http://www.wavemakergrants.org/2021-grantees/2bh97fm7rk3n8ap8gabfarla3p6k61                             Our project, Variety Reinspires, aims to use VR (Virtual Reality) to combat the isolation and limitation of freedoms that most seniors live with in our society because research has shown that more than 50% of seniors are experiencing depression and/or isolation, making loneliness among seniors a mental health epidemic larger than COVID-19. This project will provide opportunities for seniors to virtually leave the four walls of their community to check off bucket list items and engage with the world in ways they never thought were possible again. Running from a tablet onto paired headsets this will require virtually no training on the part of caregivers. #warholgrantee #wavemakergrants #warholfoundation #ooliteartscreatoraward #theelliesaward #locustprojects #MFC #miamifilmmakerscollective #VR #virtualreality #seniors #community #isolation #pandemic #artprojects

In 90 MILES, Cuban-American filmmaker Juan Carlos Zaldivar, recounts the strange twist of fate that propelled his family to risk their lives across one of the world's most treacherous stretches of water.
90 MILES (90 MILLAS) serves as a microcosm to the legacy of the historical conflict between the U.S. and Cuba, but its story echoes wherever there has been conflict around the world.
90 MILES (90 MILLAS) is Zaldivar's quest to piece together the twists--and consequences--of his family's journey into exile. Zaldivar's dramatic shift in ideology (he was once a 13-year-old loyalist of the Cuban Revolution) is traced with surprising balance and poise, allowing the film to withstand the test of time. Above all, the film is a search for understanding and healing between father and son by uncovering the emotional distance opened by the 90 miles of water between Cuba and the U.S.
90 MILES (90 MILLAS) illuminates the psychological ramifications of immigration within our personal identities and in the psyche of Americans.

Hesperus is Phosphorus was commissioned by the Miami Light project in 2016 for the Here and Now Festival.
Drawing its title from the famous sentence about the semantics of proper names by philosopher Gottlob Frege, the artist has created a series of paintings on glass that must be directly illuminated in order to be seen by human eyes. One of the paintings is activated by a video. Another video is projected on a mirror. A disembodied narrator walks with you in a 3D audio piece and an invisible star becomes a threshold you can walk through.
The famous Gottlob phrase “Hesperus is Phosphorus” refers to the Greek personifications of the evening and morning stars respectively, which, in fact, are the same planet, Venus.
Violenta Flores, who is known mostly for his film, audio and video installations, alters classical drawings and creates original phosphorescent paintings for "Hesperus is Phosphorus" to re-contextualize popular, iconic figures from classical and baroque iconography by re-inventing their surroundings and altering their gender-specific forms in comparison to the duality of the Eastern deity, Shiva.
In "Hesperus is Phosphorus" minimalist objects are actually paintings on glass that must be directly illuminated in order to be seen. These various works: the interactive paintings, a reflected video, a disembodied 3D audio narration and a light sculpture can be reflections on how impossible it is to be absolute within our own identities.
Installation components: The exhibition provides interactive engagement opportunities for participants through: • 3 video installations,  • a deceptive curtain, • a 3D audio experience, • a laser star that visitors can walk through • and a gestural performance.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Storytelling for Climate Action: Leveraging film, virtual reality and cultural strategy for impact. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
Research confirms that humans are story-based creatures. We live in narrative contexts, and information presented in narrative form often has a deeper, longer-lasting impact on our understanding and behavior. But is the climate advocacy community doing enough to leverage our best storytelling mediums to connect to and activate new (and existing) audiences? And for the creative community, how can we ensure our work will result in meaningful social impact? Each of our guest speakers will share their powerful storytelling projects with us, as well as their insights, lessons learned, and the challenges they face in telling stories that move people to climate action: • Swampscapes (Juan Carlos Zaldivar & Liz Miller), a VR and multi-platform exploration of Florida’s most endangered ecosystem, the Everglades • #ClimateWoke (Layel Camargo), a social media campaign uniting racial and social justice communities to re-center in solution-making the people first and worst impacted by climate crisis • Newtok (Katie Basile), the story of the remote Alaska Native (Yup'ik) village of Newtok, a community that is struggling to relocate in response to climate change-fueled erosion––but in the absence of federal funding ~Hosted by the Climate Advocacy Lab in partnership with the Climate Story Lab, a project of Exposure Labs & Doc Society.~
