to begin with. What money is left will be used to pay the hosting costs for the website, so that it can stay up.

By the way, all the money we make from sales of the anthology is being dividedly evenly between the twelve contributors to the anthology, which we’re distributing in monthly payments. Each of our contributors has already received a payment of about $130 USD from copies sold in the first month after the book’s release. This money not only helps us survive, it also serves as an acknowledgement of the importance of our stories and our work.

Please keep spreading the word about anthology, so we can afford to live and continue our work as writers.

Luna Merbruja has moved from her internship position to a book editor with biyuti publishing! Yay!

Luna is the author of Trauma Queen, a performance artist, and a co-coordinator of the 2014 International TWOC Network Gathering. She is also currently pursuing a career in trauma therapy.

Additionally, she facilitates writing workshops across North America through a poetic and prose lens. She has a background in poetry and memoir writing, and had the recent honor of reading Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha’s upcoming memoir, Dirty River, to check for political content and to give editorial feedback.

Luna focuses on offering content feedback, copy editing, and ensuring that what is published follows social justice principles in being non-oppressive.

Do you all think Biyuti Press would publish the first section of my book?  It’s about forty pages, and so is Morgan’s collection of poetry.  And if they did, what’s a good price for forty short pages?  I feel like three dollars is okay, but IDK.  I mean, some stories are only a paragraph long and others are a couple of pages so IDK.

I really wanted to wait til this book was done and publish it all together, but, as always, I need the money.  :/

What do you think?

I would totally do this, just so you know. I'm not very concerned with following 'traditional' notions of format and publishing. We should really talk.

I think what I might do is try to fundraise a book on Inkshare.  Since both Inkshare and Biyuti Press are non-exclusive I could also publish/distribute through Biyuti. (Right?  I’m understanding that right, aren’t I?)  The only problem would be that the last time I checked I would have to fundraise about nine thousand dollars on Inkshare.

The book I want to do this with is “Sun City Stories”, Mexican-American retellings of fairy tales.  (I could just add ‘Chivelita’ into this book, I think it would fit.) Do you all think this would be possible?

Yes! Publishing with biyuti publishinig is non-exclusive. Or, rather, because all authors retain their copyrights, the book is exclusive to _you_ and you allow us to host it/distribute it.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Hello!

My name is Maria Andazola and I’m a TransLatina writer.  Jamie (desdeotromar), who is also a TransLatina wrier, and I are putting together an anthology of short fiction by TransLatinas.  We’re currently looking for contributing writers and two editors (though the number of editors is subject to increase depending on the number of writers who send work), and we are giving priority to Afro-Latin@ writers and editors.  We ask that you only submit a piece for one of these positions, so that as many people as possible can participate.

We understand that many people who are interested may be new to writing, unsure of themselves, or only have partially completed work, and as such we are committed to working with writers to assist them in developing their stories.  If your work is incomplete or unpolished, we will do what we can to help you edit it.

We would also like to encourage submissions of stories or excerpts of longer fiction that has been self-published or posted to a personal blog, as long as it hasn’t been otherwise published in a magazine/journal/book before.  This is because we are also aware that there are many writers who have completed work, but have been unable to find a publisher.

Submissions will be open for two weeks, starting today, April 1st, and closing April 15th.  We will try to be flexible about submissions sent after the deadline, but our ability to respond to these submissions will depend on the number of works sent to us during our reading period.

Once submissions are closed, we will take three weeks to edit the stories and format the book; and we will publish digital copies of this anthology by the end of April.

In terms of payment, royalties from sales of the book will be divided evenly between the designer, editors, and contributing writers each month.

(Guidelines for submissions are under the cut.)

b. binaohan has decided to help out the fundraiser by offering 50 print books of their next book, Deconstructing Whipping Girl: A critical commentary. At the present, the only way to get a print copy is to support their patreon.

HOWEVER, donate $50.00 to Biyuti Publishing’s current fundraiser and you’ll get a print copy too!

Enjoy the rough draft intro to the book and we’ll be contacting you for shipping information soon.

(Note: If you’ve already donated 50 or more to the campaign, you’ll be hearing from us to get a shipping address for a copy!)

  • The Level-Up Biyuti Publishing Book Sale!
  • $50.00 Add to cart

Hi!

So. As noted elsewhere, this is pretty much a one woman operation and… it is really more work than one person is capable of. So Biyuti Publishing is looking to build a roster of TWOC and QTPOC who having experience and skills with stuff like copy editing, graphic design, and similar publishing related activities (although, copy editors and graphic designers are probably what we need most).

While we can’t afford to pay heaps of money, all work referred to you will be compensated (at a rate we negotiate on a per-project basis).

This work will be intermittent and not reliable for steady income, but could be useful for a little extra money and experience.

Fill the form if you’d like to be added to our list!
