I rly wanna start posting Zelink comics with Game Grumps memes
When schools offer free meals for everyone, local families reduce grocery spending. Large chains respond by dropping prices, amplifying benefits to the broader community.
Education and nutrition depend on each other.
I think the issue of light pollution really shows just how poorly our current system is built to handle environmental issues. We know light pollution has negative effects on humans and animals. We know how to address it. And because light doesn't stick around like other pollutants, there's nothing to clean up, no lasting damage to address. All we have to do is simply stop producing so much excess light at night and the problem is immediately ameliorated. But because it would cost money to switch over to better lighting systems, because it would make it harder for businesses to advertise their presence to customers at night if they couldn't just blast light everywhere and light up billboards (or even worse, light up drone swarms in the sky), and because there is no direct monetary profit to be gained from this endeavor, it's basically worthless to those in charge.
So it's no wonder so little has been done to address something like climate change, even though the stakes are so much greater and the effects are so much longer lasting. Since nobody wants to bear the monetary burden required to address the issue, all we get are bandaids and half-measures rather than actual solutions. If we want to make actual progress, we need an approach that ignores any question of profitability, and that can't happen under capitalism.
im so understimulated i need to sink my teeth into flesh or something
i’ve heard a lot of people say “don’t reach out to your friends first and see how many people will remain in your life. those are your true friends” and i get it. it sucks and it’s tiring constantly being the one to message first, to initiate hang outs but don’t take this so literally. some friendships require initiation. i have lost touch with so many people who genuinely cared about me and wanted me in their life because i stopped reaching out. it’s a hard pill to swallow but honestly some people just suck at it and it doesn’t mean they don’t love and value you. i’ve reconnected with some people over the past few months and it’s crazy how genuinely happy they are to see me and how engaged they are in the conversation. i just think sometimes we’re too harsh on each other & too quick to emphasize other peoples flaws and remove them from our lives but then we’ll all be alone and what’s the point of life then!!!!
Does anyone have an update on where things are at with the writers strike? It's disappeared from my various feeds and algorithms.
The writers' strike is ongoing and the studios are still not returning to the negotiating table. Unfortunately a lot of the coverage has tapered off because we're on 50+ days of striking and it's not new anymore. The last strike in 2007 lasted 100 days, so don't be surprised if this strike lasts as long, or even longer.
The biggest recent news is that the Directors' Guild of America (DGA) voted to ratify their new agreement with the studios (article from June 23), and it appears likely that the actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) will also take a deal instead of striking (article from June 24). Although this is disappointing news, it's completely expected. During previous strikes, the WGA held its own without other unions going on strike. Which is to say—don't be disheartened by the news that there won't be a triple strike. The WGA is strong enough!
Please keep vocally supporting the WGA online to keep the pressure on the studios & to keep WGA members motivated and encouraged! There are many ongoing donation drives, such as the Star Trek fan snack squad (Twitter account required to DM the organizer) and the Our Flag Means Death snack squad (opens the PayPal fundraising page—no Twitter required). There's a longer list of ongoing donation drives here.
The Entertainment Community Fund is also always accepting donations to support entertainment workers affected by the strike. Please boost and encourage your friends to keep supporting the strike. Hashtag #IStandWithTheWGA #DoTheWriteThing to boost the cause!
I’m sorry. I’m just. Everyone shut up about the ethics of celebrating/mourning billionaires who die in outrageous ways. This is now the funniest thing: an article mentioning that James Cameron once visited the site of the Titanic
Cameron had previously traveled to the Titanic wreckage, including on Sept. 11, 2001, in a submersible vessel.
You are well known movie director James Cameron. You make a box office hit about a sunken ship. You visit the sunken ship in a once in a lifetime experience. It is amazing. Awe inspiring. Soul changing. Your submersible surfaces. The radio crackles to life. You are about to hear that you missed a Pretty Big Event
having adhd and continuously putting off important tasks is so fucking embarrassing like i want to i WANT to get through this important, time-sensitive task but idk how to explain to you that my brain is just refusing to compartmentalize and yeah i’m doing it last minute or yeah the date i was supposed to do it by is a week behind me now do you think i’m HAPPY about that do you think it doesn’t eat at me from the inside to know i’m incapable of doing something important on time sometimes do you think i’m telling you about this now because i WANT to feel your judgement over my failings and not because i have to explain myself somehow???
adhd is fucking embarrassing and i wish some people online would stop making it a funny silly quirky thing to have lmao
We need more of this
I'm not a PoC but this is just incredible, *exceptional*, culturally sensitive patient care, period. Absolutely should be shared with every healthcare professional I know.
We should always keep in mind that we are treating an entire person, not simply their condition, and the effects seemingly minor kindnesses can have on them long after they leave our care.
If you want to support black doctors who are just starting out, Farrah-Amoy Fullerton, a fourth-year med student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham just set up a way for people to help black fourth year med students transition to their residencie. This often means moving to a new city where they won't get a paycheck for weeks. Black students are also less likely to have access to generational wealth to keep them afloat during school. So if you have a few bucks and want to buy a graduation gift for a future black doctor, check out this article or search #medgradwishlist on twitter.
We need more black doctors to because doctors are often untrained on how to diagnose conditions in black peoples vs white people and are taught black have a higher pain tolerance and just a whole bunch of other ridiculous things........ black people need black doctors
You know? Sometimes I'm bothered by the way fandom here addresses femininity in comic book characters, particularly the ones traditionally oversexualized. It's like the very aspect of femininity becomes linked to the hypersexualization, and therefore both must be eliminated together.
Now, I understand that butch/gnc women are starved for rep and I love seeing people draw or discuss their own interpretations or incarnations of a character. At the same time, it feels like a slap in the face to see a cool fanart with a caption about how "____ would never wear that gross outfit! Here's a better look". To look at a character and think "She looks cute! I'd love to draw/cosplay that" and see fanart of her where she looks completely different, pointing to her comic outfit saying, "this thing set feminism back 10 years!" It's annoying to see people take a character like starfire, canonically a supermodel, and condescendingly explain why their masc version is superior in the description of a cute fanart I wouldve otherwise reblogged!
I regularly see people on her discuss costumes in terms of the "male gaze" While failing to understand that the term describes narrative framing, not the outfit itself. People will look at the costume that I, as an ace woman, would wear and describe how it's designed to sexualize and appeal to men, how no woman would ever hear that, and how another outfit is better because it suits the "female gaze". Male gaze is how you frame a character, centering a panel on her ass or tits instead of her face. A very revealing outfit, or even a nude figure framed with respect and agency doesn't fall into this.
I've seen black canary or zatanna's fish nets "impractical", "uncomfortable", or "ridiculously oversexualized" as if those aren't standard dancers clothes, built for movement. Was I dressing impractically, or hypersexualizong myself when I was 16 wearing a leotard and tights in my dance performances? When I wore shorts and lacy fishnets outside because I thought it looked cute or fun?
There's this derision towards the feminine stemming from the remnants of tumblr's "I'm not like other girls" mentality that just bothers me immensely here. It's its own brand of internalized misogyny that I think people aren't even aware they're falling into. It's very possible to lift up different experiences of womanhood or gender without having to tear other people down at the same time, and some people on here need to learn that
I wanna add on to op coming from a different direction. This sort of thing also demonises queer women and especially the very butch women it's trying to represent by framing enjoying looking at those types of outfits as inherently predatory. Like especially coming at it as a transfem butch lesbian seeing people doing redesigns of characters that are more masc can be awesome but then to see the description calling their old outfit "male gazey" and sexualised and implying (or outright stating) that the only people who like these designs are creepy guys who objectify women (not what I think of men who enjoy these costumes ftr). Like people enjoy these costumes for a million reasons, some like op would wear them, some people find it attractive, some just think the outfit is cute, etc.

I have realized that the perfect form of media must have a delicate balance between absolutely heart wrenching pure emotional devastation and the most ridiculous nonsense you have ever seen in your whole life
Yes, the arrests are about trying to stop the Cop City protests. But not JUST about the Cop City protests. They're trying to stop any and all bail funds, any and all collective resistance to authoriantarism, any and all group efforts to put a damper on what the cops can and will do. They're hoping that even if nothing legally comes of these particular arrests, that the mere fact that you can be arrested for running a bail fund will put a chill on anyone else thinking about doing the same thing, everywhere else. So, keep an eye on this, but also keep supporting and donating to places you can help your fellows out.
And remember, ACAB.
