To that point, when I was watching Crimes and noticing its themes about the evolution and transformation of the human body, I was wondering if you were engaging at all in ongoing conversations about the transgender movement.
Yeah, well, I observe it. I’m not really engaged with it directly. They’re taking that idea seriously. They’re saying, “Body is reality. I want to change my reality. That means I have to change my body.” And they’re being very brave and they’re investing a lot in these changes, especially these ones that are not reversible, which most of them aren’t. I say, go ahead. This is an artist giving their all to their art.

Tbh this really sounds self congratulatory but rereading everything I said about Ravenous (1999) makes me want to BURST INTO TEARS now that I've listened to the commentary because like. The director (Antonia Bird) sounds so nervous and insecure. At the point of recording the commentary she'd probably already seen the bad reviews and realized that it was a commercial failure, but she's recording the director's commentary anyway (the first time she'd ever done so) and kind of hesitant to speak about more than their issues with the locations and the weather at first, but then near the end she fucking cuts loose and goes on a couple of long rants about the themes of imperialism and genocide and eating disorders and addiction and homoeroticism and how it all played a role in this strange western horror satire and how even as it was serious about all those things it was also supposed to be funny sometimes.... and there's this moment where she's like "Maybe some people will get it?" And I want to crawl through the screen, crawl through time. I GOT IT, MS. BIRD. I SAW WHAT YOU WHERE DOING. I SAW WHAT YOU WERE COMMUNICATING. I LOVE YOU. I'M SO SORRY THAT THE CRITICS AND THE AUDIENCES IN 1999 WERE TOO STUPID TO GET IT. YOU DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER. I LOVE YOU."
