Humans are Weird (and also pretty cool) - Sign Language!
Context: It was a request, and also! Sign language is so cool, actually? I want to learn libras but I know I would be a disaster while learning so why not show some positivity here? Sign languages are awesome even though I don’t know a lot!
Anyways, same crew as always. I might need to do a masterpost and actually write more about the crew’s personalities and all that stuff.
Humans hands are, actually, something extremely and stupidly complicated. Lots of tiny little bones and muscles together, and they can all move, sometimes independently from each other, and do extremely delicate activities that even the best telepathic species would have difficulties doing.
They have two sets of five fingers, with different sizes, but same purpose. They, along with the two legs, are certainly the defining characteristics of humans - at least, the phsycial ones.
Even after two months working with humans, it was still difficult for an exact mental definition of them. An ym, for example, would always prefer solitude and control over their environment, and prolongued exposure to multiple unknown (intelligent) beings was something that would always be considered stressful and even harmful. The humans are a very social species, however some of them would, actually, absolutely despise being in crowded places.
The asdi were also very social, and they loved to show off their colorful, floating bodies, their multiple eyes simillar to gemstones, and, of course, their telepathic capabilities, and an asdi would actually get sick if they couldn’t do that, specially if they couldn’t get enough daylight! And some humans would love to show off, and some would hate, and some would like it, but never too much.
Karqoi, an asdi, was having troubles. They were a doctor, a physical doctor, and everything they knew about humans would almost always fall down. Humans would always try to survive, but some of them were self-destructive. Humans are enduring, but some of them would get easily hurt. Humans were that and this and nothing!
They were, honestly, extremely tired, but they couldn’t simply get angry at them. And they were discussing the “human definition” problem with their friends, and some humans too. A long, exhaustive discussion that took them nowhere - Karqoi, not the rest of the group. They couldn’t get an exact definition, but the talk would be a good start.
Karqoi was processing everything, thirty minutes later, when they passed by Vitor doing unusual movements with his hands, looking at Laura, who was doing the same. They weren’t speaking, not at all, and them they started to laugh out loud.
The asdi felt their body tremble for only a bit, not understanding a thing. “I didn’t know humans were capable of telepathy…”, they said, approaching their friends.
Laura laughed again, harder this time, while Vitor looked at Karqoi, confused. “What?”
“You weren’t saying anything at all, but I saw that you both could understood each other. You should have spoke to us about telepathy before”, they responded.
“Oh, this isn’t telepathy”, Vitor responded. “I’m teaching Laura sign language”.
“What…?”
Laura wiped away her tears from laugh before answering: “Sometimes humans can’t hear stuff properly so we made a sign language for communication. No need for speaking, only sight”
Karqoi was floating right next to their friends, but they still could not understand. “How?”
“Using our hands”, Vitor said, pointing to his own.
“W- how are you capable of making multiple gestures in such a short period of time, in order to properly communicate? How is that even possible? How do you even keep track of it?!”
“Practice”, the man said. “And lots of errors, but that’s just what practice is”.
Karqoi never wanted to have not intervered in a conversation more. Just. What. How. “Why? This sounds extremely complicated”.
“So that everyone can communicate with each other”, Laura said.
“You don’t die without your hearing?”
“Normally not”, Laura said. “If you want to, I can send you some videos and files about sign language. It might be good for that ‘human database’”.
“That would be convenient”, Karqoi agreed, not completely understanding everything that just happenned.
Humans, with their tiny complicated hands, knowing how to make hundreds of gestures for a single language, in order to understand and communicate with everyone simply because they needed it and it was - still is, actually - convenient.
Why would anyone go to such lenghts? Karqoi didn’t know, but they thought they started to understand humans more.
They packbonded with everything, were extremely reckless and agressive, and, still, they survived. And, even with their “sign language” being impossibly hard (at least to an asdi eyes; they could simply communicate by telepathy), they still learned it and taught themselves…
Karqoi sensed a pattern here. Humans would do lots of stupid things and were umpredictable, but they loved to care for each other, still. They loved to do things and understand, and they loved to learn and teach themselves. Laura was learning sign language simply because she feared she was forgetting it.
Human emotions always led them to do mundane things in their eyes, and terrifying wonderful things to the rest of the universe eyes.
Quick edit bc the author wanted to do notes: I really wish we could learn sign language in schools, so in this universe everyone learns it at school. Also yeah sign language should be something normal but think about it! You are a alien, no hands simillar to a human, and then you learn they do this thing called sign language and you just?????? what????? Honestly I laughed at the thought so ajksvfhuaignzakgui
