lmao-

@pineapplesarevalid

Looks like you’ve found my reblog blog- Congrats!

'can i copy your homework?'

'yeah just don't make it obvious'

Reminder that this is an experiment as per their official announcement (screenshot below).

Since this is an experiment, give your feedback to staff!

And remember to be specific on how this new navigation layout they are experimenting with is not working for you; hating it is one thing, but usability on different devices with different screen orientations, operating system, etc., would be much more impactful and meaningful.

My copy of @drchucktingle's book Camp Damascus has arrived! (The publishers were kind enough to send me an advanced copy when I mentioned that I had ordered a copy but time was not kind to me as it was Finish Good Omens and Wrap Things Up Before the Strike world, and I had no personal reading time. So I'm really looking forward to settling down to read it.)

let it be known that @neil-gaiman has been a true buckaroo from DAY ONE. always accepted my unique way and understood the sincerity of my trot and my art. thank you neil i appreciate you so much bud. i am humbled and honored by your support through the years. a buckaroo legend

"Think of the two major possibilities here: Either the studios owe untold millions to their talents and paying it out will decimate their stock prices, or they owe so little because there really is no money in streaming and the bubble of their entire 21st century business model will burst in spectacular fashion. And make no mistake: this is a bubble. This is the inevitable climax of a stockholder-driven hunger for infinite growth, despite the fact that, by design, such a thing cannot and should not exist. The infection of Wall Street has overwhelmed the entertainment industry beyond repair, leading to cultural vandals like David Zaslav to be appointed with the callous duty of strip-mining decades’ of artistic beauty for pennies of tax write-offs. The past and future are frivolous in comparison to the short-term demands that the line keep going up."

The curse of modern fandom is that it has allowed fans to get even closer to artists, but they won't view the artists as people.

Human limits, human mistakes, human feelings, human needs, are never ascribed to artists, and when other fans rightfully point out, "hey, humans are making this, maybe don't harass them or demand they cater to your personal tastes," it gets shut down under, "uh, people who make popular mainstream things are automatically Public Figures who are also probably rich, so eat the rich and destroy artists over every perceived minor fault. <3"

Even though there's, y'know, a really big strike currently going on because those artists are very much not rich or influential or in control of the bullshit.

The more friends I make in the various facets of the entertainment industry, and the more widely my own art gets shared, the more I realize that a lot of y'all genuinely don't see artists as human beings if they meet some arbitrary standard of Being Known Online.

There is no amount of online fame that makes someone subhuman and a valid target for blatant disrespect and harassment.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not actually own and control a piece of art just because you like it a lot. The artists are not subject to your personal whims and tastes. They owe you nothing.

fun fact about me: When I was 6 years old I sent so much hate mail to the president (the second Bush) that the mail carrier had to tell my mom I needed to stop before we got FBI’d

I was COMPLETELY unaware of the US political scene or why the adults in my life hated Bush, but I knew I hated him because he let people shoot wolves from helicopters and that’s mean and shitty

I also had a poor grasp on how stamps worked, so given that I wasn’t allowed to continually throw money away by putting stamps on my presidential hate mail, a lot of the times I just drew squares with little pictures inside on the corner.

Love, love, love reading more proof that everyone should encourage the children in their lives to write to elected officials--it teaches them about citizenship and can also be very funny.

When I taught second grade, one of the options for students who had finished their work was to write a letter to the president. I would send all of the letters in a big envelope at the end of every month.

Watching my students get more and more frustrated with him (and concerned about his wellbeing) was not the result I'd hoped for when I came up with the idea, but it was kind of hilarious.

See, Obama had a standard packet with information and activities about his dog he'd send in response to letters from very young citizens...and of course his office sent one back to our class every single time we sent mail.

So eventually all of the letters looked something like this:

Dear President Obama, I am writing about the environment. I am sad that the Great Barrier Reef is hurt. Also the Amazon Rainforest. Can you help? PLEASE DON'T WRITE BACK TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG AGAIN. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT BO. WE COMPLETED THE MAZE AND COLORED HIM IN. It is good that you love your pet a lot. But try to remember the environment. It is also important.

Loving this post, not least because it reminded me of this email and attachment that my kid's 5th grade teacher sent us last November.

Context: we are Canadian, our provincial government is currently conservative and the CUPE strike was for teachers and support staff at an adjacent school board that didn't affect my kid's school but was talked about with them in the current events/being active in your community sense.

This is the email I opened:

and this was the attachment:

I haven't thought about this for months, so thank you for inadvertently reminding me it existed so I could lose my shit laughing about it all over again!

This letter made my day!

🤣😂

One time I shared a post that contained (unbeknownst to me) incorrect information about how big anglerfish are and people sent me anon hate about it for years and accused me of being the center of a conspiracy to spread fish-based misinformation, I would occasionally get messages in my inbox out of the blue like "You're a terrible person for telling lies about fish and I hope you die," and I think that that more than anything else is the real Tumblr Dot Com experience

Anyway anglerfish are fucking huge. They're born the size of a Ford F250 and grow up to be six times taller than God.

I didn’t know that polished malachite didn’t react to water and when I saw a bathroom with a bunch of malachite in it I was like Holy Shit What A Bad Idea

And I got several messages telling me I was what was wrong with both tumblr and America and I should die

Anyway I don’t talk much on this site anymore

Very on brand for Tumblr to think "misinformation" means "being wrong about inconsequential trivia"

Btw I saw an anglerfish on my way to work earlier and that bitch was at least 500 apples tall

My best friend is an anglerfish, so I personally can confirm, at least 10,000 apples tall.

Damn that's like 2,000 Hello Kitties

it is insane how fucking tiny these buttons are did they not like. consider the concept of UI scaling like at all. did they not consider what theyd do if someone had a big monitor. what is this shit

why asre there two post buttons. why do i get little numbers next to 'home' and 'following' when btoh are giving me the exact same information. why is it that when you open the account view you have the exact same information on both sides of your screen. why is it that the activity popup obscuires the dashboard now instead of the 1000000 miles of empty space on my god damn desktop. did they not consider the concept of UI scaling at all?????

when i first saw people p[ostp about this i thought maybe they were overreacting because they hate twitter and change but like. whatever you think abotu the concept of 'putting all this shit on the left side of your screen' as a bold UI innovation or whatever in concept this shit is like. just straight up unfinished. like i legitimately dont understand how this was considered ready to roll out to users

why does the activity popup open on the ONE part of my screen i DONT want to be obscured when im using tumblr dot com!!

no seriously why is this information displayed twice one inch apart. im not being snarky when i say this genuinely just seems actually unfinished

dont talk to me or my three (3) 'activity' buttons that show up when you're already on the activity page ever again

still so fucking weird to go from real life, where a cis man being flamboyant/effeminate/camp is judged like 70+% by how he speaks and carries himself, to online queer communities, which often seem to have no concept of male gender non-conformity that doesn’t involve wearing a skirt

i promise you, a man can be fem to the point of being in danger while wearing literally exactly the same thing as a hypermasculine guy. a boring basic black suit. a t shirt and jeans. a UNIFORM. gender conformity is not only about what you wear

None of you have watched that heartbreaking scene in The Birdcage where Albert gives up wearing everything he likes to try and blend in for their son’s conservative prospective in-laws and is so awkward and uncomfortable that no one says much until finally he says, defeated, “I know what you’re thinking - dressed like this, I’m even more obvious, aren’t I?” and it shows.

Here, have your queer heart broken:

This is what I’m talking about. This is still literally how it is in most places in the Midwest if you’re trying to “pass” for straight/cis/whatever.

I cannot begin to describe how hard I cried when I saw this scene the first time and how confused my conservative family was as to why I was crying.

It’s so funny how literally the way a man holds his wrists is an indication of femininity but also people think it’s all about makeup and clothing. But we’re also at a point that if you have a suit that is any color other than black, dark grey, or navy, it’s flamboyant.

Men’s sartorial stylings are so rigidly controlled it’s painful. Tim Gunn here is at the very absolute bleeding edge of “acceptably masculine” here for most cishet men, just for some noticible stripes, patterns, and purple, and that’s before he even moves. This is how restricted it is.

But Trixie Mattel (out of drag here) wearing standard masculine garb is could still be deemed unacceptably feminine for body language alone.

This is why we talk about “toxic masculinity” – the idea that any expression of emotion besides anger or even wearing colorful clothes is non-masculine and therefore restricted is horrifying. It sucks! Men should be allowed to express themselves outside of a tiny box of acceptable behavior, because they’re, y'know, people, and people have a wide range of expression in the way they like to look and move and act. I honestly feel like it’s gotten worse over the last couple decades, too. If you look at men’s fashions from the 70s and even into the 80s, there’s a lot of style choices that look pretty cringe to us, but…. you also see a lot more color and pattern in suits than you do now. I’m not sure when this started to shift, or if it’s tied in to the increasing lack of color in all consumer products, but it sucks.
