“It’s totally possible to make a path that goes through every door exactly once”

Idk if I did it right

sorry!

it’s true you can’t draw one continuous line that would do the trick. but if the kitty and bunny set out by going through the doors they’re marked beside and each walked the certain way their colored arrows show at the same time their “collective path” as a team would go through each door only once. The moral of the story is actually about friendship , and cooperation, because in this world there are tasks you can’t do on your own.

im just fucking with you i’m pretty sure this has no right answer

What I love about tumblr is when we see a logic problem meant to be frustrating and/or unsolvable, we almost reflexively try to destroy it.

This website’s userbase is a chimp chewing through a Chinese finger trap

people who think harry kim is a boring character simply do not understand the horror and the comedy of being someone who for all intents and purposes should be destined for great things (see: non sequitur) but is instead facing a life spent trapped in a survival situation with the most unhinged codependent mildly toxic found family imaginable

fun facts!

  • leonardo da vinci was a year younger than christopher columbus.
  • stalin, freud, Ttto, trotsky and hitler walk into a bar……no really, it’s possible since they all lived in vienna in 1913.
  • aristotle tutored alexander the great.
  • abraham lincoln was twelve when napoleon bonaparte died.
  • an unusually well-traveled person in 5th century BC could have conceivably met confucius, lao tze, the buddha and socrates over the course of a seventy year life.
  • pharaohs and mammoths existed at the same time.
  • pocahontas and william shakespeare died, in the same country, less than a year apart from each other.
  • oxford university is older than the aztec empire.

the most fascinating and realistic thing about Quark’s misogyny is that it benefits no one, not even himself, and he’s still ludicrously invested in it

“Ferengi women should be submissive! Sexual objectification is good for business! Also on an unrelated note here are my twelve alien ex-girlfriends, all of whom can pound my ass, the one Ferengi woman I had a crush on because she was cross dressing that one time, and my constant, debilitating anxiety about me & Rom’s relative failure to live up to arbitrary measures of masculine success. This is working great for me.”

I think this is a really good point- is he a gross misogynist? Yup. Is he a character feminists can love? Yup.

Why? Because his misogyny is shown to be harmful, to himself and all his relationships and goals. To the extent he has moments when he is behaving contrary to it, things are better. For himself, for those he knows, for his overall existence as a person who is capable of being healthy and happy and good.

It is all done with exaggeration and a layer of “look at this alien nonsense”, but it is also one of the most realistic depictions of how misogyny plays out in real life. It is a dysfunction that makes everything worse, but often doesn’t shatter connections between people.

Jadzia is genuinely friends with Quark. Kira sees him as an ally during the Dominion occupation and other Station crisis. Neither women are interested in letting his bullshit dictate squat. His romances follow similar patterns. He behaves appropriately or gets shit, loses things that he can barely acknowledge to himself that he values. They lose patience with him. He does better and earns some respect. Does worse and loses some.

That is what actually happens when men espouse or behave in misogynist ways. We all live in a patriarchal world. Every relationship struggles with it in some way– but media almost never portrays it that way. “Bad men’s” misogyny is extreme, and punished with absolutes. “Good guy’s” misogyny is excused (even when it is also extreme or blatantly immediately toxic) or permitted or even framed as good itself and they are rewarded regardless.

With Quark, you have a man capable of being terrible and being decent and the people around him respond to his behavior and it in turn influences what he does. It shows the actual connection between the social reality of patriarchy and individual relationships– rather than attempting to HIDE patriarchy behind a individualized coding of “good guy/bad guy”.

Oh lord this was so long and probably should be edited, but I am on mobile so sorry…

I love how NOT ONE of Quark’s romantic partners or crushes are ever submissive and servile.

“Ugh, you people don’t appreciate how much better it is when your females are unclothed and submissive. Now meet my ex-girlfriend Natima, a Cardassian political radical and dissident who’s looking to overthrow the totalitarian government in favor of equality. Also, here’s my ex-wife Grilka, a Klingon warrior whom I married so she could lead her house with honor and defeat the schemings of general douche D’Ghor.”

Quark is also a great deconstruction of the “product of their time” mentality that gives so many older people the pass for their bigoted views.  While he’s never objectively progressive, early-seasons Quark is almost radical by the standards of Ferengi society.  By the end of the show (spoilers, I guess.  Does it count, show has been out for twenty years) while Quark’s political views have not changed appreciably, Ferengi society has moved past him.  Quark essentially turned from a liberal to a conservative by standing still, and it’s painted as his failure to learn and change.  He explicitly doesn’t get a pass because “that’s just how he was raised”

Gosh I just love book Legolas. He's immortal. He's a teenager. Elrond picks him instead of Glorfindel because he's average and won't draw attention to the Fellowship. He's the comic relief guy and resident Little Shit, but he can also shoot a Nazgul out of the sky in the pitch black like a one-man elf anti-aircraft defense system. He wants everyone to know that he's, like, really old. He forgets the task at hand because he wants to look at trees. His greatest qualities are that he can become friends with anyone and his loyalty is unending. He shows up to Valinor a century late with Starbucks in hand and his dwarf bestie at his side. Iconic.

hi mr neilman ! i don't know how to phrase it in a normal way, but one time i saw you say "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" and it changed my life, no exaggeration. i struggle with mental illness and sometimes this phrase is the only thing that keeps me going, even to this day. so i want to say thanks. i owe a lot to you

You are welcome. It was something I realized thinking about a family member who had killed himself when I was young, delivering a blow to his immediate family it never really recovered from. And thinking that whatever seemed inescapable back then would long since have worked itself out. Which doesn't mean that there wouldn't have been new problems. But meant that those problems of then would have passed.

My one problem with Star Trek is that no one is ever consuming contemporary media. As in media that's contemporary for their time period. Everyone is always reading old novels and practicing classical music. They study Klingon Opera or read old Cardassian mysteries. No one is ever like really into obscure Klingon Nightcore. Nobody is reading shitty Ferengi pulp novels. There's no kids media of any kind. Where is space Sesame Street or junior novels about gaining superpowers from a warp core accident? What about comic books? Nobody is playing crappy indy holodeck games. It's always some recreation of a historical battle or just lounging in a mud pit at some alien spa. Someone give me angsty Bajoran protest music. I need some rebellious teens producing the worst most cacophonous death metal techno that they recorded in an empty cargo bay. I need contemporary pop culture in Star Trek.

I think we should dismantle the cis-het-allo-normative Categories and especially the "hierarchies" of relationships that are fucking everywhere. I hate them. Fuck defining the relationship. Fuck prioritizing romance over friendship. Fuck the lines between platonic and romantic and sexual and sensual. Kiss your friends. Fuck your friends. Date your friends. Date your partner. Date multiple people. Date nobody. Kiss and fuck nobody or somebody or lots of somebodies. Why do we have to box everything in. Just do what feels good with the people ot feels good to do it with just love people (or dont).

Disclaimer that yes, obviously having defined relationships that fall strictly in one category or another is important to some people, and that's cool for them. Let them do that. The whole point here is that there should be less pressure and more options. Those include the option to have strictly platonic/romantic/sexual relationships. The point is that there is a choice.

i fuckin love worf's bob

what more has to be said

this glorious mop of hair

this perfectly manicured, lord farquaad-ass, mushroom cap of a bob.

He even looks like a shih tzu.

I absolutely love it.

I love watching Star Trek plots and imagining how other star trek crews would deal with this week's negative space wedgie.

Like I watched the TNG episode where Beverly Crusher keeps witnessing the crew vanishing from existence and people's memory, until it's just her and Picard, and Picard insists that the enterprises has always only been crewed by himself and his doctor.

And I can't help but think Quark would have a simply awful time if his customers and the DP9 crew kept vanishing from history until it's just him and Odo. I need to see Odo tell Quark with an utterly straight face that Odo works a full time job to police Quark and only Quark alone on an entire space station - and Quark being unable to refute that as something Odo would plausably do.
