The lesson of the game grumps controversies is the dangers of parasocial relationships and how that fandom in particular has been cultivated and conditioned into believing their idols are genuinely their friends and care about them even as the people behind the scenes have regularly abandoned, abused, silenced, and tossed aside their real friends in favor of protecting their brand.

I was a subscriber from literal day 1 and the attitude of “the grumps are my friedns!” has been around since all the way back then, at the founding of their subreddit and at no point has any one of the grumps made any attempts at nipping that in the bud, which really tips me off that it is intentional. That the term “lovelies” was not made to mock the types of weirdos who take advantage of their fanbase by giving them a cutesy name but just really is placating and making the fans feel like they’re special and matter to the grumps.
