So Windows has a new feature incoming called Recall where your computer will first, monitor everything you do with screenshots every couple of seconds and "process that" with an AI.

Hey, errrr, fuck no? This isn't merely because AI is really energy intensive to the point that it causes environmental damage. This is because it's basically surveilling what you are doing on your fucking desktop.

This AI is not going to be on your desktop, like all AI, it's going to be done on another server, "in the cloud" to be precise, so all those data and screenshot? They're going to go off to Microsoft. Microsoft are going to be monitoring what you do on your own computer.

Now of course Microsoft are going to be all "oooh, it's okay, we'll keep your data safe". They won't. Let me just remind you that evidence given over from Facebook has been used to prosecute a mother and daughter for an "illegal abortion", Microsoft will likely do the same.

And before someone goes "durrr, nuthin' to fear, nuthin to hide", let me remind you that you can be doing completely legal and righteous acts and still have the police on your arse. Are you an activist? Don't even need to be a hackivist, you can just be very vocal about something concerning and have the fucking police on your arse. They did this with environmental protesters in the UK. The culture war against transgender people looks likely to be heading in a direction wherein people looking for information on transgender people or help transitioning will be tracked down too. You have plenty to hide from the government, including your opinions and ideas.

Again, look into backing up your shit and switching to Linux Mint or Ubuntu to get away from Microsoft doing this shit.

watching this actually made me cry a little. i've long held that i think the support for anti-trans policies is a mile wide and an inch deep, and the majority of people who would oppose our existence in a survey or a ballot box do so out of ignorence in the truest sense of the word. Do so because they have little to no experience of us, do so because they don't see us in their communities, do so because we are not a part of their daily lives, and that if they were to see us there in front of them day in and day out, they would not so easily cast aside our rights and our humanity in favor of what they hear about us from conservative media outlets. This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say that, and seeing such a perfect example of it, especially in so dark a time, brings me to tears.

Marimo (毬藻) moss balls are actually a type of algae that grows spherically as it rolls in the water. Because they only grow 5mm a month, they are easy to take care of, but they are also very rare and can only be found in a few parts of the world including Japan & Iceland. Because of their rarity and beauty, a festival called Marimo Matsuri takes place every year in Hokkaido, Japan where all the marimo plants in the Lake Akanko are taken out, individually cleaned, and placed back into the water. Not only are they adorable, but they are considered a national treasure in Japan!

since it’s indigenous history month just wanted to point out that the marimo matsuri as its known actually began as a conservation effort led by ainu locals, marimo are really valuable to a lot of our community theology!! before this marimo were really threatened by harvesting and this activism is what led to their protection and revival today. 

lake akan (not akanko) is neighbored by an ainu village! The ‘cleaning’ is actually a blessing by elders in the ainu community and the importance of returning them is in the message of conservation and protecting their home

unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.

bonus it ALSO fills that dopamine hit of in-person shopping. “oh I didn’t go in looking for this but hmm, I’m tempted… I can’t resist… oh ho ho I have made some irresponsible decisions at the library today [carrying my stack of ten random books]” and then it doesn’t even matter if you don’t like them because a) free b) you’re gonna give them back anyway

Librarian here! Please please please please PLEASE do this! We don’t have any way to know if you read them, and we don’t care! We’re happy to see those books go out because that helps our stats. And that affects how much money we can get.

9th and 10th books of Binderary

This is one of my favorite Terror fics - a modern AU where everyone is participating in a knock-off baking competition called Barrow’s Baking Boys.  

This was the first story I knew I wanted to bind for Binderary.  I started the typeset way back in early January and decided to switch things up a bit and give formatting in GoogleDocs a try.  The story had a couple different narrative styles - voiceovers and interviews for the show, plus some conversations over text (a first for the stories I’ve bound).  So in addition to learning a new typesetting program I got to find a way to represent those distinctly, and in the process learned that google docs doesn’t maintain its formatting between firefox and chrome.  (That was a lot of misprints/glue sheets…)

I’m really pleased with the overall look of these books.  I was going for a very classic style and ended up using some printed marbled paper I hoarded for years, with a gray and blue check cardstock for the endpapers to kind of get the Bake Off gingham vibe.  The body text is a very safe Times New Roman, with IM Fell for the on-air narration & interviews, and Quintessential for the titles. 

This will always be my favorite gifset. Ever.
