New devlog: Planets

Development diary #5 is out on the website.

And since this tumblr is new, here's a recap of the preceding four:

  1. Welcome: What's a Voyageur anyway and when can I have it?
  2. Procedural Text: What's this about procedural generation and unique worlds?
  3. Alignments: You mentioned alignments. What's an alignment, precious?
  4. Story: What do you mean, trait-based narrative?

I'm really interested in what Tumblr thinks of the alignments, actually - what's yours?

So I'm adding in text to planet descriptions that talks about the local networks/meshnets you find in planets. Essentially, what their local internet looks like.

Rejected planet description text: "The small town you land on is a grid of prefab dwellings, quiet in the flesh but loud in the mesh."

Hi Bruno,I'm a fan of your previous works, and I can't help but ask if this game, as text-heavy as it is, will be accessible with VoiceOver? What is it coded in? If unity, it will not be accessible. VoiceOver is the screen reader for the blind in iOS, Talkback for Android. I really want a proceedurly generated game like this. Will the stories also be randomly generated, as well as the characters you bring onto your crew?

Good of you to remind me - I just checked a recent build on my phone and found that it does work with Talkback; I’m not doing in-device testing of iOS builds myself yet but I presume it works with VoiceOver as well; Voyageur isn’t built using Unity or a traditional graphical game engine, so the in-game text is actual text that the OS can read, and the interface is structured like a web page.

I’m not sure how good the actual UX is for a screen reader user, however. Closer to release I’ll be looking into how much pre-release time and resources I can allocate to built-in accessibility features, such as a text-only mode for screenreader users, and colorblind/high contrast mode. But at the very least you can expect the screen reader to be able to read the text.

Perhaps a bit early, but: do you have a plan to make a PC port if there is economic demand for it?

There are no concrete plans for a PC port at this stage; it’s a little bit backwards, but it really depends on how the mobile version does.

Hello, Tumblr!

Voyageur is a literary RPG set in an infinite, procedural galaxy, set to come out for iOS and Android around October-December of this year. I'm a small one-man dev team (bio) working on it with the invaluable aid of Fundbetter.

I'll be posting screenshots and links to dev diaries on Tumblr, but also some more... Tumblr-specific content. But the real reason to be coming into Tumblr is that you can ask me things here.
