Humans are Weird (and also pretty cool) - Sign Language!

Context: It was a request, and also! Sign language is so cool, actually? I want to learn libras but I know I would be a disaster while learning so why not show some positivity here? Sign languages are awesome even though I don’t know a lot!

Anyways, same crew as always. I might need to do a masterpost and actually write more about the crew’s personalities and all that stuff.

Humans hands are, actually, something extremely and stupidly complicated. Lots of tiny little bones and muscles together, and they can all move, sometimes independently from each other, and do extremely delicate activities that even the best telepathic species would have difficulties doing.

They have two sets of five fingers, with different sizes, but same purpose. They, along with the two legs, are certainly the defining characteristics of humans - at least, the phsycial ones.

Even after two months working with humans, it was still difficult for an exact mental definition of them. An ym, for example, would always prefer solitude and control over their environment, and prolongued exposure to multiple unknown (intelligent) beings was something that would always be considered stressful and even harmful. The humans are a very social species, however some of them would, actually, absolutely despise being in crowded places.

The asdi were also very social, and they loved to show off their colorful, floating bodies, their multiple eyes simillar to gemstones, and, of course, their telepathic capabilities, and an asdi would actually get sick if they couldn’t do that, specially if they couldn’t get enough daylight! And some humans would love to show off, and some would hate, and some would like it, but never too much.

Karqoi, an asdi, was having troubles. They were a doctor, a physical doctor, and everything they knew about humans would almost always fall down. Humans would always try to survive, but some of them were self-destructive. Humans are enduring, but some of them would get easily hurt. Humans were that and this and nothing!

They were, honestly, extremely tired, but they couldn’t simply get angry at them. And they were discussing the “human definition” problem with their friends, and some humans too. A long, exhaustive discussion that took them nowhere - Karqoi, not the rest of the group. They couldn’t get an exact definition, but the talk would be a good start.

Karqoi was processing everything, thirty minutes later, when they passed by Vitor doing unusual movements with his hands, looking at Laura, who was doing the same. They weren’t speaking, not at all, and them they started to laugh out loud.

The asdi felt their body tremble for only a bit, not understanding a thing. “I didn’t know humans were capable of telepathy…”, they said, approaching their friends.

Laura laughed again, harder this time, while Vitor looked at Karqoi, confused. “What?”

“You weren’t saying anything at all, but I saw that you both could understood each other. You should have spoke to us about telepathy before”, they responded.

“Oh, this isn’t telepathy”, Vitor responded. “I’m teaching Laura sign language”.

“What…?”

Laura wiped away her tears from laugh before answering: “Sometimes humans can’t hear stuff properly so we made a sign language for communication. No need for speaking, only sight”

Karqoi was floating right next to their friends, but they still could not understand. “How?”

“Using our hands”, Vitor said, pointing to his own.

“W- how are you capable of making multiple gestures in such a short period of time, in order to properly communicate? How is that even possible? How do you even keep track of it?!”

“Practice”, the man said. “And lots of errors, but that’s just what practice is”.

Karqoi never wanted to have not intervered in a conversation more. Just. What. How. “Why? This sounds extremely complicated”.

“So that everyone can communicate with each other”, Laura said.

“You don’t die without your hearing?”

“Normally not”, Laura said. “If you want to, I can send you some videos and files about sign language. It might be good for that ‘human database’”.

“That would be convenient”, Karqoi agreed, not completely understanding everything that just happenned.

Humans, with their tiny complicated hands, knowing how to make hundreds of gestures for a single language, in order to understand and communicate with everyone simply because they needed it and it was - still is, actually - convenient.

Why would anyone go to such lenghts? Karqoi didn’t know, but they thought they started to understand humans more.

They packbonded with everything, were extremely reckless and agressive, and, still, they survived. And, even with their “sign language” being impossibly hard (at least to an asdi eyes; they could simply communicate by telepathy), they still learned it and taught themselves…

Karqoi sensed a pattern here. Humans would do lots of stupid things and were umpredictable, but they loved to care for each other, still. They loved to do things and understand, and they loved to learn and teach themselves. Laura was learning sign language simply because she feared she was forgetting it.

Human emotions always led them to do mundane things in their eyes, and terrifying wonderful things to the rest of the universe eyes.

Quick edit bc the author wanted to do notes: I really wish we could learn sign language in schools, so in this universe everyone learns it at school. Also yeah sign language should be something normal but think about it! You are a alien, no hands simillar to a human, and then you learn they do this thing called sign language and you just?????? what????? Honestly I laughed at the thought so ajksvfhuaignzakgui

Humans are scary when silent

We all know humans are loud, and stupid, and they love to scream and cry and dance and sing and make noise. We all heard of the rumours, of old, cruel tales of humans isolating in pure silence and quickly getting sick.

In my kind, a true silent place is the worst thing you can find. Even the memories of the dead produce sound, and if they do not exist, them life was never in those places, and life comes from everywhere. A true silence is not the signal of Death. It’s the signal of non-existence itself.

It all started when, after terraforming an entire planet in 2 months using their own voices, the humans were called to a reunion in our small but fierce “Galactic Council”. Laura, the main singer and the one who would talk to the earth, pleading the long-lost Life to come back, and my dearest friend, was, of course, called. She would show to everyone how the Voice worked, explaining bit-by-bit. She always liked to teach, after all.

But, to my surprise, the rest of the crew was called, too. “Of course they called you, you guys need to explain what you saw!”, Laura said, as if it was obvious.

So, we were there, at the Council’s main meeting room. A magnificent place, made by the finest of architects in order to show a little bit of all the intelligent species, and the humans started to explain. They had specialists in the field, historians, and everyone explained a little piece of what happenned, how the humans used sound to call Life back. We heard of the tale, of how they destroyed their own home planet, and how they restored it. How they were determined to discover more of it, how Life truly works, and they showed us their now centuries of research.

And, to our surprise, they insisted on saying they just got started. “We still don’t know a lot, but we hope you can help us”, Laura said, and she was smiling, showing her teeth, and I knew no one from the reunion could even dare to refuse their wish. The humans were scary, terrifying, even, but all they needed to do was show their teeth, trying and failing to apeal to us, for we to realize how silly they sometimes could be.

I smiled, too, when the rest of the Council agreed, and I saw how excited they all were. Not all of us could save their homes and discovered planets. The humans and their hundred voices could help, in the end.

Soon, it was all over, and I stayed in the meeting room with Laura while she answered some other questions. I knew I wasn’t much of a help, but I also knew she appreciated my mere presence - she had told me this, and I would trust my life on her. And I did.

I remember perfectly what happenned; there was a terrifying, loud explosion, and so, so much was burning. I was on the floor, and everything was hurting. I did not have energy to simply float, nor the energy to get up by myself and walk. I was completely, utterly helpless, and there was blood. I will never forget the smell of blood and burnt flesh as Laura got up and looked at me, terrified.

I coughed. “Run”, I pleaded, “Save yourself”.

I did not understood what really was going on, but I knew, for sure, that it was orchestrated by someone. No explosion could simply form on by itself, and, to my despair, Laura walked to me and holded me in her arms. She was shaking, and I knew for sure that she would never be capable of carrying me, not with her fragile body “I will not leave will behind”, my friend said.

“Leave”, I insisted. “I will not survive”.

“Stop being so dramatic”, she responded. “We are getting out of here”.

That was when she attacked. Another asdi, like me, and I knew who she was.  Qarakoi. She was bigger, and more aggressive, and in that moment I thought my friend was going to die.

Qarakoi never liked humans in the first place, but I never thought she would try this, an actual attack, and hurt everyone else in the process. Even two weeks later I still do not understand why she did that, nor what her truly intentions were. She refuses to speak, they told me, but she is terrified. And I know why.

She attacked Laura and then grabbed me. “What did you do?!”, she asked.

I responded, using telepathy: “What do you mean?”

“What did you tell the humans, about us?!”

She tried to see more, to access my memories, but I won’t allow her. Maybe it was because of Laura’s human behaviour influence, maybe it was because I was afraid of what Qarakoi would do to her if she found out, but I fought back, even weak, even trembling, i fought back.

She stopped trying to access my mind, and she was furious. She showed me her teeth, screamed, and threw me to the floor. I screamed, feeling more parts of me breaking, and I whimpered, too.

I tried to breathe in, and then, and then I looked at Laura, and… Her eyes. There was something wrong with her eyes, and I still do not understand what happenned, but upon seeing me, her friend, one of her dearest friends, and the one she had told me about her mental health issues, how, in a more dark age, she had tried to destroy herself, awakened something deep, deep inside her. Something that wasn’t suposed to be awaken at the first place.

I saw something break inside Laura in the exact moment I coughed blood and laid on the floor with a broken arm, and never, in my entire life, I was so, so scared.

I thought she was going to scream, and I still wish, to this day, that she had screamed. I do not have nightmares, nor fear Laura, but I fear what was awaken.

She did not scream. She did not cry. She did not make a noise. She was silent, when humans weren’t suposed to be silent. They were loud and did so so so much, and their voices? Their healed the world with their voices! But she was pure Silence, and it  erupted from her. It, the Silence, it consumed the sound, and made it all go away.

I could not hear my breathing, nor my thoughts, nor anything else at all. It was the pure, deadly, ugly Silence my kind tells each other of, our worst and most terrifying nightmare. And it was coming from her.

She was Silence Itself, and I was the one who awakened it.

I looked at my attacker, and she was petrified, too. I saw Laura attacking her, using her bare hands to tear her down, and she only stopped when she stopped trying to scream.

Laura holded me into her arms, and she did not run. She walked, step by step, while her body was trembling and her eyes were dark. Silence was within her, and Silence consumed everything, and the Silence made me feel safe. I will never understand it, but it made me feel safe.

No one died. The humans didn’t allow it. The Silence, the Silence called to them, and they responded. Every single human. They were here the moment Laura stepped out of the meeting room, and they held me while she came back to rescue more beings, and I know the Silence called because it was the only thing I felt after the fight.

There is too much noise. There is too much noise. There is too much noise. Over and over and over again, like a plea.

The Silence doesn’t beg. It only consumed, and it only existed, but it begged, because it wasn’t the Silence. It was her. It was Laura.

The humans told us there was something called “adrenaline”, their own brains ignoring the brain and enabling the muscles to fully work, but after their started using the Voice, something changed. It wasn’t just adrenaline anymore, it wasn’t just them doing a bit of the impossible anymore, and maybe it never was.

The Silence is within them. And it is recomforting.

Alien then realizes "Wait...humans also feed family and friends. Jim ensures I don't skip meals. Am I...family?"

Avatar

"Am I family?"

Jim looked across the table and smiled as he passed a few more rashers of bacon over to Chix.

"We've served together for over eight years. You're the godfather of my son."

Jim's toddler, Charlie, sat on the floor playing a simple game of trying to grab Chix's tail as its tip wriggled back and forth.

"You helped Akiko get to the med bay when she went into labour."

Akiko was in the kitchenette area of the quarters, pouring herself another cup of coffee, "I think you were more scared than I was," she laughed to herself.

Chix almost shuddered at the memory. Egg-laying was so much more civilised. There were fewer fluids involved.

If Jim noticed Chix's discomfort, he said nothing. "You've saved my life, at least half a dozen times, I gave you an open invitation to come over to breakfast every morning, last year we went a whole parsec off-course to get you back home in time to see your oldest hatchling get married."

Chix nodded, "screw the company and its schedules," he muttered under his breath. It had been Jim's mantra during the entire trip.

Jim shook his head, that same smile still on his face. "And you only ask now, NOW, after all that, if you're family?"

Akiko joined them at the table, giving her husband a little kiss on the cheek as she sat down, "Chix," she said with all seriousness, "you were family the day you came aboard."

Chix almost felt like crying. Though that might have been because Charlie had finally caught his tail. The little one had a strong grip.

I see many posts in the Space Orcs tag depicting humans as super strong, oafish, barbarian types:

But consider: The Neanderthals spec'd into strength, but couldn't throw stuff. Homo Sapiens can throw stuff, but are not as strong. Since learning how to throw stuff, our warfare has essentially been a contest to see how far we can throw stuff at the enemy. From rocks, to spears, to bullets, to missiles, to one day lasers. Just about all cultures in the world hold accuracy in high regard. Some do appreciate raw strength, yes, but the weapons that ties us together are the spear and bow.

What if instead of giant hulking brutes, we are expert hunters/rangers? Rumor amongst the galaxy is that a Human can shoot the wings off a fly at one hundred meters. In the dark. With minimal training. What if that were uncommon for other species who evolved to rely on their strength, speed, or other senses, rather than the plain ability to hit something with a projectile?

XxX

Meet the Human. They are damn near impossible to kill. They can outlast just about anyone stamina-wise. They're not the strongest, nor the fastest, but don't ever corner one lest you witness the terror of adrenaline.

They can eat anything, adapt to just about any environment, speak just about any language.

When they pick their prey, it can try running, but it will only die out of breath.

It can try hiding, but the human will use clues left behind to track it to its hole.

And besides all that, they'll probably just ice you from a couple hundred yards and call it a day.

Meet the Human. Not a hulking barbarian, but a crafty, scrappy wastelander. The galaxy's most feared marksman.

(Now that we have that out of the way, I like to imagine that there's a hulking race of canines out there *cough*lycans*cough* that we're going to hit it off with the instant we show up on the galactic scene. They'll love us because we're not as breakable as the other species, and we give the best scritches. But also, we're stupidly aggressive for our size and they'll feel the need to protect us and absorb us into their packs. Then one day they'll read the history of earth dogs and just be like "oh.")

"This should do it." It looked down at itself, pleased.

The two - rather long - legs jut out under it's torso. It used it's new - ew - five fingers to feel along it's skin, feeling the bumps of a ribcage underneath. A heartbeat too.

In front of it was a mirror, and staring back at itself was a human. Well, an illusion of one.

Time and time again, the newly star bound aliens, humans, had infiltrated it's species ranks through elaborate disguises. They got better at it every time.

Not only were humans great with what they call "make up" but they had a way of mimicking their behaviors. It's species tried to replicate this. Failed to. In the end, they had something better.

A team of highly immoral scientists who were given boundless permission to try whatever the hell they wanted. And they went with genetic mutation.

It was a painful change, and slow. Agonizingly slow. But now, it was a super solider with one superpower. A shape-shifter.

And it was time to test it out.

It strolled out of the bathroom and into the eating area where various alien species were seated. Only one human - the unwitting test subject - was present.

If this could pass for normal conversation, this could pass for war.

It strolled right up to the other creature - a man who had not yet seen him - and sat down.

"I'm glad to see one other human on this station," it said.

The human non-committedly looked up. Only to jump with a start after taking it in.

"What are you?" he said.

"A human?" it said. If it's species could sweat, it would do so by now.

The man stared at it a moment. He turned to the alien on his right and pointed to his left.

"Forgive me if this question is batshit insane, but what do you see?"

"Two humans?" The alien had three eyes.

Her species' third eye was famous for detecting the most miniscule details and then committing it to subconscious memory. The rise and fall of a chest. The careful rythem of a human heart. How often - or little - a human blinks. Even human's make-up tricks couldn't bypass her species' extra form of security.

"So it is," said the man. She turned away and it found itself blinking quickly in relief. It cut that out when the human turned to it. "Sorry, I guess you're just real ugly."

"Ugh, rude." All humans are ugly.

He scooted in closer on the bench and leaned in towards it. It found itself leaning away, but couldn't help but notice the bead of sweat on the human's forehead and how the pupils were shrunken as far as they could.

"Wanna hear an old Earth tale?"

"I'm sure I know it." Was this a test?

"I doubt you know this one. My grandfather experienced it himself." He leaned away. It had stop itself from blinking too rapidly again. "This is about an Earth cryptid."

"Bigfoot?" it said, but nodded as if it already knew.

"Everyone knows Bigfoot," he laughed. "No, he was driving down a dark country road unlit by street lights. He didn't have his brights on - that's important to the story, you see - but heaven knows why."

Brights??? What are brights???

"Down the road an animal was crossing. A simple male deer with antlers. He couldn't see its body yet, but he was familiar with the eyes. They glowed as his car sped closer."

"He slowed as the deer became more apparent, and eventually came to a stop when the creature wouldn't move. By now, he could see the antlers, the four legs, the neck. Not in detail, mind you, but he could see it "

Other aliens in the room- not hearing this conversation - were trickling out of the room. There was no dramatic reason for this, they simply finished their lunch. The human, not paying any attention to his own lunch, continued the story.

"It's not uncommon for deer to freeze, especially when lights flood their eyes. So my grandfather gave it a moment to realize it should run. When seconds ticked by, he honked at it."

"There was something... off... about the deer. It looked every way like a deer, but the longer he stared, the longer that just didn't seem right."

"Was it a deer?" it said.

"It was not."

"What was it?"

"Not a deer."

The alien found itself frown at this in a perfectly human way.

"Time went on, and my grandfather decided to turn on the brights to try and see the creature better. And it was still... a deer... but not..."

It found its frown deepening.

"What's worse was it began to move. Similar to a deer, but all wrong. Like maybe its legs bent the wrong way. Or perhaps the legs were too long. It was every way like a deer, but it just was not."

"He drove home as soon as that not deer was out of his path. And yes, he found himself alive the next morning. But that encounter disturbed him, so he recounted it to everyone. And many people - especially in that town - could tell him their own stories."

"...okay?"

"Well, that story is funny. Probably a figment of his imagination, but it does reflect a very real human instinct."

This was another test. "Would this be something I know of?"

"It's called uncanny valley. It occurs to us when something looks human... but is not."

"Why?"

"Well, rumor has it that it was a instinct formed from a predator. Something that looked human but was not. A not human."

"A not human? Is this true?"

"No," he said. He laughed. "No, we most likely developed it for something a lot more practical. Corpses, you see. They carry a lot of bacteria, so we have a fear of them."

"...interesting."

"I have that very same feeling of you," he said. The room was empty besides the two. He reached for his bottle above his lunch tray.

"But I'm not a corpse?"

"You're about to be."

The human tossed down the bottle, effectively cracking off the bottom half and forming his weapon.

It shape-shifted as it scurried away to retreat from the very much human.

Part 1 here.

Humans are space NANNYs

So it’s no surprise that humans adore animals and will keep them as pets. To aliens this isn’t a new concept as they do this too with their own planets animals. Some aliens even collect animals from other planets if they’re looking for something a tad more ‘exotic’ but are only allowed to adopt once they pass a knowledge test (how to care for it).

Even animals on earth form adoptive relationships with animals of their own kind and even some other animals !

But when humans instinctively started taking care of other alien babys and animals especially trying to pack bond with the deadly ones it started turning heads.

Human? Why are you trying to pet the giant fire breathing lizard?

Human? What’s under your shirt. ARE THOSE EGGS? PUT THEM BACK. *que chase*

Many aliens on board the giant ship have leaned into letting the human passengers care for the younger ones and animals aboard the vessel. It’s just sometimes the humans don’t know how to say no and maybe possibly take on a little too much work insisting it’s fine, as they slowly sink in a pile of living fluff, scales and wrinkles of all sorts.

It’s not until a door bursts open with animals and children running and causing chaos that they learn the limit the amount of baby’s the humans get to play with all at once. Especially since the humans seem to run and cause just as much chaos along side the ones they’re supposed to be monitoring.

Humans Are Feral

Alright, this my first post, and possibly a part one in a series of humans are feral story arcs. As well as being something that I constantly think about and wonder why no one talks about it. Maybe I just haven’t found the specific post.

Have we ever talked about how vicious humans can be? Especially in scenarios where something we care about it threatened? And I mean “bared teeth and snarling” type vicious. Beast mode activated. I’m talking about how we basically turn into animals in certain situations and rely solely on primal instinct.

Take mothers/fathers for example. You ever see a parent react to a situation in which their child was dancing with death? They will risk life and limb for that kid. My dad dove into a pool full speed after my two year old sister fell in the deep end. Clothes and all. Have you ever seen a woman after just giving birth and her mind is just straight hormones? And something happens that she perceives a threat? Someone picks up the newborn without consent, she jumps out of bed after a fucking cesarian to snatch the kid and full on snarl at them? Friend’s aunt did that shit. And don’t get me started on the super strength thing humans can do when someone is in danger and adrenaline kicks in. Then there are the people who will protect some random ass kid. A toddler or small kid with no parent around and suddenly something dangerous is about to happen? People will jump in parent or not.

It was a quiet day in the streets of Kuratz. The market paths usually bustling with people of races only had a small stream of customers bouncing from stall to stall. Tourists or natives of all sorts. Ky’lio, a young Avalanghar, watched from his mia’s stall, long ears swiveling this way and that to pick up on what conversations he could understand.

Then they caught his eye. The strangers you’d never see in such a place. Humans. What looked like a family unit. Ky’lio couldn’t help but lean forward to stare. He recognized the tallest as a male and the slightly shorter one a female, as he had watched some interactions between his mia and her human customers. But those humans were always soldiers or neighboring colonists. These humans were different.

There was a third party. Ky’lio had never seen a human child except for the few pictures shared from other humans. It was notoriously well-known that humans were extremely protective of their younglings, so few were seen away from human colonies. So the small, bouncing creature Ky’lio watched tug on the adult humans’ paws didn’t register as a baby human until he really stared and saw the round features.

It kept trying to dart away from its parents, but the adults held vice-like grips onto the little one’s paws. Until the stopped at a stall, Hadi Midas’s stall selling sweet fruits from the Dolor Jungles. The male let the little human go and the female took hold of the little one’s free paw. But the wild thing tugged and cried out, like a prisoner chained to a wall. It wailed and cried out in its native tongue, no doubt begging for release from its mia’s iron laws. The scene reminded Ky’lio of when he saw Kaloway serpent at a traveling exotic zoo. It too thrashed and screeched in its chains the same way the little human was. Then the female leaned down and whispered something to the child, making it go limp in her paws, hanging like a dead thing. The female only snorted and turned back towards her mate, who was speaking with Hadi Midas.

What happened next would always remain burned into Ky’lio’s memory. The little human twisted strangely and suddenly they yanked themselves from their Mia’s grip. It screeched triumphantly and dashed away. The female yelled and ran after it, but it was no use. The little human was fast and determined. As it ran down the street it neared the alleyway next to the Damik stall. Ky’lio felt the fur along his spine stand up. The alleyway was a known ambush site for younglings separated from their parents. A human child would be a great prize.

As the human youngling ran past the alleyway, a giant Oyiadin stepped out and grabbed the skinny, hairless arm. The little human screamed, a sound that had every fear feeling surging through Ky’lio’s body. Others in the street turned and stared, but none dared do anything. Oyiadins had a reputation for smuggling and trafficking, their muscular stature, claws and jaws full of sharp fangs scared away any possible help. It wasn’t the first time Ky’lio witnessed a kidnapping and helplessly watched as the kidnapped youngling’s parents shrieked in despair and fear, never daring to fight such beasts. So they would lose their child.

But these were humans. And humans were known for strange, impossible feats. That fact still did not prepare the young Avalanghar to witness the female human slam into the giant Oyiadin, tackling the muscular biped to the ground. The male human swooped in and snatched the small human, now crying and clinging to its parent. The female stood atop the giant, snarling like a wild fangher. Her lips were pulled back to reveal small, white teeth that were nowhere near as intimidating as the Oyiadin’s, yet the expression was somehow more fearsome. She growled something in her native tongue, standing menacingly over the Oyiadin that hadn’t tried to stand up. It’s ugly face was strangely empty of menace, it’s six eyes wide and staring at the human it easily dwarfed. Yet the female held no fear, spitting and snarling, her body tensed for a fight. But the Oyiadin offered no challenge. She spat something in her language once more, then turned and walked to her mate and youngling.

“That is why you must not provoke humans.” Ky’lio jumped, turning to see his mia behind him and watching everything. She looked down at him. “They are dangerous and unpredictable. Especially when they’re protective.” She looked up to watch the trio of humans pass by. “Never underestimate their willingness to fight for their own.”

Kids are one thing. Then there are pets. I have personally felt the willingness to kill if anyone threatened my dog or cat. That pack bonding stuff is no joke. No, I don’t care if you hear me call my cat a fat, no-rent-paying bastard, he’s my fat no-rent-paying bastard. And I won’t just die for him. I will kill you and cut you up in pieces and summon satan to dine with me on them for that fat bastard.

Imagine:

Galar was a puvarra, and deserved xis comeuppance. But the crew never expected for their human crew mate to be the one to do it.

Oakley was a good crew mate and most of the team had high opinions of him. He did his work, turned in reports on time, socialized and was overall very kind. The crew was grateful that the human was one that presented the better side of his species. However some were not fond of humans. Galar, the Yunagi from the helix system 1-4b, was one of this opinion. Xe was unabashedly cruel to many on the crew, and only got away with it because xe often blackmailed xis victims to not report to the captain. It was irritating how xe knew certain things. But xe’d finally gone too far.

Oakley had a pet aboard the ship. The creature humans called a cat, a furry thing on four legs that was a master at contortion. While the crew had been hesitant about the creature at first, hearing stories about Terran animals, many grew to like it. Oakley’s cat was named Jambo, a black and white pattern on its fur and a long, skinny tail. It would rub against their legs or jump upon counters to watch them at work. Sometimes it would doze off near them. Only Oakley and Jabari, Oakley’s partner in work, had been selected as thrones for the creature to doze upon. Many on the crew came to feel honored when the creature would approach them and rub its cheek against an outstretched appendage, a sign Oakley had explained to be affection and a demand for “pets.” Jambo got many pets.

Then one day, as the crew drew together in the dining area for a meal, Galar chose his hill to die on. Jambo had approached the tables, padding towards Oakley, but stopping as some crew began making chirping and clicking sounds, trying to intice Jambo toward them for pets. Then Galar walked by, the blue finned Yunagi’s eyes landing on Jambo. And before any could do anything, xe pulled back a long leg and kicked the black and white cat. Jambo let out a loud screech.

Then Galar was flying back and Oakley was screaming in his native language. He wailed on Galar, his fist connecting every time. At one point he tried to choke xim. Several crew jumped upon them, pulling the human way from the Yunagi, but the damage was done. Purple bruises were already evident upon the Yunagi’s blue-green hide, scratches and crescent shaped marks on xis neck were leaking dark blue blood. Nothing serious, but enough to rattle everyone.

Oakley didn’t bother staying to explain to the captain. He immediately left to find his cat, as did some of the others. Many could care less if Galar was injured, because the stupid puvarra deserved it. They worried for Jambo. The cat was later found and inspected. Luckily for Jambo, he had some light bruising. Very lucky. Oakley even cried, the clear wetness on his face a strange sight for many.

When asked by the captain why he attacked Galar, Oakley point-blank said it was because he kicked Jambo. And anyone who dared hurt his cat was going to get hurt themselves. He said it so casually the captain blinked several times. While humans were known for their protectiveness of packmates, this aggression was unexpected. They went on to scold Oakley and told him that they would have to write this on his personal report for future jobs. Oakley only nodded, still unswayed. The captain sighed and dismissed him. They knew they probably should have done more for such heinous action. But unbeknownst to others, the captain was also fond of Jambo. They were the only other person Jambo chose to nap on.

This was written really fast, so I apologize if the writing is a little scrunched and there are mistakes. It physically hurt to write about a cat getting kicked, I wanted to vomit. Ugh. I wanted to go off on a tangent about humans taking on giant beasts for their kids because wouldn’t we? I personally don’t like kids, but I admit that I’d fight a bear for that one-year old that smiled at me in a Walmart checkout line, then offered me her animal cracker. I mean, wtf. I’ll save that for the next post tho.
