This is what happens when you think too much about an IP

literature tumblr is revolutionary in the way that it tricks kids into literary analysis by framing character analysis as headcanons it’s like wrapping a dog’s heartworm medication with lunch meat like gay moths to the flame

truly will never get over the fact that L from death note was designed specifically to be unattractive in contrast to the pretty boy looks of light, but in order to achieve that they just made him look like a pale emoboy with too much eyeliner. in the 2000s. what did they expect

Perfectly encapsulates how love is the currency in succession

Very interesting that ewan calls it a hearth but shiv calls it the sun. Your father built you a playground and you thought it was the whole world. Your father let you feel the warmth of his hearth and you thought it was the sun.

i learned that actor Danny Trejo has the most on-screen deaths of anyone in Hollywood history, with 65. Followed by Christopher Lee (60), Lance Henriksen (51), Vincent Price (41), Dennis Hopper (41), Boris Karloff (41), and John Hurt (39). (x)

Yet poor Sean Bean is stuck with the reputation for dying in every movie. Unfair.

Give him time, he still has many years of dying yet to come.

Also there’s the question of density vs quantity. If you make a hundred movies and die in 50, and someone else makes 30 movies and dies in 30, the first one has died more, but the second one has died more often per movie.

It’s the DPM ratio that really counts, IMO.

I’m so proud of the statistical side of tumblr for coming through on this.

Gwen is trans the same way that Peter B Parker is Jewish in that it's 100% entirely canon but if your ability to interpret visual media begins and ends with character dialogue you're going to miss 100% of the demographic information of any character because there's basically no situation where it would make thematic sense for Spider-Man to say "oh and by the way, I'm trans and Jewish"

personally i think there should have been at least one episode where sokka collects aang and zuko and is like, “looks like we’re running low on supplies.  time for a GUYS-ONLY field trip.  three days of hunting and fishing and polishing our swords.  y’know, manly warrior stuff.  (aang, sotto voce: actually sokka i’m a vegetarian as you know–)  you girls have fun sitting around braiding your hair and talking about your crushesand then the entire episode is just zuko and sokka lying around by a river, plucking blades of grass and staring up at the stars confiding in each other their deepest feelings and most secret insecurities while aang braids flower crowns, and whenever the screen cuts back to katara and toph and suki, they’re fighting and screaming and hacking away at river pirates and evil spirits and legions of assassins and hired mercenaries with swords.  you know, as girls do.

and when the boys finally drag themselves back to camp (they stayed up way too late discussing what true leadership really means and whether or not power always corrupts)  they find suki and toph and katara lounging around with black eyes and fresh bruises and bloodstained weapons and sokka shrieks, “what were you guys DOING while we were gone???”  and karata just shugs innocently and says in her sweetest voice, “oh, you know.  just girly things”

they are absolutely still wearing the crowns and they don’t have a single fish to show for their efforts

Can’t really argue with this

I never get tired of the thing where fantasy books name something by just calling it a word but capitalising it. Like oh shit, that person is a Wielder. The supernatural ability to see beyond matter called the Sight. Forces of Light and Darkness. The prohibited art of Knowing. A place simply known as The Blight. Awesome and horrible forces. The Force. You know something's getting bat shit wild when Fantasy Capitalisation comes into the picture. As in capitalising the letters, not the unholy act of seizing fantasy itself in order to churn profit off of it.

That is the work of evil creatures, like The Mouse.

i think we as a society need to start accepting that fictional love stories need to be a bit toxic for us to go insane over them… like, sometimes you kinda need the two parties to be obsessed with each other and fucked up and willing to bring each other back from the dead instead of moving on and go to therapy i’m sorry😔

I love how we all pretend Gwen was the cool suave one in ITSV as if she didn’t introduce herself as “GwaaaaaaaGwanda. My names gwanda. It’s African.” [realizes she is the whitest person to ever white] “I’m South African! I’m from. South Africa. Haha lol.” and then proceeds to lie so horribly that the only reason Miles didn’t catch onto her shit is because he was preoccupied with grabbing her shoulder in the world’s least smooth flirting move and then ripping her hair out

one thing i have noticed about integra is that she almost always lights a cigar, then snuffs it before its even half way used, and then not even a scene later she will light a brand new one. she does this in manga, classic, and ultimate. multiple times. it always bothers me because that is so much wasted product and money. i dont know what the fuck is wrong with her .

these shots are less than 5 seconds apart btw

and she lit the new cigar not even like 10 minutes later in the same room ?

Ursula K. Le Guin's 1969 novel The Left Hand of Darkness was a big deal in feminist science fiction for being one of the first widely popular and critically acclaimed works to do cool shit with sex and gender (which was certainly nothing new, but previous such works had rarely "taken off" the way LHoD did). It was criticized for referring to the genderfluid characters with the indefinite "he," which was a la mode in style guides at the time, instead of using alternating or gender-neutral pronouns. In time Le Guin came to agree with this criticism; she considered her decision not to take things further one of her biggest literary regrets, stating that "I am haunted and bedeviled by the matter of the pronouns."

I tell you this only because the phrase "I am haunted and bedeviled by the matter of the pronouns" is one I think about a lot.

One of my favorite tropes is character with a nasty toxic personality who tries very hard to do the right thing anyway

I like my protagonists sad, tired, bitter, fully convinced they will never get the recognition they deserve, but they still gotta get up in the morning and be a good person

Frodo’s a nepo baby when you think about it but like for sucky things. That’s your uncle’s evil ring? That’s your uncle’s wizard that took you on an adventure? That’s your uncle’s feud with a homicidal gremlin man that’s after your uncle’s ring? Great
