I'm Anna, I'm Autistic, my humors are out of balance, I am unfortunately not the Serene Doge of Venice, and I post (well, reblog mostly) about my SpIns! Right now that's mostly the Silmarillion, but you'll encounter some LotR, Star Wars, Scholomance, and Animorphs in the mix. I also write fanfiction - find me on AO3 under the name of potatoesanddreams. You may know me on Discord as Dovey. BTW, I am an adult. (she/her)

Welcome To The Overworked Blorbo Battle!

This tournament will be held to determine the very best overworked character of them all! Submit your burnout-bound blorbos to the Google form after reading the rules!

This is the second tournament of @deadguydeathmatch

Rules:

  1. Characters must be overworked, whether it's due to an external or internal pressure doesn't matter.
  2. Characters don't need to have a literal job to qualify, they can be overworked from a hobby, relationship or any other number of things
  3. Fictional characters only, no real people
  4. No Harry Potter, terfs and other bigots stay far away
  5. BE CIVIL! Don't harass or attack me or your fellow voters.
  6. Propaganda is both allowed and encouraged provided it's good natured.
  7. You may submit as many characters as you like, but only submit one per form
  8. Do not submit the same character multiple times

The closing date for submissions hasn't been decided yet and neither has the amount of characters in the tournament. (Though it will probably be less than 128 this time)

Inspirations are under the readmore:

Maglor: we should keep these twins

Maedhros: absolutely not

Maedhros four days later: so we'll teach them Quenya in the mornings, mostly with the songs and rhymes which will teach them life skills like learning weather signs. They'll need to help prepare their own meals of course, and by the end of ten days I'll start them on the trapping and hunting. Afternoons we will do history, theirs and ours I mean, and in the evenings the practical skills they can't learn on horseback as we ride.

Maglor:

Maglor: what happened to "not keeping them", huh?

whether youve played tears of the kingdom/breath of the wild or not, PLEASE help me out here. in fact the judgement of non players will probably make a big difference.

these guys are called "blue lizalfos" in game. but thats not blue. right. right??? they're purple, right???? a blue-heavy purple, sure, but distinctly purple??????

reblog for bigger sample size etc etc

Crack AU: Tiny Maglor

During his time wandering the shores of Middle Earth, Maglor slowly begins to fade, and as he fades, his soul is only able to support less and less of a physical body. By the time Elrond finds him during the late Third Age, Maglor is so small that he fits into his hand.

As we enter a short hiatus waiting for the next Dracula Daily update, I thought I’d compile the beginning of every Re: Dracula entry released so far in order to display Jonathan’s degrading mental health over the course of the past two weeks (not including Mina and Lucy’s letters)

He’s really going through it 😔

i think a lot of media makes the mistake of treating the child as a cardboard cutout of idealized childhood (state of purity, unfiltered joy, innocence) and its only thru corruption of that ideal that the past selves of adults are made complex. which is a very poor view of childhood and it makes child characters profoundly unsatisfactory at its lamest and borderline reactionary at its most egregious

Avatar

a lot of writers are great at writing adults bc they see adults as people with 1. motivations 2. a past 3. a concrete ability to work towards a goal. all of these are things children are presumed to lack, for one reason or another - adults see children as impulsive, distracted by every shiny thing, when not all children are like that, and the impulsiveness of certain children still does not preclude underlying desires that are consistent to them; children have a way higher past:person ratio than the average adult! week for week, children are more profoundly affected by regular experiences because it is all new to them. everything sticks, and they remember. what they don't remember and what they do can be random at times and less random at others, but each child has (again) an underlying logic for what gets held onto harder than other things; children's lack of ability to work towards their goal is in large part why they are so prone to meltdowns. if you couldn't drink a glass of water when you're thirsty - if you had to get someone to help you each time, you'd end up pretty pissed every time they dragged their heels as well. and if that was true for everything you needed? [a/n: i'm aware this is reality for many disabled people! which is why adultism and ableism are so closely entwined as well]. but children ARE capable of working towards many of their goals in their own ways, whether those are emotional or physical goals.

but if you don't see children as people, though, all of those things fall apart, and you end up with the...idea of what role this creature is supposed to fill in the lives of people who look at her. this is inherently dehumanizing, make no mistake, it makes the child something that never appears to experience emotions that don't fill that idea or diverge strongly from that role, which in turn makes the character flat and uninteresting. there's no reason for us to care what happens to her, narratively, because the only thing we do have to care about is what happens to the people who care about her. she's not a character, she's an object that furthers the emotions of the other characters. she's a morality pet, or meaninglessly cute, or an aesop. there's nothing outside that for her. you could replace her with a puppy and literally nothing would change.

I love the idea of polls for characters that wouldn’t win otherwise because they’re too obscure, so I want to know what character people have the most strong opinions about, specifically who can split a room between negative or positive opinions the best.

For example: i haven’t heavily interacted with fandom since steven universe days so I’ll use Rose Quartz as an example. People either think she’s a soft uwu mom victim of the diamonds or an evil irredeemable space despot. I have never met a steven universe fan with a neutral opinion about her.

So that’s how your blorbo can win this poll: by being divisive. They don’t have to be popular or from a popular media, they just need the people who know them to have a strong opinion about them. In this poll, the character with the MOST EVEN balance of votes wins. I’ll post an example poll to show what I mean, but basically you’re encouraged to submit a blorbo if you love them or hate them! Either one helps them in this poll! I’ll be accepting submissions for a week from today (May 16th- May 22nd) and choosing the characters with the most love AND hate submissions (please don’t submit your blorbo on both sides to boost them, be cool about it), the amount will be based on how many submissions I get.

Then there was Lobelia. Poor thing, she looked very old and thin when they rescued her from a dark and narrow cell. She insisted on hobbling out on her own feet; and she had such a welcome, and there was such clapping and cheering when she appeared, leaning on Frodo's arm but still clutching her umbrella, that she was quite touched, and drove away in tears. She had never in her life been popular before. But she was crushed by the news of Lotho's murder, and she would not return to Bag End. She gave it back to Frodo, and went to her own people, the Bracegirdles of Hardbottle. When the poor creature died next spring – she was after all more than a hundred years old – Frodo was surprised and much moved: she had left all that remained of her money and of Lotho's for him to use in helping hobbits made homeless by the troubles. So that feud was ended.

My cousin Alanna has been paralyzed from the waist down after a failed surgery to remove a lipoma growing around her spinal cord. Her current home is not wheelchair accessible at all, and it is especially difficult for her to get in and out of her home to go to doctor's appointments. This gofundme is to raise funds to renovate and expand a small apartment attached to Alanna's sister's home to make it wheelchair accessible so that she can live there with her two younger kids, actually be able to get around her own place, and also be much closer to the rest of her family.

If you can spare a few dollars or a reblog that would be very much appreciated. <3

Yesss I would absolutely like to share!! Okay, so! She is my beloved darling. She used to have a name but she lost it. She doesn't see the point in being miserable so she's very cheerful and happy and Doesn't Mind Any Of It (she is SO miserable and she very much minds, but what's the point of knowing it?). She has this bright little performative laugh. She’d probably be kind of a vapid socialite if she weren't Going Through It - at least that's the persona she's trying to maintain as her coping mechanism (it's not working but try getting her to admit that). She WILL murder you if Morgoth wants her to. She won't WANT to, but what choice does she have? None, of course. Sorry haha :) you know how it is. Everybody’s doomed anyway so she hopes you don't mind very much.

In her backstory for the fic she’s found wandering near Nargothrond and taken in - this is before they start killing strangers who enter their lands - and pretty soon she tries to murder someone. They put her in jail about it and she has a flashback, at which point they figure out approximately what’s going on, so they move her to a nicer room, still guarded, and start trying to figure out how to break Morgoth’s mind-manipulation magic that’s on her. Then later on a… shall we say, similarly-afflicted character from another one of my fics shows up, and they make friends. (The fic is Recalled to Life - shameless self-promotion! This OC was actually going to be a character in that story originally, but I had to reduce the scope.)

Does anybody wanna remind me what the fuck hamlet wanted to write down when he started yammering about his tablets

This is the line, and the context for what Hamlet's talking about and why Stoker renders it tablet. It's nearly the same between the Bad Quarto and First Folio, so that bit has been recorded reasonably faithfully.

Aaaaa, the context being

O villain, villain, smiling, damnèd villain! My tables—meet it is I set it down That one may smile and smile and be a villain.

is making me feral, because that is SO Dracula!

The Obscure Tolkien Blorbos Tournament!

@mistergandalf's incredible Ultimate Tolkien Blorbo tournament has just wrapped up with our beloved Sam Gamgee taking the final trophy. But! Earlier rounds in the tournament were filled with a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth from Silmarillion fans as our favourites were UNFAIRLY ELIMINATED by people who DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THEM. So, I would like to present: the ultimate obscure Tolkien blorbos tournament!

Submit as many of your dubiously canonical, little-known faves as you'd like to - with a catch: characters with the fewest submissions are most likely to qualify for the bracket! With exactly one exception who is qualifying anyway because I say so.

Rules:

  • The character you submit can be part of Tolkien's legendarium in any way possible - discarded characters from earlier drafts, adaptation-only characters (RoP inclusive), etc.
  • No OCs.
  • Canonically unnamed characters (for example Curufin's wife) are eligible. But don't submit fan-invented names for them, or I won't know whom you're talking about!
  • If they're very obscure, do consider writing a couple of lines to tell me who they are! I'm not a HoME expert and won't be familiar with everyone you send in.
  • I reserve the right not to include characters who I don't think really count: you can't, for example, submit "Maidros" and then argue that that's a completely different character to the more well-known Maedhros.
  • Actual voting will just be a straightforward "vote for whomever you like more" process, nothing to do with how obscure the blorbos are at that stage.
  • Let's... tentatively say the bracket will contain 64 characters? I'll keep the form open at least until Sunday 21st May and potentially longer, depending on how much interest this gets.
  • This is my first time running a tournament and I have no idea what else to actually say or how to do this lol. Tag will be #obscure tolkien blorbo, feel free to follow/block it as you prefer.

Let me know if you have any more questions, reblog for visibility, and happy submitting! And feel free to drop your submissions in the tags to this post so that people can avoid double-nominating their faves :)

Can we submit multiple blorbos?

@raointean Yes!! I’ve already submitted seven!

"The windows were curtainless, and the yellow moonlight, flooding in through the diamond panes, enabled one to see even colours, whilst it softened the wealth of dust which lay over all and disguised in some measure the ravages of time and the moth." - Jonathan Harker, may 15.

I love this paragraph so much, not only because it's a great written piece that captures the soft, and almost dreamy feeling of the room, but also it's the proof that Dracula isn't an all powerful entity that controls the castle to his whims.

The wind of the castle where Jonathan is situated is extremely well cared. From the curtains to the bed, all of it is perfectly curated so the guest/prisoner (Jonathan) can see, and feel the power along with the elegance that Dracula wants to convey.

However, this room was overlooked. Maybe the Count thought that Jonathan wouldn't try to enter here, or maybe he simply didn't deem this room important enough to restore to its former glory.

But it's the room that tells Jonathan how time is still going, how there is a reality which is not touched by Dracula. The Count was able to fool time itself with all of his powers, but everything else around him remembers.

The fabrics degrade, the gold peels, the moth eats, the paint chips, and the dust settles. Dracula may be able to retain the opulence of his castle, so it can resist the passage of time just like him, but there is always that reminder how it is just a carcass that hides the neglect within.

AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED

OUGHH OOH I actually just thought - what if Dracula modern au where the temporal dynamics are reversed??? Dracula as a horror of the digital age, a monster that leverages the ephemeral nature of modern communication against his victims??? The power of friendship and analog technology?????
