KaibaCorp Presents: Pod of Greed

@podofgreed / podofgreed.tumblr.com

We do a Podcast where we watch yugioh and talk shit about it. Hosted by Sarah, Max, Dan, Argyle, Elliott and Audrey. Visit us at kaiba.online

I love the comments on this video about how card game-focused Yu-Gi-Oh’s worldbuilding became over time.

“Ironically, despite Kaiba’s attempt to redefine Kaiba Corp as a game company instead of arms manufacturing, he turned Duel Monsters into the world’s weapon.”

“Can we take a moment to appreciate how customer friendly Kaiba’s products are though? In the finale of GX Jaden dueled Yugi, who was wielding a duel disk that was roughly 10 years behind his own model and they were still compatible”

“This video doesn’t even mention the time in GX where Kaiba fired trading cards into space that were designed by children so they could be bombarded by space rays and gain superpowers. The more you follow this series the more you realize that it’s also the story where a supervillain successfully reshapes the world in his image, died beloved, successful, unrepentant, and accomplished all his goals,  except for the only one that really mattered: beating someone in a card game.”

“Kaiba didn’t just change an entire city’s way of doing things, or even the entire world for that matter. He literally changed how villains try to conquer the world. He’s so influential that villains are still playing his game.”

“Something else that is both hilarious and terrifying in 5Ds: the cops play Duel Monsters to catch lawbreakers. In fact, the rules of Duel Monsters are so immutable to the law and order of Neo Domino City that the bikes called Duel Runners are able to remotely hacked by the police to force a duel, and losing that duel shuts down your bike. The rules of Duel Monsters sit above the police in terms of hierarchy, since if they could hack Duel Runners to force a duel, they could probably just shut down your bike remotely. I like to imagine Kaiba is sitting on his capitalist throne saying “If a criminal can beat you in a duel, then what authority do you have to catch them”, and just forces the police to adapt to his survival-of-the-duelist world that he made.“

“Without card games, people like dartz would be invincible“

So a known absurdly powerful and well-connected villain sets up a universally known card-battler game, with non-lethal stakes, whose rules are obeyed by even the most depraved and dangerous villains as a primary method of conflict resolution.

The world of Yu-Gi-Oh runs on Touhou rules, is what you’re saying.

Yugioh protags ranked from most to least likely to do a Fortnite dance

  1. Yuya (Can do it, will do it, and will do so with incredible skill and enthusiasm)
  2. Yuga (Has enough little kid energy to pull it off)
  3. Yuma (Can only floss but he's very enthusiastic about it)
  4. Jaden (Can and will do it but he's not very good at it)
  5. Yugi (Learned how to do a few from Tea but too self-conscious to do them otherwise. Yami would take over and do it for him if the situation deemed it necessary.)
  6. Yusaku (Knows about them but refuses to engage)
  7. Yusei (Doesn't know what a "Fort Night Dance" is and would not want to do one if you told him about them)

I haven't watched go rush, lemme know your opinions in the tags.

Finally, a new guy shows up! His name's Crow and he's the Robin Hood of card games. Could he be of great importance?

Listeners, we're recording tomorrow!

This week, we're talking about episodes 8, 9, and 10 of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D''s!

Yusei has been sent to The Hive, where the worst of the worst of The Facility's prisoners are sent. Now he must duel for his freedom against the corrupt, cheating Chief Armstrong!

Meanwhile, Jack Atlas is taking the fact that he technically lost a duel poorly, and while coping with this must have a rematch duel the previous title holder, Hunter Pace!

Send us questions about flaming skulls, smuggling cards, and shocking duels!

Let's duel

I'll go first. I summon one monster in face-down defense position and end my turn.

Draw Phase, nothing on Standby

Main 1, NoC, targeting your face-down

Good play.

I banish my face-down Giant Germ, as well as all other copies from my Deck.

No need, it's not a Flip monster.

Set one monster, two backrow, pass.

Draw, Standby, Main 1. Lucky draw, I play Heavy Storm. Can you negate?

Response, activate Crush Card Virus, tributing my set Sangan

Chain. I activate Herald of Purple Light's effect, sending it and Dark Honest to the GY to negate the activation of Crush Card Virus.

Sangan resolves, Emerald Tortoise to hand. My other Set was Torrential

Chain resolves. Still in Main Phase 1, I banish Herald and Dark Honest from my GY to Special Summon BLS.

Move to battle phase, attack directly.

Listeners, we are recording tomorrow afternoon!

This week we're watching Episodes 6 and 7 of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's!

Yusei Fudo has been arrested...and now he has to duel the biggest, meanest inmate, Bolt Tanner!

Listeners, today we are recording our FIRST episode on Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and covering the first two episodes!

It is the cyberpunk future, and the newest way of dueling is on motorcycles called Duel Runners. Our hero, Yusei Fudo, is a biker punk living in The Satellite, a prison/recycling center where those cast away by society must live out their days. He had a friend named Jack Atlas who betrayed him and rose to the top. He is now trying to get out with his Duel Runner he built out of scraps. But first, he's got to deal with two enemy duelists: the beat cop Trudge, who holds a grudge, and a bully who wants his duel runner.
