Tories letting our armed forces down on pay - Emily Thornberry

The annual report of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body’s, published today, says that “almost every group” they spoke to within the armed forces considered the 1 per cent pay increase to be “unreasonable” and “unfair”, in light of the rising cost of living.

Emily Thornberry MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, has criticised the government’s pay policy for Britain’s armed forces.

The annual report of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body’s, published today, says that “almost every group” they spoke to within the armed forces considered the 1 per cent pay increase to be “unreasonable” and “unfair”, in light of the rising cost of living.

In response, Ms Thornberry said:

“As this report confirms, our armed forces are finding their pay falling ever further behind the cost of living, and it is no surprise that morale within our armed forces is being so badly damaged as a result.

“At a time when the MoD is paying one of its own top civil servants more than half a million pounds a year, today’s report is yet another reminder that this government has its priorities on defence deeply skewed.”
