when I was a kid I had an old tv in my room that would always turn to unwatchable static in the middle of shows but one night my sister and I were watching Naruto & every time Kakashi was on-screen the static cleared so we were like “hahaha the tv looooves Kakashi.”
I had a Kakashi bookmark so we held it up against the screen as a joke but the static actually cleared up. Mystified, we tried different bookmarks and objects with the same plastic material but nothing else worked, only the Kakashi bookmark.
We ended up taping it to the corner of the screen and it stayed there for 11 years until we moved out. When I was older people would be like “can you move the bookmark off the screen” bc it did sort of block a bit of the view but I would demonstrate the static issue and everyone was always just like “huh. what the hell?? well…alright.”

I had a similar tv! It was a tv with a built in dvd and vcr because it was in college and I’m apparently old now. But! The dvd player never wanted to play- unless it was Chicago (2002). First, we would put that dvd in, let it start, and then swap it for the movie we really wanted to watch. It got to the point where we would put in the dvd we wanted and sing “he had it coming!!!” At the screen at volume. Fucking worked *every time*

West Papua’s Indigenous people have called for a boycott of KitKat, Smarties and Aero chocolate, Oreo biscuits and Ritz crackers, and the cosmetics brands Pantene and Herbal Essences, over alleged ecocide in their territory.
All are products that contain palm oil and are made, say the campaigners, by companies that source the ingredient directly from West Papua, which has been under Indonesian control since 1963 and where thousands of acres of rainforest are being cleared for agriculture.
More than 90 West Papuan tribes, political organisations and religious groups have endorsed the call for a boycott, which they say should continue until the people of West Papua are given the right to self-determination.
Raki Ap, a spokesperson for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua, which is overseeing the call, said: “These products are linked to human rights violations, in the first place, because West Papuans are being forced, with violence, to get off the land where they’ve lived for thousands of years, which has now resulted in ecocide.
“This is a signal to the countries who are dealing with Indonesia, especially those in the Pacific region, to take notice of who they’re dealing with and how they are basically allowing Indonesia to continue the colonial project in West Papua, the human rights violations, and also ecocide.”
West Papuans say more than 500,000 of their people have been killed by the occupation in the past six decades, while millions of acres of their ancestral lands have been destroyed for corporate profit. Indonesia, already the world’s largest palm oil exporter, is now breaking ground in West Papua on the world’s biggest single palm oil plantation, as well as a sugar cane and biofuel plantation that will be the largest deforestation project ever launched.
“West Papuans’, especially the ULMWP, position is very clear: we are a modern-day colony,” said Ap, speaking from the Netherlands.
“Indonesia hijacked the right to self-determination in 1962 when the Netherlands and Indonesia signed an agreement without any consultation in West Papua … After that, in 1969, there was a so-called referendum, which wasn’t fair, which wasn’t under international law, one man, one vote: just 1,025 men were handpicked at gunpoint to vote for integration to Indonesia.
“So this is the foundation of the Indonesia’s colonial project. When we became part of Indonesia against our will, basically the genocide unfolded.”
hi! let me share a wonderful resource with everyone
obviously, palm oil is a huge and massive issue causing immense damage to rich flourishing ecosystems. the process of planting palm means removing basically everything that was there before it, most often with burning techniques. yes, as in burning entire swaths of jungle/forest and all of its inhabitants in order to have land for a shitty monoculture for capital gain that never ever benefits the indigenous communities. the palm oil industry is an example of why #landback matters for all indigenous people across the globe and a perfect example pf how capitalism and colonialism directly harms all life forms. humans, animals, and plants.
if you want to do your best to avoid palm oils and giving money to bastard companies, i heavily recommend the app named PalmOil Scan made by the WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums). it’s an app that helps you learn more about the palm oil prevalence in the foods you eat. take an evening with the app, and scan things in your pantry closet/food storage areas. it may be a sobering experience, but you will be much better informed in the end.

It's worth noting that all these holidays start at sundown the night before, which is especially important in the case of Yom Kippur, as people might need to leave things early to go eat before the holiday begins if they're planning on fasting.
Don't schedule things like tests the evening before these dates either, as synagogues commonly have evening services then (like Erev Rosh Hashanah on September 22nd this year and Kol Nidrei on October 1st)

Now that I’m revisiting the AtLA fandom it’s time for a segment I like to call “Baby Emma had good ideas but bad execution.” Today’s feature: Leverage au.
- Hitter: you’d think it would be Toph, but no, it’s Katara. This girl is down to fight 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. She can and has fought everyone. She traveled to the other side of the world to learn how to fight everyone. She fought her own teacher for the right to learn how to fight everyone. She worked hard for the ability to throw down whenever she willed it and by god is she going to use that knowledge.
- Hacker: obviously Sokka. He designs the gadgets, he comes up with the wacky fake identities, he juggles the big picture intelligence so the rest of the team can focus on the con. Canon doesn’t have computers but I have no doubt in my mind that Sokka would be a “knowledge is power” geek.
- Grifter: this is where Toph shines. Sure, she can fight, but she’s been lying for over half her life. She tricked her parents into thinking she was helpless, bluffed her way into the Earth King’s palace, and robbed an entire town. Nobody else can read their marks like a human polygraph machine. She works the floor like she belongs there. Because she does.
- Thief: Zuko is the only person on this godforsaken team who is actually good at stealth. He has broken into strongholds from all three (extant) nations while they were on high alert. He hid after an assassination attempt by stowing away on the same boat as the guy who tried to kill him. This boy is good at what he does.
- Mastermind:
ONLY THE AVATAR CAN MASTER ALL FOUR TYPES OF CRIMINALS AND RESTORE BALANCE TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMokay I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out! Aang has strong charisma, improvises well, and is good at thinking outside the box. He’s a little naive in canon, but he’s also twelve, and was raised in a monastary. He’s a very slippery character when you look at him closely, and he has the moral conviction and thrill-seeking tendencies that someone leading a team of 21st century Robin Hoods would need.

he approached his goal (stop the tribes from fighting) using the resources and things he had–the clout of being the Avatar, and the knowledge that other people know he’s 100 years old and he can just assert that with the aforementioned avatar clout. And he just bald-faced lied his way into resolving the conflict
is that really a good or morally solid way to solve the conflict? not really! but that’s genuinely something interesting I think the Great Divide contributes to aang’s character, and it’s actually something that, if memory serves, comes up again
his willingness to solve problems with words but his lack of maturity leading him to therefore simply lie his way out of corners–and that lack of maturity and dexterity in lying meaning they then bite him in the ass later
but Aang as a mastermind means he has the maturity and learning to actually make use of his silver tongue and willingness to do execute plan will achieve his goal, whatever that may be
this is a bit rambling lmao but hopefully the point comes across

can we please please please learn to differentiate between things that are good but devalued because of their association with women (caring for children, being compassionate), things that are neutral but seen negatively because of their association with women (the colour pink, having long hair), and things that are bad but associated with women because of misogyny (being materialistic, being stupid) because otherwise we’re gonna keep getting takes like “being gender nonconforming is anti feminist” and “not studying for your classes is feminist”

Edit: this has gotten a huge amount of traction (fibrearts tumblr is a, uh, tight-knit community it seems!) so I am adding this note to state that I checked Lola Cody's website and can confirm: There is no dye in her work. She uses exclusively hand-spun Churro wool sheared from her home-raised sheep flock. It's all natural colours!
