idk who needs to hear this rn but suffering is not noble. take the tylenol

One time when I was younger I was refusing to take headache medicine and my mom said “the person who invented that medicine is probably so sad you won’t let them help you” and now every time I find myself denying medicine I just imagine the saddest scientist making those big wet eyes like “why won’t you let me help” and whoop then I take the medicine

scientist when you don't take the medicine they developed to help your pain

As long as you are taking a SAFE dose of it, then it's *good* for you. Pain is bad for the body. The inflammation from prolonged pain can worsen chronic issues and make it harder to heal.

Ibuprofen is best for pain that has inflammation, while acetaminophen doesn't help with inflammation but is more broadly effective on other types of pain. As long as you are taking the recommended dose, you can even take them TOGETHER, since they have different mechanisms of action.

You do need to be aware of how much and how often you are taking any pain medication. Overdoses can be very painful (even lethal.) And if you are in chronic pain often enough that you need more than the safe dose, then you need to look into other medications to manage that pain.

(Also, if you are specifically taking Acetaminophen/Tylenol for your go-to pain management, getting some NAC and taking that with it reduces the risk of overdose AND may strengthen the effect.)

One other thing: NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen being the three big ones) can cause digestive issues with chronic use, including stomach ulcers. That doesn't mean "don't take them," it means "if you're at the point where you're on them all the time, every day, constantly, you should talk to a doctor about either reducing that risk or switching to another medication that doesn't have those side effects."

Just adding: that’s an Islam flag there and when I worked for a semester at a Mosque as part of a cultural exchange, the Imam told me that if there are hungry people within walking distance, then they are failing their duties.

I carry that with me always. Feed your neighbours.

Schools: don’t teach those skills anymore

Stuff: is made to not be repairable

Tools & Materials: are priced as a luxury

Working Hours: have expanded to take up a lot of people’s whole day and weekends

Wages: have stagnated so that everyone has to work full time

lets not forget:

Your parents: have never actually taught you any of those things either

Everyone- eat the rich! everyone on the Titan was a self entitled rich person (except that poor kid rip)! They shouldn’t have exploited the victims of the Titanic!

News sources everywhere-

Why do I keep seeing James Cameron all over my news (I know these are both Insider, but I have been seeing James Cameron in the news for days from several different outlets, I’m just lazy) Listen, I know he did the time and made the movie but how is he any different? Rich white guy? Profited off of the exploitation of the tragedy of the Titanic? Self entitled expert? Bleh I’m over seeing his crusty wannabe Saruman face all over my phone. Go back to the Avatar movies and think about what you’ve done.

Image descriptions- two news articles, one titled “James Cameron estimates he’s spent more time with the Titanic than the ship’s actual captain after 33 voyages to the wreckage” and “The Titan sub was likely trying to surface and the passengers probably knew the hull was starting to crack before it imploded, James Cameron says.”

A news article titled James Cameron on Titanic Submarine Loss: “Struck by the Similarity of the Titanic Disaster Itself” and a lovely hands rubbing meme with the text “James Cameron eyeballing the opportunity he never thought would come: Titanic 2”

...I'm writing this under the assumption that you don't know any better, because hoo boy is this a bad take

James Cameron legitimately numbers among the small handful of people most qualified to talk about the Titan disaster. The reason why is because being a filmmaker is almost a side project compared to his very real contributions to submersible design, oceanography, and undersea exploration. Cameron has spent decades in the field of undersea science and submarine engineering. He co-designed a submersible called Deepsea Challenger which he personally took to the Challenger Deep, the lowest point of the Marianas Trench and the lowest point on Earth, alone; the first and to date only person to have ever done so solo. His hyperfixation is not the Titanic, it's submersible engineering and undersea exploration in general. Here's him being presented the Nierenberg Prize (for contributions to oceanography) in 2013:

Note that in the above interview he literally says that he made Titanic essentially just to get the funding to go to the wreck site (and to have the funding to continue to do so decades onward). He's made 33 dives to the wreck of the Titanic.

The reason why he appears in the news is not because he wants to talk about the disaster. It's got little to nothing to do with him having made Titanic (though that is tangentially related). It's because everyone knows that he is an actual, legitimate expert on the issue of submersible engineering (as well as both diving and diving to the Titanic wreck in particular), and so they bombarded him with interview requests and requests for comment. He specifically did not respond to any such requests until after the deaths of the passengers had been confirmed, because he knew that the sub had imploded and they were all dead, and he didn't want to be insensitive and drown everyone's hopes by telling everyone that the search and rescue was pointless. Here's him on ABC News next to his friend and associate Dr. Bob Ballad, the man who discovered the wreck of the Titanic, who is probably the only other person more qualified than Cameron to talk about the recent disaster:

TL;DR: James Cameron is not being interviewed because "he made Titanic"; he's being interviewed because he's a well-known and verifiable submersible engineering and undersea expert.

Absolutely fuckin wild that SCOTUS delivered a blow to LGBTQ inclusive nondiscrimination laws nationwide based on that case...because one web designer went to court to have the "right" to refuse to design wedding websites for same gender couples hypothetically.

Hypothetically, because no one even tried to hire her to do that. But this is the outcome.

I hope Lorie Smith never has a day of peace ever again.

...And they just stuck down the Biden administrations student loan forgiveness program.

Fuck SCOTUS.

Not to be #cute on main but I simply will not rest until the Supreme Court as an institution is nothing but ash and soot underneath my feet 😊😊🥰🥰😍

Whoa guys check out this #cute pic I found online 🥰🥰🥰

"tumblr is so cozy and nice compared to reddit" okay everyone, i know we are excited to have new people, but lets not pretend this website is without its rich history of frivolous death threats,

i mean true but they're pretty clumsy and stupid death threats and people generally just giggle at them.

someone on here once told me i should kill myself and when i told them they should come try to kill me themselves they started cryposting that i was threatening violence

this is the dork ass loser website, it's fine

i mean to specify yes absolutely you will get death threats if you get popular and are a minority or autistic but they’re going to be deeply fucking pathetic.

like. ‘pee your pants’ pathetic. ‘callout post with 90% broken links’ pathetic. ‘kids half your age wondering why you haven’t been cancelled yet’ pathetic. ‘baby gays declaring your sexual orientation was made up for notes’ pathetic. ‘steven universe adults trying to act like your lukewarm opinion on a child’s cartoon is the only thing delaying the second coming’ pathetic. ‘well-meaning midwest middle schoolers who think trans rights involve reblogging a gc2b advertisement and then screaming at 40 year old transsexuals for using the wrong terminology for their own titties’ pathetic.

there are seriously deranged assholes here and they will try to take you down and it will be the weirdest and saddest case of lateral aggression you’re likely to experience on this bitch of an earth.

good luck.

someone got so mad i hadn't updated my batman fanfic that they threatened to find a hitman on the dark web to stab my loved ones in the tummy

specifically the tummy

haha yeah funny threats haha. i was told by an anon that they hope my child gets raped and has their genitals sliced off, after another user made a fraudulent callout post about me (that had thousands of notes by the time i finally got tumblr to remove it, and they only did because i was able to report the post for reposting my art without permission), claiming that i'm a pedophile and "create CP" because i drew SFW art of a baby minotaur drawing with chalk.

and the shit i've seen other people get on this hellsite, shit like "i'm glad you got sexually abused and i hope it happens again because you haven't learned your lesson", "i wish your abusers had done worse to you, i wish they'd killed you", images or real life gore and dead people and animal abuse, slurs and racism and transphobia and homophobia, and explicitly described threats of violence (including sexual) sent to CSA survivors, including minors.

so like. if we're going to act like all death threats and anon hate sent on this site is "deeply pathetic", it logically follows that anyone who gets upset by that shit is also deeply pathetic. and i don't fucking care how silly threats like "tee hee i will find u and stab u in the tummy :3" are, no one should be sent shit like that and they have every right to be upset and uncomfortable over them. not everyone's able to laugh off death threats, no matter how "deeply pathetic" you think the are, and they shouldn't have to.

anyway bless OP for their comments in the replies

Apparently someone left a lighter in their pocket and all of That is from the gas released when the lighter ruptured

So there's slightly more to it than that, that dryer is a natural gas dryer rather than a purely electric one. So when the lighter went off (the initial small explosion) it damaged the sealed drum enough to get to the gas lines in the heating element of the dryer which then allowed the natural gas and oxygen to mix, hit the fire from the lighter, and result in the second MUCH LARGER blast.

This is one of the many reasons why you always check your pockets, and also why I've never owned a natural gas dryer, even though they're way more energy efficient than an electric one.

Idk I just think that “I have empathy for the friends and family of those that were lost” and “based on everything we’ve learned, going down in that death-trap was an incredibly stupid decision and anyone could see that” and “it is ridiculous anyone would pay 250k to go see a mass grave, the wealth gap has gotten out of hand so I can’t find it in myself to shed tears for the men involved” and “it is heartbreaking a teenage boy was lost because he wanted to impress his father” are statements that can coexist.

Human emotions are grey.

I am devastated at the amount of knowledge we lost with the two explorers who died, and also they were dumbasses who should have known better precisely because they knew a lot about the Titanic and what it took to get down there.

Please try to have an emotional depth greater than a teaspoon.

I find it personally offensive how many bad writers can get published so easily.

I used to find it reassuring, like, "Haha, wow, if THIS can get published..." but now I take it to mean "It doesn't matter if your book is good or not, all that matters is if you're in the right social circles (and you're not)"

As someone who used to acquire for an indie publisher ... it sucks on the other end, too. We don't WANT to work on shitty books with shitty writing. But bossman wants to make money, and shitty writer has marketing clout/knows the right people/is already published (even if it's only online/ebook).

I used to read the most AMAZING submissions I'd be forced to pass on. Like, there was one, a literary fantasy featuring a bi deaf protagonist who learns how to navigate a spectrum of relationships while discovering herself (I don't want to give too many details out of respect to the author/don't want her concept stolen) and I couldn't get it acquired no matter how thorough my proposal and marketing plan was because she was a debut author with fewer than 10k Twitter followers and we needed that advance money for another Fifty Shades knockoff (this was a few years ago lol).

BUT PLEASE DON'T LET THAT DISCOURAGE YOU! If you're a writer, and you're trying to get published, don't give up!! If your first novel isn't getting traction with either a house or agency, publish it yourself on amazon. Get that "debut" moniker away from your name. Prove you can sell your shit and keep working.

A good agent will work with you to come up with a marketing/publicity proposal. That will be huge in getting houses to notice your work - makes the acquisitions team's job easier as they can point to it and tell bossman "we have a plan". Look online for titles that have high ratings/are on the NYT list that can be compared to yours. That helps give acquisitions an idea of what they're getting into - and how to represent your book to their ED/publisher.

A good agent will also help you target editors/imprints whose lists match your book, increasing your odds of getting positive feedback or even constructive feedback. If I had a submission that just wasn't quite ready for publication, I'd give detailed notes of what I wanted and ask them to revise and resubmit.

Keep writing! Even if a book isn't picked up, start your next. It's so attractive to see an author with several unpublished works ready to be polished if you already like the work that's submitted. And more writing only refines your skills.

Yes, bad writers get published. And too many good writers, even when published, go unrecognized (if you like southern gothic fiction a la Where the Crawdads Sing, go read The Past is Never, which came out four months earlier and got NO national attention but is BEAUTIFUL). Be such a good writer that you break those odds.

Because you can. I've read your stuff on Tumblr. On Ao3. On Fanfiction.net. On Wattpad. You can do it.

This is actually practical advice; thank you.

i’m speechless

This is how the system of white supremacy  operates. The media is used 2 create stereotypes like blk on blk crime. They need black men to fill jail cells for the Prison Indstrial complex

You know what? I’m tired of this. I do not know what exactly they are waiting for. I mean our government comes up with “reasons” to invade other countries, such as Syria, like their government is allegedly violating human rights or something like that. but… I mean for other countries, they do not even have to go deep to bomb the fuck out of this place, they can just look at our media. And this has been happening to people of color since the media has existed.

I’ll never forget this 👇🏾

Did a research project on this in undergrad and the results are extremely alarming because it’s not just in imagery, it’s in language used even in the law making process and within our own communities in a completely different way than expected.

Independent bookstores around the country have a particularly clever lifeline, one perfectly suited to the unprecedented moment we find ourselves in. The strange part? It came into being just weeks before the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, and before the bookstores started closing up shop wondering if they’d reopen at all.
The lifeline in question is called Bookshop
In simple terms, it’s a super clean, user-friendly online bookstore whose raison d’être is supporting independent bookstores — not simply with exposure or resources (though that’s certainly a factor), but with cold hard cash…
