fuck that psychokinetic penthouse light show bullshit in theater square… making oda carry this briefcase was tachibana’s ultimate power move. like, imagine you are oda and you’ve been desperately campaigning to be mrs. tachibana real estate for years and then one night your hot boss finds some pretty young thing shivering in the rain in a cardboard box on the side of the road and not only does he bring his new sugar baby home and immediately drape him in his finest versace bathrobe, he also makes you supervise his new sugar baby at work… and then less than 72 hours later, he makes you come with him to the tojo hq courthouse so you can carry his sugar daddy dowry briefcase down the aisle, like some kind of sick and twisted ring-bearer. this was a brutal act of petty gay psychological warfare. tachibana wanted this shit to hurt and he wanted it to hurt as much as possible. not to give oda any kind of credit or sympathy here but i’m honestly amazed he didn’t get into the company car after this and immediately drive all three of them into oncoming traffic

it’s a mound of flesh, right? and it keeps forming eyes capable of looking at you. and the longer you look at it, the more openings appear. and at first the openings are full of what looks like legs, which move aside to reveal a flower, which unfurls to reveal a fleshy orifice studded with teeth moving towards you with great power and longing.
and it’s like, the central tragedy is that none of these men know each other on a level intimate enough to see through the imitation. when keith david turns and asks them how they’re supposed to tell if he’s an imitation or not, none of them can honestly say that they know him well enough to test how deeply it runs; he may as well be a stranger to him. when baby slut kurt russell mentions that the long johns could be anybody’s, it means that he isn’t able to tell whose they are by taking a good long whiff of the crotch and armpits. the secret weapon that could have successfully circumvented the thing was the time these men should have spent intimately exploring each other’s bodies. I have a job interview tomorrow. I need to get this out of my system now.
having by now gotten the job for which I was interviewing, I think where I was going with this was that, the constantly moving shifting expanding de-categorizing of the Thing is its own horror vehicle by virtue of the fact that every other body in that film very much wants to be its own discrete category, unknowable and untouchable to the other bodies around it. and the more you look at the Thing, the more there is of it; the more openings it has, the more eyes it will form for which to see you, the more limbs it will form for which to touch and know you. and these men do not want to touch and see and know each other. they do not want the joyous erotic sound of each other's stevie wonder albums to enter their ears. they do not want the joint that touches their lips to touch the lips of another man. the first and only horror of the Thing is its drive to touch and know and queer the coherent category that is the human body. I will be washing dishes in the back of a bakery while blasting mongolian throat singing if anyone has any further questions.

I used to work for a trade book reviewer where I got payed to review people's books, and one of the rules of that review company is one that I think is just super useful to media analysis as a whole, and that is, we were told never to critique media for what it didn't do but only for what it did.
So, for instance, I couldn't say "this book didn't give its characters strong agency or goals". I instead had to say, "the characters in this book acted in ways that often felt misaligned with their characterization as if they were being pulled by the plot."
I think this is really important because a lot of "critiques" people give, if subverted to address what the book does instead of what it doesn't do, actually read pretty nonsensical. For instance, "none of the characters were unique" becomes "all of the characters read like other characters that exist in other media", which like... okay? That's not really a critique. It's just how fiction works. Or "none of the characters were likeable" becomes "all of the characters, at some point or another, did things that I found disagreeable or annoying" which is literally how every book works?
It also keeps you from holding a book to a standard it never sought to meet. "The world building in this book simply wasn't complex enough" becomes "The world building in this book was very simple", which, yes, good, that can actually be a good thing. Many books aspire to this. It's not actually a negative critique. Or "The stakes weren't very high and the climax didn't really offer any major plot twists or turns" becomes "The stakes were low and and the ending was quite predictable", which, if this is a cute romcom is exactly what I'm looking for.
Not to mention, I think this really helps to deconstruct a lot of the biases we carry into fiction. Characters not having strong agency isn't inherently bad. Characters who react to their surroundings can make a good story, so saying "the characters didn't have enough agency" is kind of weak, but when you flip it to say "the characters acted misaligned from their characterization" we can now see that the *real* problem here isn't that they lacked agency but that this lack of agency is inconsistent with the type of character that they are. a character this strong-willed *should* have more agency even if a weak-willed character might not.
So it's just a really simple way of framing the way I critique books that I think has really helped to show the difference between "this book is bad" and "this book didn't meet my personal preferences", but also, as someone talking about books, I think it helps give other people a clearer idea of what the book actually looks like so they can decide for themselves if it's worth their time.
I always feel so worried about anyone I know who's 22-23 because I know those ages are the most hyped up yet shatteringly lonely times for most young adults when they expect so much from themselves and have been set up to fail at the same time but don't see that yet because they did everything they were supposed to and have probably started to feel so lonely and don't understand why seeing friends is suddenly getting way harder and time is going faster than ever
Those are like the speed batting ages where you are swinging so hard so fast trying to get this and you're striking out and even when you do hit you realize your just running in a circle and it starts to weigh on you and no one else is acknowledging it.
If you're 22-23 it's okay keep going, please try and remember to eat and sleep well and that there's nothing for you to win at, and you're not done changing no matter how set things feel

I think my favourite thing about tumblr mutuals is how it lets me really lean in to loving people in the simplest of ways
And by that I mean - I don't really know my mutuals extremely well, for the most part. I know pieces of them - maybe a name, maybe about their pets, or what area of the world they live in, or what fandoms they like, or little things they love about the world. Maybe about their sorrows, too. But little things. Things that feel ok to share on an open platform.
But they're still my beloved mutuals. And I still love them. So I get to leave nice little messages, or tell them that I love what they're writing, or send condolences in their replies when something hard happens. I can try and make this person who I don't really know that well smile, or feel a little bit loved, so why wouldn't I try?
And my mutuals do the same for me! I get tagged in posts, or people send me asks for an ask meme, or like the silly things I post. Little bits of love sent my way all the time.
I dunno. I just love that this platform lets us try and make people's day just a little bit brighter, simply by knowing that someone out there, halfway across the world, is smiling at you and wishing you well and sending you love through frog pictures or fandom gifs. Thats all.
