Hi, just wanted to say your 3D modeling of Tanya looks amazing! What do you plan to use the model for?

Hello! Thanks for saying so! I’m mainly making her to learn and refine a handful of 3d skills. I will be rigging her, body and facial, so I’ll most likely end up importing her into an engine and have her flying around!

Tanya Von Degurechaff - Big Hair Update

Hello all, got a big update. I’ve tinkered before with xgen for a few projects, mainly creating hair cards, but this is the the first time taking it from start to finish! Lots of things to figure out and it was a slow start, but the momentum start rolling in near the end when that form really started to show! This time i’ll start off by showing the final result first! I realize this will also be the first time showing her full head render here :0

After so much time tinkering here it is! Kinda hard to think it’s already at this point! There will be a few adjustments of course but here she is! Teeny breakdown of the process:

Did the brow and lashes first to get myself up to speed with xGen again.

1st Clump pass after placing all my hair guides. SO many changes since this part.

Pass with several more clump modifiers and A BUNCHA masking.

Preview in viewport to get a better feel of where the look was going.

Addition of her cowlick and sides!

1st render! Color is completely off of course :U

Close-up test render of the lashes and brows.

And final render for the hair with the head and eyes implemented! Almost there! I say almost but a buncha changes still need to be done.Editing of the displacement map for better pore and lip details being viewed, eyebrow/eyelash being darked, experiment with a paler skin.

Also there is a 98 percent change I will be adding higher details to her coat. I’m not satisfied seeing it as it is now. Playing Hell Let Loose really made me consider the quality of my clothing haha. Also need to model her Mondragon rifle! And i plan to model all the intricate complexities! First time doing something like that as well, but i hope it doesn’t take too much time. Correction: as much time, hahahaaaa-

Tanya Von Degurechaff - Hair base sculpt

Hello all, here with an update!  Things have been slow despite wanting so, but my body demanded a break from being at my desk. Back again though!   Recently wrapped up making a base for Tanya’s hair. The plan was always to make a hair for her in xgen for that realistic feel. Still doing that, but I plan to make hair cards after for a game engine friendly version. So in the end there will be a sculpted hair for tanya, a cg version for renders in Vray, and a hair card ver for in-engine. That’s a lot of separate hairs! Why? Well, I want to be well rounded and practice as much as I can, its good opportunity even though it’ll add to the time till completion. Well without further ado I’ll start with the first version of her hair to the final.

First shot, really liked it, but the front view wasn’t quite doing it for me.

2nd version i yanked the side out, but didn’t feel close to what i wanted. Bang edits I liked though.

Did some swift edits to adjust the direction of the back if her hair. Closer but not quite there.

Aaannd finally here we are. A bit of brash edits and disregard for flow but It felt more accurate towards than anime style of hers. May do more edits today but it shouldn’t divert much in the end. Das all for now!

Tanya Von Degurchaff - Coat textures!

Hello, been awhile! Been busy with work, but have had some spare time lately! Got around to wrapping up her base textures for her outfit, Pants and boots included. It was silly but i was texturing without them for awhile... big whoops. Still, enjoying the progress thus far! Looking forward to adding all the nitty gritty details!!

Y-Strap bake update!

Hello all, coming in with a new ystrap update for the Tanya Von Degurechaff model. This one is personally exciting for me. Bakes are daunting and very time consuming, but they were actually simpler to figure out than I thought. A lot was learned on this segment of the pipeline and I look forward to all the time I’ll be cutting in the future! Here are the low poly with and without normals and AO.

Got some ambient occlusion errors here, but not a huge deal. I’ll be spending some time in photoshop cleaning that up.

The knife baked really nicely honestly. Its gets me pretty amped to do a ton of hard surface in the future.

Little details here the will go a long way on the strap. It’ll be tough to get a camera angel to show this off, but a pleasure to have included.

Definitely going to need some dynamic renders showing off her back.Too much detail not to!

Belt buckle baked in perfectly! Really nice seeing it all come together like this! A new update will be coming in shortly for the coat, then it’ll be another with it all together with normals and AO only. After that its nothing but texturing!

Tanya - Another y-Strap update

Update for Tanya von Degurechaff of Youjo Senki! I previously stated I wasn’t pleased with the y-strap, so I took some time to polish some things up there.

Started by focusing on areas that would be more worn due to a lot of handling, bending, and the assumed material it would be composed of.

Made sure to not go too far as well since I’ll still be applying materials with normals and plenty of pending. Just tried to picture what details I could add now to save me some time on the texturing phase. I recommend for anyone to take some time at this particular phase to sculpt in big or small details that can not only save time, but compliment your materials! Approaching projects like these with some foresight can keep things very streamlined in your pipeline. Also added a decal of the Empire of her belt buckle! That was very fun and super easy! Can’t believe I was ever intimidated to approach it! You can bet my next model will include more patterns and details similar to this!

And finally! I added some more segments to the knife! Not a lot of details added, but the set up is there for the materials I’ll be using for it. I don’t plan to render many shots focused on her knife, but I’d rather have it detailed just in case. You never know!

The gashes on the knife handle are there to express a cut from the knife. I imagined tanya slightly missing to strap her knife in the heat of battle. May not be a super noticeable thing, but imaging your character performing actions as if they were real and translating that into your sculpt can really make a difference and bring forth a good deal of immersion.

Well thats it for today! This update was slow but I’ll be picking it up from here. Learned a lot on zbrush and i’ll be doing projections today. After that I’ll showcase the coat and Ystrap as one. Till next time!

Y-strap progress!

Hello all! For this update I’ll be talking and showing the progress and thought process behind creating her y-strap as seen on the manga:

Initially I was going to stay loyal to the manga y-strap, but after getting close to wrapping up the coat I realized that staying faithful to it wouldn’t fit well with the aesthetic I was aiming for. I didn’t even realize it was a Y-strap initially. The world of Youjo Senki borrows from both world wars so with some help of fellow artist it was settled that I’d make a Y-strap based on the german ww2 equivalent:

Felt daunting to approach at first, but the pure aesthetic appeal it would add to the character is what honestly got me to model and add it. I’m really glad I decided to model it.

The version above is the high poly after making the low poly in maya. Making this was great practice and improvement towards speed and simplified modeling within maya, which is something I with to be swift and fluid in since after working on the project I realize I prefer a low to high pipeline rather than a high to low. I prefer to feel like I am working from a solid and meticulously built foundation. The next project will definitely be incorporating this.

I considered this model pretty much done honestly, it has been weeks since I looked at it. I was set on texturing right after finishing some edits on my coat, but looking at it again it is clear to me that there is a lot more work that must be done. The UVs are complete, so my next step will be recreating the high poly base in my maya with proper supporting edge loops and then going for a high detail pass in zbrush. This project may be a stepping stone for greater things, but I should take pride in it every step of the way,

Coat progress!

Here is the progress on the coat sculpt on its own. The main reference used comes from the manga directly. I did dedicate time to finding plenty of real life references from german uniforms in ww1 and 2 but found the illustrator was taking liberty with the design itself. Something not mentioned before is that I’m using this project as a massive learning experience. I have a lot of 3d knowledge but all of it is scattered around. This project will unify it all together towards one thing and also refine and learn new skills along the way. I’ll make another post specifying the aim for this down the line.

I’ll be sharing progress on a 3d model I have been putting lots of hours into. But before that I’d like to introduce the star behind the project itself, the Devil of the Rhine, Tanya von Degurechaff from Youjo Senki. The art posted are from 3 different iterations falling under the same name from my knowledge, the anime, light novel, and manga. Although most are familiar with her from the anime, the reason I’m posting all three is because I’m sampling the look from all three for the 3d model I am making, as well as taking plenty of liberties myself and adding things not present in all 3. The top top goals for this project are to have some cinematic renders for her and after to have an ingame model for some little gameplay purposes. Hopefully on that last one I have to see how I feel about it!
